In our home game I use "knowstones" from Dragon, which can be purchased to allow spontaneous casters to "know" additional spells. The cost is the spell level squared.

I do not own every book on the source list, so I am wondering if there is a like item available in one of the many sources for XE. If someone can help me out, I will appreciate it.

As an aside, does anyone know when the 7th level Fastplay PCs will be published?

Cheers,
Steve

the closest items are the runestaffs from magic item compendium. They allow the user to cast the spells the staff grants access to 2 or 3 times a day (depending on the staff) by expending a prepared arcane spell or an arcane spell slot of the same level or higher.

for instance a runestaff might be called the "runestaff of force" (completely made up) which allows the user to cast magic missile, shield and force wall each 2 times per day by expending a spell slot or prepared spell equal to or higher than the spell in the staff.

the drawbacks to runestaffs are that they are somewhat expensive (4k and up) and the spells in them can only be used a few times a day, but i beleive that the spells being cast use the caster level of the staffs which is usually 13, so most of the time this will improve the caster level of your spells

I think what you're looking for is the Momento Magica. They are on page 164 of the MIC and priced a bit more it sounds like the "knowstones" were; 1500*level squared.

Knowstones and Momentos function differently. Knowstones are imprinted with a spell and when in the possession of a spontaneous caster allow that caster to cast that spell with their normal 'spell slots / day' as if the spell were known to them. Momentos function like Pearls of Power for spontaneous casters.

Ah, misunderstood enzors' description of the knowstone's function. Sorry. :embarrass
