From whence did the Raptorans come?

Why are they affiliated with the Covenant of Light?

Where do they fit into the Eberron cosmology, landscape and society?

Just curious as I agitate for an all Raptoran party in my area...

They are a relatively new race from Races of the Wild.

My guess is there particular affiliation is because of the race's over all lean toward goodness.

In the Player's Guide to Eberron they are said ot live mostly in Xendrik; though there are some who have migrated to the main continent.

The Raptorans of the Covenant of Light are generally affiliated with a single flock that serves the city of Stormreach as aerial scouts, guardians and hunters. They are devoted to the Light in all its guises, free to worship their own deity while venerating both the Silver Flame and the Sovereign Host in their own way.

Of particular note about the Stormreach Raptorans is their home, a large elemental airship called the Aviary. This vessel houses more than a hundred of the winged folk and is often in air dock over Radiant Hold.

Hope this helps,

What's the name of the flock? Is the Aviary detailed in Secrets of Xen'drik? (My copy's still on order.)

When we register a character we have to name her. A raptoran doesn't gain her adult name until she acquires the ability to fly (at five hit dice), and surely she wouldn't tell outsiders the nickname used by her flock. Once the level bump reaches five then presumably we'll create new raptorans with adult names, but until then do we register these characters under their birth names with the understanding that they'll only be used for a few months?

My guess is (completely unofficial) that you'll create your 1st level character with whatever name you intend to give them at level 5. You can call yourself or tell others whatever name you want.

Thanks. I guess it's that or just play the character unregistered (and therefore at minimum level and equipment) until we reach level five.

I highly suggest using a "name" you wish associated with the character as far as the database is concerned. It will not invalidate your character to have first his or her "fledgling name" and then adult name on the character sheet even if it does not match what's on file. Just try to stay in a general theme so the GMs do not look askance at the difference.

The Aviary is not detailed in Secrets of Xen'drik; it will be the subject of its own web article soon. Until then, it can be assumed as a large skyship captained by a half-elf sympathetic to both the Covenant of Light and raptorans (since he is lifemated to one, no children) with a population of more than 150 raptorans of varying ages inside. It rarely leaves its air mooring over Radiant Hold, the CoL keep near Xen'drik.

The flock's name is the Shii'lyr'tai, which roughly translates to "Born between Blue and Green" (a reference to the sky above and the jungle below).

Thanks! That's great to know. :D

Do some raptorans live in the wild nearby? (I'm thinking in terms of backgrounds for raptoran barbarians.)

There are a few "wild" raptorans that choose not to live on the Aviary or in their ancestral home in the mountains many miles southeast of Stormreach. These feral raptorans are welcome among their people but choose to live apart; druids, rangers and barbarians are common within the wilds...

How does this air dock work? Is this how low-level raptorans get back and forth from the Aviary? (They can't fly until they have five hit dice.)

Correct. The air dock operates almost exactly like the light cranes of Stormreach's harbor; four platforms can raise and lower on lines of magical force, allowing goods and personnel to come and go from the ship at need.

Also, would a raptoran have to use an expansion slot to access the raptoran foot spike exotic weapon from Races of the Wild?

We finished a DM's Mark last night that brought several raptorans from the Eletai flock (which I made up) up to Stormreach. They're on the Walk of the Four Winds, and will be introduced to the Aviary next session. The party is composed entirely of raptorans, with two barbarians, a cleric, a rogue, and a sorcerer. They encountered Renvis along the way while he was on a mission for the Covenant of Light, so that's one less NPC to throw at them when we start Divine Inspiration next week.

Some of the younger raptorans play a drinking game called Tip Top. They climb to the top of a building where the Aviary is moored, and try to balance their way up a mooring rope (or possibly some line secured for this purpose). If they fall off they take a shot.
