Hi I was planning on taking the "Commerce" Domain that is available to clerics who worship Kol Korran. The Granted Power gives me a +10 on my Profession checks to "earn a living." How does this work in the campaign, since we only use the Profession skill to earn a living during our character's downtime? In the Ebberon setting they arrive at a formula that says 10x character ranks in bonus gold to your characters Equipment Value or EV.

Using this formula a normal character with 4 ranks in Profession would earn 40gp during the character's downtime. But if that character is a cleric with the Commerce domain I should get to add 10 to this total to get 14 ..and thus generate 140gp during character down-time.

Is this correct? .. Otherwise I think that the Domain's Granted power would be rendered useless. :(

I think the key words here are "ranks in Profession". This would imply that only the ranks taken would generate bonus gold. The +10 bonus is not ranks, so would not apply. Yes, this makes it less worthwhile, but not totally useless. I've seen many mods where having the right Profession to make a check would garner some very useful information, and that +10 would definitely help on those.

I agree totaly, however the domain says: "You Gain a +10 competence bonus on Profession checks made to earn a living (not checks to accomplish specialized tasks)."

So this would render the ability useless in game, since in-game I can't use my skill to earn money, its done using the "downtime" formula...RIGHT? That formula does specifically say "ranks" in profession or craft.. so you see my problem.

I was hoping to get some sort of "adaptation" of this granted power to fit with the down-time profession/craft formula.

Yeah, you're right that this domain power seems to be rendered useless in the structure of the D&D Campaigns (other than adding Appraise to your class skill list). But it seems like it would have an easy fix, by adding to the standards something like "The commerce domain adds 100 GP to the characters EV." It kinda matches up with how they give gold for ranks in profession, and it is nothing gamebreaking. But for right now, as the CS read, you wouldn't get any benefit from that domain power.

Well, we'll just have to see what we can do about this. No promises, since I don't hold the rules purse strings.

Even if I can't get it in--maybe I'll find a way to work a little magic for letting the Commerce domain have a little fun in the BWC. It fits the theme extremely well. I'd be surprised if some adventure didn't show up with a perk for it. ;)

I'm looking forward to playing my money-grubbing dwarven cleric. I'm sure he would protest the loss of ANY additional money. For my part, I'll wait and see if there is any modification to the rules.

I choose flavor over power, given the choice I'd choose flavor with power.
