Does being in a Dragonmarked House use an unlock slot? The Blackwheel Company description in the campaign standards just says you can choose at first level, but doesn't say it costs an unlock

No, being in a Dragonmarked house, or taking any of the specific feats listed as being unlocked by Blackwheel company, do not require the use of an expansion slot.

As I read it being in Blackwheel, unlocks bolonging to a dragonmarked house, and that (in blackwheel) unlocks the dragonmarks, right?
So, you can't make a marked PC that doesn't belong to a house, right?

Technically, you could play an Aberrant Marked character. But uh... that would be bad given the Blackwheel Company's affiliation with the Dragonmarked Houses. Otherwise, any marked character must be a member of a house (unless we're assuming they're a foundling, in which case they'd be immediately indoctrinated to a house... or killed if they refused...). But you're also correct in assuming that House membership and Dragonmarks do not require any special unlock in the Company.

Just as a complement, nothing forbids a player to have a dragonmarked character that doesn't have a perfect relationship with his family. A possible background for engaging in the Blackwheel Company can be a fight with your Clan or House and the will to be someone, not inside the House habitat, neither completely outside the world of the Twelve.

That's correct, although access to the Least Dragonmark, Lesser Dragonmark, Greater Dragonmark, and Favored in House feats certainly suggest a good opening for house scions and house agents in the BWC.

My character is a house agent, a Tharashk privateer. As soon as he gains more levels, he'll become a dragonmarked heir of Tharashk (currently half-orc fighter 4; will be a fighter 4 / dragonmarked heir 3 for the next level bump).

Note that outside of Blackwheel, you can make a Dragonmarked PC using one of the Dragonmark creation cards. Otherwise there is no way to do it.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking of making an elf with the mark of shadows from Aerenal, that wasn't tied to the house. As it said in the CS, the Phiarlan line is still scaterred in Aerenal.

The Mark of Shadow can still manifest in Aereni elves, but most such characters tend to hide their dragonmarks or leave to Khorvaire, given the anti-dragonmark stigma that the Aereni have, ever since the erradication of the Mark of Death.

Anything against a Valenar Elf being a marked member of house Thuranni?
