Mine will be Captain Zek d'Lyrandar - Swashbuckler

Who'll be helping him take advantage of Xen'drik?

Mackinnon "Mace" Maceck-- Dwarven Legendary Leader: Field Marshal of the Company.

"Mace" is the first in command of the BWC, and will be mentoring our eager recruits through some of Xen'drik's darkest hours.

While his job is mostly patriarchal, you'll be introduced to a cast of characters that have much more specific roles.

For example, Mach Ogdin--a House Deneith man and fighter (and drinker) of repute, will be teaching the recruits "Jump Training." I'll leave that one to your imagination. :D

Unsure. Probably another Warforged. It's working well at present ... and really who makes a better hero?

Well I was partial to drunk guys jumping from high places, but it seems that polite (and friendly to all) gentleman may be spoken for.
So perhaps with a friend playing a pair of shifter barbarians named "Me" and "Him"
Yea, they are that dumb, whichever is talking is always "Me" and the other is simply "him"
Or who knows. Part of the issues with ADD, you tend to want to play like 10 different people. Maybe that's another condition but we'll leave the diagnosing to Kiddoc up there. :D

I'm currently leaning towards a scout, I'd like a dragon mark, but I'll have to read up to see if there is a particular house that would work well with the Scout class. If not, maybe I'll go warforged Scout.

I may end up eating the BWC faction mods for my local group but if I do get a chance to play it would probably be a Drow Marshal.

The marshal class looks to be really neat game mechanics wise but I've yet to see them in action - that said I have seen a Dragon Shaman (which appear to share some of the aura mechanics) in action and the Vigor aura is awesome.

I've only made a minor change to this PC the name

Captain Keif d'Lyrandar - Half-Elf Swashbuckler, Dragonmarked Scion of House Lyrandar

Oooh. Half-elf Lyrandar Swashbuckler--sounds like we've got a ship's captain on our hands. Keep your eye out for Captain Findecano Talarom. Rumor has it that he's marked, but none have lived to tell. Still, he's the best pilot this side of Stormreach--and that ain't nothin'.

Thanks for the great starter thread Frobi-wan.

I don't think I have the willpower to pass up the gnoll in this faction. However, I believe I'll try a Gnoll artificer who is tired of working for "the man" or "the elf" or "the dwarf" or ....

I'm still looking over the new Xen'drick rules, but I'm very much looking forward to playing this new campaign at Origins. There are just so many good choices for a character, that I don't know what to play! I was thinking of a human warmage, possibly with the Favored in House feat. Does anyone know if we can use this feat to aquire items prior to a module? As for the marshal, my wife had a very effective fighter/marshall in LGR - marshalls are great, as long as you have the 4 base classes to go with them!

I'm planning on running the Blackwheel Company as a DM, but here are a couple of character ideas I was leaning towards:

A warforged mercenary (probably fighter/barbarian/juggernaut)
A dragonmarked inquisitive (probably Tharashk, Medani, Deneith, or Phiarlan)
A Cannith wand specialist (which should offset the drawback on maximum CL for Artificer for item creation)

Playing in the BWC right now has shown me that there is really room for a complex character in the campaign. There is much more here than just roguery and smashing. I had been running with an exalted human monk (Xot Stenex - RIP), who made gameplay somewhat more complicated because of the Vow of Poverty. At the same time this complication seemed to help provide more depth to the campaign. There was a lot of personal struggle built into this character's interaction with the BWC, which actually ended up helping us significantly at points.

I have really enjoyed the expansive possibilities available to someone taking part in the BWC. I would just encourage everyone to look for a challenging character that will also be fun to play.

I would tell what my new character is going to be, but I don't want to spoil the surprise before she is unveiled in a week and a half... Maybe I'll post that info then.

Word.

Well said. And I might add, also true. :D

If anyone proved that diversity adds value to the campaign, you did so by running a VoP Exalted Monk among a group of adventurers each with their own hugely divergent intentions. He made the Company better by his presence, and he will be missed.

Of course, now the BWC has its first Martyred Hero(TM). How will they respond? ;)

Well I think that Skree will make a second appearance. He did such a good job at not doing much in Winterfantasy that I can't wait to play him a again.

Losing sight with glitterdust and having a ton of combat spells in a non combat situation... very interesting. He did come up with a few neat ideas though.

Skree the mighty kobald socerer. Now wait a minute... I left my cave in the ground and now you want me to jump???

Regarding the Marshal class, I've been pretty happy with it. Half-elf Marshal with a sprinkle or two of Dragonmark Heir gives some nuts abilities/feats/auras etc. He's definitely not a smasher, but if you can work the charisma angle you can get a lot of things done.

A gnoll Knight might be interesting... but, I might have to stick with Fighter. Hmm.
So, the gnolls of Droaam have been providing mercenaries to various groups for quite a long time... now that the Daughters of Sora Kell have brought a semblance of order to the erstwile dominion, there will be a strong market for officers, cavalry, and/or dragoons (soldiers that ride into battle but fight on foot). With the advent of magebred horses that might be willing to bear a gnoll or something of that sort... the gnoll/flind lords of Droaam can begin to develop Marshals and Knights.

I have to admit that I'm not being very creative, though... the Knight's abilities synergize well with the spiked chain. So, yes... another spiked chain fighter. *sigh*. On the up side, this character might not need to use the Knight's class features to have foes prefer to attack him or her... being a gnoll is probably offensive enough! :)

Now, I wonder if DMs will complain if I try to unlock the PHBII with the gnoll level, then pick Knight for this character's class level. Hmm.

Now that's a sweet idea. A gnoll knight. I bet an obviously superior creature like a Gnoll could think of tons of great one-liners to go with all those Knight (taunts) Challenges too. That's a sweet race/class combo for the flavor. If you don't use it, I might just snag it for an NPC. ;)

How was a Vow of Poverty allowed? The Book of Exalted Deeds isn't a legal XenEx Campaign secondary source so even if you used your first level expansion slot to unlock that ability it wasn't a legal character.

DM's perogative. :D

Frobi, he's one of my playtesters--we expanded the use of a lot of items/classes/races in the playtest campaign to "stretch the limits" of modules to make sure they were uh... "robust." ;)

I've got a nice group of them 'round here, so my guess is that they'll contribute every now and again.

I also expect/hope to see some comments from folks using or modules in their "home" games with a few "Rule 0" or "House Rule" things thrown in. I'd be curious to know the experiences of others with the modules/campaign outside of the RPGA format. :)

Considering one of my favorite character ideas in one of my home games, and my username, I'll be pushing Aram d'Deneith - Marshal (eventually Marshal/Dragonmark Heir). Still not sure if I want to try the Adrenaline Surge or if I'll stick with the Grant Move Action ability, tho...

Still not sure if I want to try the Adrenaline Surge or if I'll stick with the Grant Move Action ability, tho...
Depending on your group, I would lean towards the Surge.
Like the postings in the other topic about those two, the issue with the move action is coordination. Our "testing" group is so screwy and disfunctional, (some of us never played before, some played very little, and others are diehard D&D types) so anything that requires cooperation and solid planning tends to be, ermm, not good :D

I haven't been to an RPGA event, but I would guess that the grouping is sometimes unknown, so you can't count on great "synergy" (I can't believe I intentionally used that word) between players.

Basicaly in summary, Surge always works, even if you have idiots at your table. Move action requires some brains by the other players. (and all of you being on the same page, think if half the guys charge, and half retreat, OOPS)

You definitely have a point there. I'll have to think about it, tho - it might just work, because the party that I play with at home games has a tendency to want to run, even if the bark is worse than the bite - but I could only use it to retreat. You know the intro mini-adventure in the back of the ECS? They wanted to run from the first encounter. Granted they were new to Eberron, and D&D, and there were only three players that night; I don't know, maybe they thought it was an Iron Golem...

Good to see other groups behave differently :D
My group, at level 3, saw a dragon.
One guy tried talking, the rest of us tried shooting it/stabing it.
We ran into a warforged titan in the Mournland, we attack, do we fall back? Nope, my character decided it was "smart" to go toe to toe with a 20' hunk of adamantine. :D (It didn't fare to well, but that's what an int of 8 gets you) After that we run into a Huge Earth Elemental. Do we run, go around, avoid it? Nope, run up and poke it with a sword. Our DM has a habit of specifying before combat, "remember not all combats can be won, sometimes you should run/retreat/avoid combat" Promptly my character yells insults about their momma being a snowblower, and pokes them with swords. Somehow or another we've only lost like 30 cohorts, and 1.5 PC's

The move action could be AWESOME in a group that knows how each other is going to act, and has plans. We just tend to kind of be a big group of individuals hitting/fireballing/whatevering things. (Except our marshall, he just stands there and shoots himself in the foot with his bow :P )

Cheers

That's a good point amigo. Grant Move Action is really only about as good as your plan going into a fight. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's horrible.

The marshal is a great class though--but not easy on the learning curve for new players. Still, it's one of my personal favorites--and in Eberron it just drips BWC flavor.

The flavor is precisely what I was going for. I intend to play/run adventures from each faction, but it appears thus far that my favorite will be BWC.

I've been playing my whole life, but only frequently since the release of 3.0. Most of my effort goes into trying to recruit enough players to run a decent game - and then teaching them the entire system from ground up.

My question is - since we're all on the subject of characters - what are the thoughts on the balance of this PC party:

- Karrnathi Human Marshal - Scion of House Deneith
- Talenta Halfling Scout - Scion of House Jorasco
- Valenar Elf Druid of the Siyal Marrain
- Brelish Human Sorcerer - Scion of House Orien

This is what my friends and I were considering for our first excursion. Thoughts?

Don't want to give too many hints away here--but that's not a bad party to have in the first faction adventure--Principal of the Matter.

You'll find that the Scout/Marshal/Druid combo is excellent--in fact, you can do some incredible tricks with the three of them. Keep in mind though, there's no substitute for a straight fighter for soaking up damage or a cleric for healing it. Druids are servicable healers, and scouts can do some skill monkeying, but they're not going to disarm any traps.

My best advice is to go with what feels right to you. We are always advised to write with the standard party of four (fighter, rogue, cleric, mage) in mind--but you'll find throughout my adventures I do so less than others. I like to encourage creative race/class combos through fun module tweaks.

Since Dragonmarks are in the campaign for this faction, I'm really got my eye on a human scout from House Orien with the Lesser Mark. They get some fun travel powers, and the "black ops" arm of the Dragonmarked Houses will definitely need some wilderness experts in the deep jungles of Xen'drik.

I kinda wimped out:

I re-used the 1st level build of my MoH character: a Hobgoblin Bard.

Granted, I have 0 AP's because aside from the 'City Goblin' card, I
also have "At Home Among The Towers", which gives me 0 AP's
to start with, but given that I've not played much Eberron, I
usually forget I have the damn things, and have only used them
a handful of times in the small number of MoH adventures I've
done, so its a sacrifice I'm comfortable making for a character
concept I really like (a city-bred Hobgoblin who is a little too
'in touch' with his ethnic heritage, basically a Hobgoblin chav),
and since I haven't been able to play his MoH version more than
a handful of times. It sure saved up time (since I am rather
retentive and still had the original 1st level sheet saved).

Granted, Mogaan is not a combat oriented character (his MoH
version is ending up a Master Inquisitive/Virtuoso, and I may take
this version that way as well), but he is definitely a fountain of
knowledge, and I figure his XE version will end up being sort of
a Daniel Jackson-type; a city boy who ends up in the wilderness
surrounded by all sorts of weirdness.

Looking foward to this. Darguun bagpipes, baby.

Mmm. City goblins. Goblinoids are welcomed heartily in the BWC. All The Company sees is a future, not a past.

Just be careful--if you run into the Vash Razok, stay sharp, he'll try to sweet talk you into joining his platoon and becoming one of "the horde."

Trust me, the BWC ends up being sort of a Haven for folks with all sorts of colorful pasts. Some seek to escape boredom in pursuit of glory and adventure--other seek to escape things much darker.

Elf with the Mark of Shadow:
Scout 4 / Bard 1 / Dragonmark Heir 4 / Shadowdancer X
The bard level could go dragonmark heir or fighter, as well.
I was hoping to do Scout 4 / Dragonmark Heir 3 / Shadowdancer X, but i end up a feat short. Also, my build doesn't seem the most combat savvy. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I don't believe you're going to be able to dip into a single level of bard. According to the current XE rules, you must take 3 levels of any non-favored class before taking levels in an additional class or prestige class.

A gnome could work with such a build, but that rules out Mark of Shadows. I'd suggest making that bard level a Dragonmark Heir level.

No, i'd make the Bard my "secondary favored class" in this case, allowing a 1 level dip. My build (by level) would go Scout, Scout, Bard, Scout, DMH, DMH, DMH, DMH, Scout, and then Shadowdancer all the way down.

Well I know that I'm pumped for some Company action. I've been toying with different builds myself but they all hover around an heir of Lyrandar. Maybe bard or some such. The big thing is I'm planning to take the Windwright Captain PrC from Explorers Handbook. You suckers can take whatever dragonmarks you want, I'll just bow out with my own PERSONAL (and yes it does say this) airship. Every squad needs its dropship, how about one that is telepathically commanded and faster than the norm. Oh its so much sweetness. I just gotta hope I won't get gimped on taking it. We'll see what the MAN lets me get away with.

Death from above!

No, i'd make the Bard my "secondary favored class" in this case, allowing a 1 level dip. My build (by level) would go Scout, Scout, Bard, Scout, DMH, DMH, DMH, DMH, Scout, and then Shadowdancer all the way down.
I think his point was that your first favored would be Wizard (since that's the racial favored) so you'd have to go 3+ Scout consecutively ...

Hello Mercs, I'm posting my character for a pre-GenCon review.

Wedge is a Warforged Scout in the service of House Cannith. At the commencement of the campaign, Wedge "lives" in the mills of House Cannith's Sharn Tower complex. Technically speaking, he is an apprentice of the Fabricator's Guild. He is loyal to House Cannith by a sense of prodigal obligaiton. Wedge feels that if House Cannith approves of his expedition to Xend'drik, he could use this opportunity to glean a few arcane secrets and shiny objects for himself. His outward loyalty is to "The Contract". He will seek to satisfy the objective of the contract wether it be benevolent or malevolent. Monetary gain is more important to Wedge than satisfying an ethical or philosophical goal. He feels that money and the aquisition of knowledge will buy off his prodigal obligation as well as earn his Journeyman's Letters from House Cannith.

I actually LOVE the warforged scout in XE campaigns. I've had a chance to playtest with it several times now, and I'm always pleased at how well they do despite some drawbacks. I think the thing that I love most is that it's a Min/Max'ers nightmare, which means the folks playing them tend to be great strategists, team players, and roleplayers--rather than just folks looking to smash something to bits in combat. It's a fun race, and with that artificer substitution level combo the other warforged at the table are going to love you.

If you want a recommendation though, heroic spirit is GREAT for artificers--you need those extra action points to hasten infusions--and they refresh every adventure, which means that feat gets even better. Don't get me wrong, combat casting is great, but if it takes you 3 rounds to cast something, even combat casting can't help ya. :D

Good luck, and maybe we'll see each other at the same table!

Don't get me wrong, combat casting is great, but if it takes you 3 rounds to cast something, even combat casting can't help ya.

I don't know of any infusions that take 3 rounds but the standard weapon and armor infusions take a minute which is 10 rounds. And remember that the action point to quicken an infusion makes the casting time 1 round not one standard action.

Also, you'll need 10 gp worth of ointment (which equals 50 gp in this campaign) for the material component if you want to infuse any armor.

I enjoy the artificer class a lot but I don't think I'll play one if the silly XenEx campaign rule stating that artificer's can't craft an item if the caster level is higher than their ranks in UMD divided by 2 stays in effect (see page 6 under the ICF section of the XenEx CS v. 1.0 for details). Having to wait until 13th level to be able to make a Cloak of Charisma +2 is overkill.

I did pick combat casting thinking that I will be dodging quite a few blows while preparing infussions. I didn't take look at heroic spirit.

That's a moot point for GenCon, because I'll be playing my Cabal Cleric instead

I activated my character at GenCon for Well of Woe-- my original plan was to play Crimson Codex and Cabal of Shadows. But our D&D Open semifinals nixed my Cabal slot, and my Crimson Codex slot went horribly, horribly wrong, so I went along with my roomates enthusiastic recommendations and made up a Blackwheel dude right in the hotel the night before we played the slot. (hah!) I was quite happy with the way it worked out and I think I'm going to be full time Blackwheel from here on out.

So here he is:
Allardius Hook, half orc necromancer (wizard), an experienced sailor and a gentleman.

Although slightly sinister and not quite as smart as he thinks he is, Allardius hopes to have his own ship eventually.

It is Wulfried "Wulf" Jorgeson d'Orien, a viking skald (bard/marshal) from the Lhazaar Principalities who was sent to Xen'drik due to indiscretions in the use of his dragonmark while in Sharn. It's clear that some of the new blood in the Blackwheel Company needs strong leadership. Fortunately, House Deneith has dispatched Alix d'Deneith to join the BC. Some may think he worships the Dragon Above, but in fact he refers to the Dragon Within, believing all sentients have a spark of divine in them.

Alix expects to serve as a field officer (danger, sharp learning curve ahead?), supporting his team with his Dragonmark of Shield Other and divine spells. With his natural charisma and leadership ability, he is sure to rise quickly through the ranks.

Actually, this brings up a good question. Can members of dragonmarked houses claim a noble title with an expansion slot?

According to the ECS and Players Guide to Eberron, if a member of a dragonmarked house marries a noble, either one or the other of them must forever forsake all claim to thier position.

AbyssKnight,
That is a good question! I forgot about that...I was just trying to reinforce the Dragonmarked House background. I'd happily change that expansion slot to Augment Healing so Alix can actually be useful!

Maybe Alix's father did forsake his Deneith lineage, but then when Alix manifested a Dragonmark, the House claimed him back? I suppose he'd have to relinquish his noble title then...a sticky question for our erstwhile Faction Masters.

My character and I made our RPGA debuts together at GenCon Indy. She's Corria Calazair, Valenar Ranger. Her first name means "legendary hunter" in Elven. LOL -- maybe that's why we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with her scimitar, but we crushed folks' hopes, dreams and aspirations with that bow!

BtW, major thanks to Lt. Col. Pilgrim for that highly insightful set of guidelines. I considered them very carefully (just following orders), and I gotta say: the Blind-Fight feat, the emphasis on awareness skills, the silvered and cold iron arrows I packed, and several killer dice rolls made me look awfully cool. Caught the DM completely by surprise, too -- and everyone knows what a joy that always is! :evillaugh

My initial intent was to progress Corria through some nifty mix of Dervish/Tempest/Revenant Blade, though given her apparent affinity for bows, maybe I ought to reconsider that....

To our Glorious Factionmasters: to the best of your knowledge, is there any intent to include The Book of Nine Swords in the list of things we can expand to, either as bennies on campaign cards or something else? 'Cause maybe it's just me, but that Warblade class just SCREAMS "Valenar Elf"!

I'm thinking a House Phiarlan scout, moving eventually toward Dread Commando. I like the idea of mixing the shadow mark with the flavor of the commando.
My current thought is to take fighter as my second favored class, then do four levels of scout, which gets me to fast movement and a bonus feat. At that point I should have Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot and Dodge. Then I'll take two levels of fighter, taking Mobility and another ranged combat feat (coordinated shot?), and getting me to the requisite +5 BAB to take Dread Commando as my seventh level.
Any thoughts on this plan? Does it seem to fit the Company as well as I think it does?

I'll be using the Adventuring Prodigy card to get the 28 point buy and was thinking of a rogue (e.g. for the skill points). Is that the best class to try to become a pilot or would bard, swashbucker, expert, ranger, wizard, or something else be better? Klawgrinn Yakl is a 7'4 gnoll with red-brown fur and intelligent shiny black eyes, typically clad in unmarked hides with black leather trim. Klawgrinn learned the ways of Druidism from his Droaamite tribal elder, a wily old gnoll named Jarouk'na. He performed admirably in his tribal rites of passage and at age 19 left Droaam on a year-long journey to the provice of Q'barra, where he did odd jobs until enlisting as a recruit with the Blackwheel company and departing for Xen'drik.

Klawgrinn is a grouchy and irascible fellow, but he is not rash or hasty in action - although he is sometimes overconfident and brash in speech, and that can get him in trouble. He is less inclined to think that he's a superior being to all those around him (as some gnolls are accused of), since his connection to druidism has brought him some much needed perspective to counter the typical Droaamite propaganda. He can be a good leader or a solid contributor if someone more qualified steps up... when the Company's interests are at stake, completing the mission is of paramount importance, not personal accolades. Klawgrinn trusts the Company to recognize and reward talent in good time.

He is rarely without his current animal companion, a scarred and smelly dire rat named Gristlegnaw who accompanied him all the way from Droaam. The rat, Klawgrinn claims, is "stupid lucky, but mostly plain stupid." Nonetheless, Gristlegnaw has survived four jaunts into the Xen'drik wilderness thus far.

Klawgrinn is a Dragoon of Blackwheel and holds the Pilgrim's Crest Medal. He fights with a cold iron scimitar as his weapon of choice, but is also an accomplished slinger and has been known pull out his oaken club to lay a serious Shillelagh beatdown on foes when the time is right. His favorite food is spit-roasted chicken hot off the coals.

Good concept Marcia. I have just played Blackwheel #1 group with a bard that was heading down that path. I also DM for a local group that includes a bard working towards Airship Captain (from Explorer's Handbook).

My player's bard has taken some ranks in Knowledge: Planes to account for the elemental familiarity. He's 4th level and has spent time aboard Lyrander elemental vessels while playing the first two WotC Eberron mods. This fills the "special condition" prerequisite as stated in EH. By the end of the third mod, he and the rest of the party will have an opportunity to aquire a Lyrander elemental ship.

Hopefully you will be able to slot that prestige class with one of the upcoming XenEx RPGA cards. Otherwise, I'm not sure if the faction masters and content developers will allow it to be unlocked.

Good Luck regardless!

Rogue is good--I've also seen Marshals work very well. They're a great support class for any party, and the "marshal" class itself seems to fit well with the Pilot/Captain kind of theme.

There are some legendary Blackwheel Company captains out there, and they tend to have a more... shall we say brash and up-front style of command. They prefer to lead from the front and be highly visible, barking orders to their crew, and motivating their men by example.

Captain Findecano Taralom, a half-elf marshal, and former sea captain from the Lhazaar Principalities is currently the most well-recognized of the BWC captains. And, as the chief pilot of the Glory Road, he commands the respect of the other airship captains as well. The House Thuranni Dragonmarked Heir has a certain swagger to him, and has survived a number of adventures so unbelievable that many of the young recruits purposefully seek him out to hear the tales. One in particular about surving torture is a crew favorite, but plays a close second to the time he single handedly "saved" an entire BWC platoon from a...shall we say... rapacious... storm giantess.

Speaking of my character, I finally decided on one and ran it through the first mod. Introducing...

Turguun the Hobgoblin Scout! :fight!:

Man, I love this character. I didn't know about scout skirmishing beforehand, but once I glanced over the class I was curious. Then I played it, and it was like ...bingo! I finally found a character type that rocks hard.

The Hobgoblin stat bonuses (+2 DEX, +2 CON, +4 Move Silently), coupled with the Dhaakani scout lore made this character a perfect archetype. IMO this one had to be played, from both roleplaying and game mechanic interests.

I can totally visualize this character among a motley band of mercenaries. Wears animal hides and other fun stuff. Good with a shortbow, hand axe, and woodshod morning star. He's not the heavy main battle tank, but he strikes out of nowhere...slicing hamstrings and raising Hyperborean hell! RAWR!!

There are some legendary Blackwheel Company captains out there, and they tend to have a more... shall we say brash and up-front style of command. They prefer to lead from the front and be highly visible, barking orders to their crew, and motivating their men by example.

Do these captains have anything to do with those secret Blackwheel Company dropships? Hmmm, let's see. Lead from the front, highly visible? It all makes sense now. He's the guy that shoves a Featherfall potion at you with one hand, and pushes you off the forecastle with the other...

Shhh... Magic Assisted Airship Drops are a highly guarded secret within The Company.

Now, if I were to comment on their existence, which I won't, since MAAD's don't actually happen, ever, I would say this:

It's the Captain who pilots that ship to the exact drop point--speed, altitude, pitch, yaw, and timing all must be perfect if you're to send a platoon screaming in for a precision strike on something say... the size of a tower roof, or a sea-going vessel. Make friends with the Captain.

Watch out for General Ogdin, however, who is likely to be the cruel taskmaster that jams the featherfall token into your belt before planting his boot firmly in your backside. He's been known to use the "evolutionary" tactic of training with recruits before. You know, the kind where the weak are naturally de-selected.

Here's what I have so far.

Braden d'Orien - Rogue/Fighter/Extreme Explorer

Concentrating on dragonmark and AP-enhancing feats...Here's a bit of his background.

“I can get anything from here to there; it all depends on how badly you want it...there.” – Anonymous House Orein courier

Couriers! Who needs them? Apparently everybody of high rank does. I’m not a talker. Never have been, never will be…I’m a doer. I do things. Things that some people might think are below their station in life, but still want done...by somebody.

My family is part of House Orien, we’ve been in the business of moving things for as long as we’ve breathed. We live to make things move. To make things happen…to do. My ancestor, Opelis d’Orien, came up with the idea of the lightning rail, and don’t let anybody tell you differently, back before the Last War started. And it’s been moving people and goods for as long as anyone can remember.

I challenge anyone to provide a better, safer way to travel. Some might say that the airboats can get you somewhere faster, but the lightning rail won’t come crashing down to the ground cause a sorcerer sneezed. Ocean travel? Sure, if you like sea devils and seasickness. Now, I’m not saying I wouldn’t ever step foot on one of these machines, I’m just saying that I prefer the ground under my feet or at least real close to my feet.

I’m talking too much as it is. My father says I have to write this stuff down now, cause of what happened yesterday. He says I’m going to be important in the family someday because of it and I need to keep a record for posterity or something. I’m not buying it. I’m still the same person I was before this mark appeared on my chest. He always said I’d be lucky if I made Courier status before, but now…he and mother are putting on airs like they’re something special. They’re the same petty, power-hungry folk they’ve always been.

I’ve gotta get out of here. I’ve gotta “do” something. Just clear my head for a couple days. Gotta move…

- Journal of Braden d’Orien

That day Braden fled from his home before his destiny could come crashing down around him. He made his way to Sharn and joined the army. His destiny’s been chasing him ever since…

Braden will be at GenCon SoCal this year, so maybe you'll meet him in one of the games. :)

Thanks,
Kordak

I've decided to go with a Kalashtar Psion. Although he would fit much better in the Covenant of Light, my group decided as a whole to go BWC.

Thenmihatash Novakashtai. Male Kalashtar Psion. Lawful Neutral.
Str: 10, Dex: 10, Con: 14, Int: 16, Wis: 13, Cha: 8.

Basically he was once a young idealist who resided in Cyre. He managed to survive the Day of Mourning, but the terrible forces not only altered him physically (in my mind, it dropped his cha and rose his con), but stripped away the dream of one day uniting Khovaire against the Inspired of Reidra. He then moved to the Lhazaar Principalities, happy to ignore the world and be ignored by it. In his research, he came across cryptic, incomplete passages that mention ancient artifacts capable of expelling the Quori from their hosts. He then joined up with the Blackwheel Company in order to possibly locate these machines.

He's withdrawn, esoteric, and generally creepy looking. He is not given to talk about himself (in fact, all he'll tell you was he was in Cyre when "The Great Calamity" happened and the rest is not your concern). Generally speaking, he doesn't seem intent on getting promoted within the company, as he is not a leader not interested in the added responsibilities said promotions would bring.

Ril'ti, though I wasn't allowed to register the ' . Shifter (rat) rogue, just hiding out and making some money with the BWC. Was kinda hard to put together, with -int and -cha it was hard to be any good at the skills one would normally associate with a were-rat. I like were-touched master, but going for that will make keeping skills up even harder, so might just stick with rogue all the way.

The marshal class looks to be really neat game mechanics wise but I've yet to see them in action - that said I have seen a Dragon Shaman (which appear to share some of the aura mechanics) in action and the Vigor aura is awesome.

Playing one in LGCS, not so great at combat, but then I didn't stat for combat. I would argue that dragon shamans are better in most combat situations (more hp, better auras, dragon breath), gotta keep the group tighter though with the smaller aura. Marshalls, on the other hand, are the pwnage in social skills, particularly with diplomacy...they have all the synergies for it. Combine that with half-elf and the minor charisma aura and you can make a lot of those rushed diplomacy checks with ease.

You will absolutely love the new miniature coming out for a Revenant Blade then too.

In the playtest campaign, a very important PC (NPC to you) wed himself to a Valenar Revenant Blade that had a huge impact on the course of BWC history.

Since it's an NPC to me, I take it that I refer to them as "sir".

But that little factoid sounds like a great story element to play off of. I hope to develop the character vastly through roleplaying, since I haven't had a chance to do that with an RPGA character since my LG dwarf.

And as far as Elven Ranger Sub. levels go, doesn't really play into my build too well. But *shrug* sounds like you ran into that problem too. If I can get the Card from Mark, I think I'll find a way to go into Bladesinger...

Good point -I hadn't looked at the pre-reqs.

There is a Way of the Valenar card (Expansion not Creation, MoH set 2, 10/10) that opens this and Dervish (among other things) but not Revenant Blade. I think you could just use your 1st level Expansion Slot to Unlock it though...

"Windu"
Warforged Scout (Psiforged)
Artificer 5/Fighter 4/Psychic Warrior 2/War Mind 5+

Psiforged Card (unlocks all psionic content)
Warforged Artificer Racial Substitution Levels
Feats (Focused on Lighting Maces)
Items (Artificer Belt that adds 2 arms, various cool light maces)

I might try to add a couple levels of reforged... (replacing warforged feats with aberrant bloodline & unatural reach..) couple that with psionic reduction.. and I now have a diminuative lightning mace wielder that still has 5' reach.

Background
Created recently, Windu was designed to entertain, a job at which he aparently failed. He escaped from his creator before he could be scrapped for a newer model. Now he works for the Blackwheel company.

Nothing says he can't but probably the story prereq must be given as a story item.
That prestige is just so cool and with an artificer to infuse the ship it's even better :D

Get ready for the new CS. This character will most certainly be an option. In fact, one of the Blackwheel Company's premier officers, Admiral Findecano Talarom from the Arrowhawk Armada follows a non-traditional path to occupy such a role.

In fact, future adventures present a number of opportunities to "muck about" on an airship.

I have three (eh, kinda four) ideas for a BWC character. I won't be using them any time soon, but I think about it a lot, so I figured I'd share.

The first, is your average Warforged Artificer. Focused mainly on making himself into a combat machine. He's been around since the very beginning, Warforged #42. Lots of experience, this guy. Sort of the disillusioned, veteran warrior type, made to be a warforged combat medic grudgingly turned into a leader when his leader died and he was the highest ranking left in the group. It'd be the first time I'd ever played a warforged, so I think it'd be fun.

My other warforged idea, would be a Warforged Scout, Scout. A tiny, tiny guy with boomerangs and delicious hit and run tactics. A bit of a self serving survivalist, who will grudgingly pull through for his team (think Riddick, sorta).

I think the idea I like most at this point is a Gnoll artificer. Trying desperately, desperately, to prove that not all gnolls are idiots, just uneducated. He'd have an iron defender homunculus (who he's improved, with Improved Homunculus) who he constantly argues with in a series of barks. He'd be a very partly friendly, well-kept-but-still-vicious type (Chewbacca).

Idea four is a half-elf from House Lyrandar. I have to say, out of all of the houses, I think Lyrandar just steals the title of coolest away from everyone else and then laughs in their face. I'd play an aspiring airship captain (hopefully Swashbuckler/Marshall), though the ability to qualify for the current airship pirate PrCs seems kind of hard, with RPed requirements and all. Still, I think an inspiring leader with a bit of rakish scoundrel in him would be a fun guy to RP.

I think this is likely the hardest faction to pick a cool concept for. There's just so many possibilities that it makes it really, really rough. Even just reading everyone else's character ideas is giving me ideas.
TheOtherChris

I agree with that.
Most of the factions are cool, but the BWC really has such a diverse makeup. Since it's sort of a military org you will have ex military, but it's also slightly "noble" so you'll have the fancy pants from some of the marked houses. (Like that Admiral Findeccano Kiddoc mentioned) You'll also have people from all walks that are recruited based on their skill and expertise.
It really REALLY makes it hard to make a decision on what to play.
Currently I'm playing a human cleric, "Adolfo". I wanted to try and make him more of a "pacifist" and not like fighting, but it always seems to not work out that way. He is DEFINATELY built to heal more than do damage though. Of course he is good friends with a large gnoll barbarian, so he doesn't need to do much damage. :D He doesn't give out his last name, because of his past :)
BWC is a great place to have your past forgotten.

Bastion was also the name of a Warforged NPC in Mark of Heroes.

Also, I'd caution you about the Warforged Juggernaut PrC. While not having to make will saves is cool the Bard's song falls on deaf ears as well. And any Bard worth a darn is giving the party +3 to atks and damage. You might want to look at the Spellcarved Soldier from Races of Eberron.

Spellcarved was actually something that I considered for a time, but didn't really find it to fit the concept that I had come up with. I never really planned on TWFFKAB (The Warforged Formerly Known As Bastion) taking anything more than a couple Artificer levels at most, instead only taking it up so he could be somewhat self-reliant.

Being utilized as a bodyguard during his tenure as a member of the Karnathi military, he is more or less dedicated to sucking up a beating so others don't have to. His ability to repair both himself and the armor and weapons of his charges reinforced that role. Artifice is not so much a way of life or even a hobby. It's just something he managed to pickup along the way to help him better serve his role. He wields a pair of shields (one spiked, one not) as both weapons and armor, which was the main reason for the selection of his name. The main reason that I'm leaning towards Juggernaut is for the bullrush bonus and the charge feats. The immunities and whatnot are side-benefits.

Regardless, thanks for the heads up.

Debated quite abit before looking into the faction to play this character..presenting Finch Farmanning, filled with bravado, swashbuckling dare, a quick wit from his tongue and and equally sharp rapier by his side, and all this....at 3 feet tall :)

Background wise I'm basing this character alittle bit on Capt Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean, some flare, ingenuity with abit of sneaking thrown in for good measure. Thoughts I have for background include being an Emissary/Diplomat from House Sivis.

CN Whisper Gnome Swashbuckler, perhaps mixing in levels of rogue or fighter later. Will use his size as an advantage in melee combat, they'll never know what hit 'em. PrC wise I'm thinking about Blade Bravo and Heir of Syberis as possible options.

Str 10 Dex 16 Con 14 Int 14 Wis 9 Cha 10

Alignment wise maybe leaning towards NG/CG although I'm tempted to play him CN as well.

We are going to start with the Well of Woe campaign - is not advertising your faction to other party members a good thing ?

I've created a dragonmarked half-elf rogue with the intention of being an airship captain, but I can't find any place in the books that tells what you need to be able to captain an airship. Besides being dragonmarked, having a good charisma and diplomacy, and taking leadership at 6th level, what would you need to be an airship captain? Are the extra dragonmarked feats more important than leadership? What about Favored in House?

Anyone know anything about becoming an airship captain?

Thanks,

I get the feeling that Aberrant dragonmarks would not be welcome in the Blackwheel Company, as they are directly opposed by the dragonmarked houses. If you DID have one, you'd have to keep it hidden and secret, so what's the point, anyways?

Pyrite: Firebreathing gnoll (gold dragon shaman)

I'm starting in after the level bump with power attack and exotic weapon proficiency (bastard sword) to go with my 18 str/20 con. After that all my feats will be going into metabreath feats. I'm thinking Quicken + Maximize + Heighten + Clinging = napalm breath of doom. Only one breath per combat if I go that way, but I'll be able to do it as a swift action and then get to work with my sword. The save DC should make high level rogues feint (or at least light on fire and burn nicely for that extra round).

Well, I just made him an wanted some feedback. I don't think I'll be able to play any BWC modules until after the-con-previously-known-as-Winter-Fantasy.

K'Talla
Male Half-Giant
Psychic Warrior.
Str 15 Dex 10 Con 18 Int 10 Wis 12 Cha 08
Alignment: N or LN.
Skill ranks: Autohypnosis 4, Concentration 2, Jump 1, Know Psi 1
Feats: Psionic Weapon, Psionic Body

I've noticed that EL+1 PCs really suffer from the lack of hitpoints compared to their comrades. Psionic Body and a 18 Con should help him stay in the fight longer.

I would like suggestions on weapons and armor. Thanks!

...I could not wait to built my half-giant psychic warrior.

I am new to Eberron / Xendrik - but if other experience is any indicator I think you will find the half-giant psiwarrior somewhere between broken and completely broken. +1 level adjustment is not quite enough for net +2 ability score, use of large weapons (extra damage & reach), uber-grapple and +2 power points. Combine with Expansion or Enlarge Person and its just out of control.

Have fun with it, but be forewarned - the half giant may throw the combat power level of your group out of whack.

Half-giants cannot benefit from an Enlarge Person. The group I game have an occasional Covenant of Light ( ::spit:: ) table that we run, and was going to make a half-giant monk grappler and the +16-20 grapple check at first level relied on that. Oh well.

As a Psychic warrior, you should NEVER care about Enlarge... its all about Expansion (with the 2 size category improvement as soon as your manifestor level gets high enophe).

I love the psychic warrior class. The Half-Giant is full of flavor, but my one of my favorite BWC characters right now is a Daelkyr Half-Blood Psychic Warrior that had to turn to his psychic powers to fight off the demons within his own mind. As he wields symbiont after symbiont to further the BWC's cause, he slips closer and closer to the brink of madness.

Gnoll Dragon Shaman, I love it! I played about with a Lizardfolk Dragon Shaman for a bit, but I really enjoy where the flavor of this goes. I reject all of Droaam and embrace the Draconic Prophecy!

Lt. Col. Mesian D' Orien, Audarian Cavalry Officer Retired
Human Marshal/Fighter
In his early 60's, big, barrel chested, bald and sporting a huge handlebar mustache. Thirty year veteran of the last war. Think Police Sgt Macaffee from Mad Max - "You and me Max, we'll give them back their heroes." Mix that with a little Jarlaxle flamboyance without the agility and maxed ranks in diplomacy. You get the gist of the character. He can sweet talk you into anything, or split your skull.

Conflicted now because I've got a few more levels even after the level bump before Pyrite starts fulling functioning, and I've got a new idea bouncing around my head that will probably work better in the short run, and maybe in the mid-to-long run (until Pyrite would start getting metabreath feats for the napalm breath of doom). Might as well get the idea out and listen for feedback before the level bump hits and I need to actually choose whether to switch or not.

Gren
Gnoll - Ranger(1)/Barbarian(1)/Totemist(1)
(Advances to Ranger(1)/Barbarian(2)/Totemist(4)/Totem Rager(x))
Unlocks: Healing item package (level 1/2), Claws of the Wyrm (level 3), Totemist (levels 4-6), Cobalt Rage (levels 7/8), Totem Rager (levels 9-11), undecided beyond that.
(I am assuming gnoll gets unlock for their "gnoll level", so at ECL 4 when I take my 3rd class level I have my 4th unlock available. Is that right?)
Str - 21 (bump at 4th HD)
Dex - 8
Con - 16
Int - 12
Wis - 8
Cha - 6
Feats: 1: Power Attack, 3: Cleave, 6: Cobalt Rage, 9+:?

Fighting style: wades in and bloodies his claws using his +7 str bonus when raging with his two 1d6 primary claw attacks per round (plus enhancement bonus from essentia making it a magic weapon). Other soulmelds can be varied as needed, though the one that gives a limited form of Scent to go with his Track feat appeals to me flavor-wise. Heart of Fire also seems brutally useful once I get the Totem Chakra Bind (for extra 2d4 fire damage per hit with the claws). After combat, I can support with healing from a couple Wands of CLW.

Still need some work on background/personality matters. Any thoughts?

I have a classic halfling rogue! Originally was a halfling urban ranger, intending to be a famous private investigator... but I adapted him to the rules of the campaign. Becoming a master inquisitive was his plan, but I'm not so sure about it right now.

Jarei d'Deneith, member of the Defenders Guild with a dragon mark (the shield other one is quiet good for a bodyguard). Loyal to his house, and as such utterly dedicated to the jobs he takes regardless of morals. If his bosses tell him to protect somebody that is what he will do. It is not his place to think too much.

Fighter/Rogue going for Tactical Soldier - assuming that still is possible (need to check the 2.0 rules). I wish that Listen, Sense Motive and Spot were Fighter skills or else I would not have taken rogue level. I contemplated ranger, but that was a bit too wilderness orientated in my opinion. O well, it allows the character to even be a better bodyguard by investing some skill points in Search, Gather Information, Knowledge (local) and basic etiquette and that at the cost of 1 feat, a few hit points and BAB.

Gren: Gnoll hunter/spiritualist from the Talenta Plains.

Gren saw a cloud shaped like a landshark one day, and followed it to his destiny, as a brutal shock troop of the Blackwheel Company. Gren is a fast moving and brutally powerful hunter, with a strange ability to manifest spiritual powers from the various magical beasts he and his tribe hunt and revere. He fights primarily with a mix of tangat and boomerang for now, at least until he can start manifesting the claws of a landshark.

Current level (per level bump): Ranger 1/Barbarian 1/Totemist 1.
Long term goal: Ranger 1/Barbarian 1/Totemist 4/Scout 4/Exemplar 5. Because using a +50 jump check as diplomacy is so wrong it's right.
