Gnolls don't normally get common for free. Will this change also be made so that Gnoll characters get that language for free?

I think it'd be quite interesting if they didn't get it for free. Why should they?

I'd have to agree. Why should they get it for free? If they want it, they should pick up a onus intelligence point or burn two skill points on it like everyone else.

That's an interesting thought. I may have to have my Blackwheel Company artificer burn some skill points to pick up gnoll since it sounds like there will be adecent number of them.

As someone who has spent some tim ein the prelim group, I would recommend a variety of languages. There is a lot of good role play possibilities there, and hey, it is just cool to know lots of languages (I know 5 in real life, if I might toot my own horn, so maybe I am biased...). The faction master likes role play and diplomacy stuff on some occassions, and it is hard to be diplomatic if you can't even talk to the people that you need to. I know because my character only spoke one language, and well his +14 diplomacy wasn't as effective as it could have been had he been able to communicate with more other groups of people. So, in conclusion: hooray for languages! They are definitely worth it!

Also, is Gnoll the language that Gnolls speak? I don't have the source material in front of me, but I thought that they might speak something like undercommon. Any illumination on this would be appreciated.

Yes, gnolls speak just "gnoll". Hopefully gnoll pc's will have a high intelligence, or at least spend the points to learn common..... :-)

As someone who has spent some time in the prelim group,
Nice avatar pic there Mr. Non-Xot.

Languages are good. Languages make communication possible. Many times we've been frustrated by not having the right languages.

I actually am interested in seeing where this falls.

Or they can go around saying "Woof Woof, Bark Bark, Wolf Bark" in my own words to my old homegroup when after 10 minutes of trying to find a way to talk to the Gnolls, they realized they had nothing (not for lack of trying though. That was they day they found out the limitations of Comprehend Languages).

I too pondered taking the Gnoll language for my dwarven cleric character. Only problem is that its not one of the available bonus languages for my class or race. I know bards have "Speak Language" as a class skill (maybe a few other classes also). Everyone else must spend 2 points for it as a cross-class. Only thing is that as a first level character I don't know if we are able to learn to speak any language, even through spending xtra skill points on it.. if it isn't on our "bonus language" lists. So, Gnoll isn't on my Dwarven or cleric bonus languages list... so I'm assuming I can't learn it.. at least not at first level. Is this wrong? I havn't seen anything that says this is correct, but it's kinda odd to allow anybody to spend 2 points to learn a language that isn't one of the normal languages the character would encounter.

The bonus languages listed for your race and class are the languages you are allowed to choose from due to having a high Intelligence bonus. if you take ranks in Speak Language, you are allowed to learn any language you desire.
