| Marcia_S01-28-07, 09:53 AM | In "Only the Good Die Young", there's a mithril shirt that is listed as treasure and that if the PCs spend 500 gp to have it fixed, they can use the shirt. Since it's only possible to get it fixed after the end of the mod, does this mean that they have access to a reduced cost mithril shirt in future mods? Several players have asked about it and I don't really know what to tell them, as any other item that they find turns into EV after the mod. Thanks Marcia |
| Istaran01-29-07, 05:36 PM | I could be mistaken, but I suspect this is a rather odd case of Event Treasure: specifically, if you pay the 500 to have it fixed you can keep it until the end of the event. Mildly handy at a con, but otherwise irrelevant. Only story objects, EV, and exp carry over to the next event, as far as I can tell. |
| Mherduwynn01-29-07, 09:16 PM | PLEASE keep all mentions of items in modules to private emails. This is a prime example of a spoiler. Essentially, the item in question is there so that any PC, after the adventure, who wishes to pay 500 GP can have a mithril chain shirt. It should be recorded in every playing PC's Adventure Journal, as well as when the repair (costing 500 gp) is performed (which occurs between adventures). Once repaired, it can be used from then on. That answer your question? |
| pedr01-29-07, 09:29 PM | I've not played the mod, don't know anything about it, but I have a question about this mechanic. Is this 'spend 500gp from your EV to get this item' which would imply you could re-tool your choice, or is it 'deduct 500gp from your EV forever to gain this item' which would mean you can't - and would seem to be a major departure from the re-tooling system. If it's the second, can you sell it at a later date? For how much? |
| Mherduwynn01-30-07, 05:17 PM | It's the second, and you would be able to sell it for the value of a mithril chain shirt. Thus, it is a way to make 600 GP is a PC has no need for the item. (1,100 base price minus the 500 needed to repair it for sale). And before someone inevitably asks, yes it can be sold before repairing it for 600 GP instead. -A |
| JJeff01-30-07, 08:46 PM | Since this is, like, being discussed openly.... August, The mithril chain shirt is listed in the mod as "...a badly damaged mithril chain shirt. The shirt needs 500gp worth of materials to repair it before it can be worn; the Covenant of Light provides the labor for free. The condition of the shirt prevents it from being saleable; it has no value unless it is repaired." Shouldn't it be repaired for free and not be saleable until repaired? I don't get it. |
| Marcia_S01-30-07, 11:19 PM | This mod expired about 2 weeks ago, so it's not a spoiler, anymore. |
| Marcia_S01-30-07, 11:23 PM | So, if you sell it for a 600 gp profit, how is that recorded in regards to your EV? Is this recorded on your AJ and is that sufficient "proof" that you earned extra gold? It's a nice idea, but without a story object to track it, I don't see how that will work. |
| Mherduwynn02-02-07, 07:30 PM | The Covenant offers the labor for free, but not the materials. As for the 600 gp profit, yes. The AJ is enough. When you have your tracking sheet printed, just use the Adventure Journal to justify the additional amount. If GMs give you difficulties, you can always refer them to this post. In truth, this simply convinces me not to offer discounted items any more. I hate that mechanics have to get in the way of a nice gesture... (And even though the module is out of circulation, it is still technically a spoiler to discuss the specifics of an adventure because they are occasionally used for other purposes, such as retail day kits, etc. I wasn't coming down on you, Marcia; it was just a general note for something to avoid in the future please.) -August |
| Istaran02-02-07, 07:51 PM | It seems a bit much that it would be sellable for full price. Normal adventurers sell things at half price. That would be 50 gp profit in this case (550 return on 500 investment). Alternatively you can keep the mithril chain shirt at less than half price. If you can sell it back at full price then this ultimately is just an overcomplicated mechanic to give away 600 extra EV to your players. If that is the desired outcome, then it would be simpler to just do so outright. Blackwheel Company certainly does (though I don't think they had any quite so high so far). I like the idea of a specific discount such that the PC can have a modest profit or a significant savings by keeping the item at just below "wholesale" price. Letting players resell the discount item at full price is a bit of an abuse of the EV system in my opinion. Of course, I'm not a factionmaster. But it does add more flavor if getting the full power of the discount requires you to actually use the particular item found. It is especially reasonable when the item in question is something with such widespread usefulness. (even a heavy armor user could use it as a "night shirt" to have some AC in case of night attacks. ) |
| JJeff02-02-07, 08:34 PM | In truth, this simply convinces me not to offer discounted items any more. I hate that mechanics have to get in the way of a nice gesture... I understand and we appreciate it. I guess it was just that a lot of us were confused, but as long as you say it works this way. It does. Let's all not nitpick on mechanics. You're doing a great job, continue doing it. (And even though the module is out of circulation, it is still technically a spoiler to discuss the specifics of an adventure because they are occasionally used for other purposes, such as retail day kits, etc. I wasn't coming down on you, Marcia; it was just a general note for something to avoid in the future please.) -August Ok, we apologize collectively. |
| Mherduwynn02-07-07, 06:14 PM | Certainly no need for apologies; I was just noting that there are reasons to keep matters like this off the lists and in private mail. Honestly, I am glad this one was posted as it has been a source of questions since the module's release (which otherwise went really well). :) -A |
