Hello all!

I'd like to know if there's a way to make poisons less expensive in XE.

Since they're one use items, they're subject to the rule about consumable items, and should cost x5 normal price (which is already expensive).

There's a way to work it around? Or, maybe, they're not subject to that rule?

Thanks!

They certainly are subject to that rule but I don't know of any way to get around it.

I think there was even some question as to whether they are even allowed.

They are consumable. They have a game effect. Why would you think they should be 'cheaper' than they are in the DMG? Alchemical items, potions, wands, etc. aren't any cheaper than they are in the rules. Poisons will run you about 375gp to 3,000gp for most poisons, and up to over 20k for the really nice stuff. I don't see this as a problem at all.

Because cheap poisons (375gp) requires a really low roll for NPCs in the same level the PCs are (7th when the new adventures come).
When you get something a little better the price gets really hight for 'one use only item that can be of no use'.

There's no way to lower that cost, with some skill or something like that, like you cam do with potions, etc etc etc?

thats why I mainly use Drow Poison. Sure the DC save is easy, but, the save on just about every poison is easy (something about D&D I never really understood... IRL, poison really can't be shrugged off like that). Pretty much, your gambling on the enemy getting a bad fort save. Drow poison is cheap enough that I don't mind that gamble. Dont count on it for assassinations, but if it happens to work in the midst of a combat, its practically an instant kill (unconcious in a fight is pretty much as good as dead).

I sometimes carry Sassone Leaf Residue since it does some pretty damage, but the easy saving throw generally makes it not worth the cost.

The key is that poisons are not meant to be used every battle and you need to pick your targets appropriately. Each poison offers 2 saves, and you have to make both to shrug off the effects. Making the first one in no way impacts the need to make a 2nd.

You usually don't want to use a poison against the fighter or other combat brute. However, a 7th level wizard is likely to have a +3 Fort save, meaning a 35% chance for 1d6 Con immediately (Black adder which is cheap at 120gp) and another 35% chance 1 minute later.

ID Moss is a great one to lace a caster's drink with if you have the chance (125gp a pop).

There are a lot of good poisons less than 200gp a pop.

It's too bad Extraordinary Artisan doesn't apply to mundane (including alchemical and poison) crafting. :(

Poison should just be used as a plot device anyway, as none of it poses an immediate threat to an adventurer. Sure a snake can kill you in a matter of minutes, but average combat rounds last a half a minute. So assuming you haven't been able to kill your intended target after 5 combat rounds, I seriously doubt that they would lack the fortitude to ignore the effects of the poison.

Sure it does! The secondary save occurs after a minute of exposure, but the primary effect is immediate. If you get cut with a Drow Poisoned weapon, and you fail your save, you are unconscious for at least 1 minute (at which time you get to make the secondary save). Being unconscious for 1 minute in combat = death.
Lacuna and Menia use them quite a bit, as you might recall from CoS #5
