I wanted to extend a personal welcome to each and every one of you. The Covenant of Light opens its arms to members of any good creed and any race under the Moons above.

Come, all of you, and be counted among the Champions of Xen'drik!

Thanks for the great starter thread Frobi-wan.

With all the likely knights or paladins running around, I'm thinking wizard or artificer (bufficer) would be a "good" choice.

My idea for the Covenant of Light is a bit overzealous, and I like it that way:

The pyromaniac.

The simple full build (that I will most likely never reach, but still) is Sorcerer 6 / Fire Elemental Savant 4 / Sacred Exorcist 5 / Silver Pyromancer 5.

Basically, we're talking about a Silver Flame zealot who believes in purification through fire. It's a shame that Silver Pyromancer can't be taken before 15th level, with this build (unless I can somehow unlock one of the PrCs through a campaign card).

Raptorian cleric -> skypledged

Too bad i can't take both racial substitution levels and a non PHB/ECS domain. I would have liked to take the Sky Doman and the sub levels, but the Air Domain will have to do.

It'll depend on what the rules are for using Kalashtar characters and the new material from Complete Psionic. I'd like to do a Kalashtar Divine Mind, but I don't know if that will require a new campaign card or if I'll be able to do it with the existing Kalashtar cards.

If not, I'll probably do a Raptoran fighter aiming for Stormtalon.

Couldn't you simply unlock the substitution levels at 5th-level and retool your cleric class features at that point?

Acc'ding to the Campaign Guidelines, substitution levels have to be unlocked at 1st level and may only be unlocked for the class you picked at first level.

Well, what do you know. That's another difference with Mark of Heroes.

Still, I would opt for the substitution levels and become a dedicated air elemental summoner (i.e. Augment Elemental + Augment Summoning). Skypledged is just sweetening the deal, with the added access to Summon Nature's Ally.

Keep in mind that air elementals weapon finesse and use Dex to hit, so the Strength bonus doesn't help to-hit,although it will improve the damage, and of course more CON is always good.

Access to Summon Nature's Ally isn't too important, since I believe one of the perks of the racial substitution levels is putting the Air Elementals on the choices for the Various Summon Monster spells. I could be wrong, though; you should check. Another perk to getting druid spells is having access to Cat's Grace, so you can craft Gloves of Dex. (I was hoping to grab the Celerity domain for that purpose, but then realized that the spellpool would come through for me).

I think, for Covenant, I'm planning a Karrnathi Human Cleric leading to Bone Knight - assuming that the restriction on the Cleric class in the XCS was a misprint - otherwise a[n ex-]Paladin instead of Cleric. I just like the idea of the Bone Knight - could make things interesting in a campaign in to a realm like Xen'drik.

Thoughts?

I'll grant that Augment Summoning gives you nothing in terms of accuracy for air elemental summoning, but it's still a good feat to have around, especially when you need to summon something other than an air elemental. As for my comment on Summon Nature's Ally, it's very simple. The summon lists from SNA feel superior to me than those from SM.

I've been interested in the knight class ever since I saw it in the PH2, so naturally I'm gravitating towards playing that. I'm thinking a dwarven knight would be a great fit, one who's dedicated himself to the ideals of the Covenant (whatever those might be).

Just registered him:

A Beasthide shifter ranger. I burned 1 AP for the "Blood
of the Beast" creation card, so I get the Shifter Ranger
Substitution levels.

I was actually pretty impressed with how I could juggle
the 25 point build for reasonable stats, but the the
-2 Int mod brought that to 9. He ain't smart, but when
shifted his AC goes up to 20 (I took Beasthide Shifter Elite
as my feat, 14 Dex and a Chain Shirt), which is damn good
for a 1st level character.

Oh yes (I'd made a Cabal of Shadows dwarven sorcerer before I made
this one), but I figured it made more sense to burn the AP up front and
save the expansion slots for other stuff since I had the card, and rather
liked the additional stuff it unlocked.

Halfling paladin. Wielding a lance. Smiting evil on the back of a charging clawfoot.

It will be glorious.

That's provided I can make a decent paladin with a 25-point buy. Think I'll focus on dexterity and charisma to reinforce the halfling's dex bonus and improved saving throws. Keep Ride skill maxed and put points into Handle Animal until 5th level when he gets a more intelligent mount.

As for feats, I'll probably start with Dinosaur Wrangler. Mounted Combat doesn't offer much until his Ride skill is high enough to beat the clawfoot's AC of 16 on a regular basis. It'd probably be better to save that feat for 3rd level.

Any comments? I've heard mention of a Halfling Outrider prestige class but know nothing of it. Would this offer a lot to this character? I'll have to check out Complete Warrior next time I'm in a gaming store.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go Dwarven Knight/Dwarwen Defender (with maybe the dwarven fighter racial substitution level at first), but a Changeling wizard/recaster is very tempting, especially since there probably won't be many others in this faction ...

Though, if I can get my hands on a drow card, I will definitely be going drow ranger/fighter/scorpion wraith (tempest too if I get up to a high enough level).

I'm thinking about a human rogue. He's all about exploration and liberation of interesting artifacts, with the idea that they might be used for good, but certainly need to be prevented from being used for evil. I'l probably stay away from the truly criminal activities, and most of the charisma-based skills, focusing much more on the physical skills needed to safely liberate and sanctify powerful reliics of the past.
I figure he will eventually take some Dungeon Delver levels, and there's also the possibility of supplementing his skills with a level or two of sorcerer (I've seen this work quite well as a combination.)
He's a bit pigeon-holed, and won't be as much use in more city or wilderness oriented settings, but I figure sneak attack is always useful.
I'm thinking I'll better my chances by using my level 1 exemption to take Tactile Trapsmith from Complete Adventurer although with all the skill points necessary, I can't throw int away. Then take Dodge as my bonus feat.

You probably won't want Outrider as it primarily focuses on improved ranged attack and mobility. A better choice given your description would be Cavalier, especially since a Paladin who multiclasses into this class can continue to advance as a paladin. You'd have to change your feats (or take 1or 2 fghter lvls) though as it is somewhat feat prequisite intensive (Spirited Charge, Weapon Focus (lance), Mounted Combat, & Ride-by Attack).

If a Wizard was a Necro Spec. would he get attacked by his fellow COL members for using "evil" magic? I was thinking of playing it like he is only really good at necromancy and only has spells like summon/control undead, ray of emfeeblement, and other necro type spells.
Mherduwynn

08-30-06, 08:32 PM
First, the Litany covers this in that it mentions combat only as a last resort. If the Necromancer never uses his magic in an evil way and never gives his fellow CoL members a reason to be hostile, there will never be an active conflict.

Of course, such a character would always be under scrutiny, might constantly have to prove his good intentions and might never be fully trusted even by his companions.

That in itself might be a really cool reason to play him. :)

It can mean either, though a d'xxx name is fairly empty without the Dragonmark to back it up.

As per the CS 1.0 release, the noble title option is left purposefully undefined for the time being. This allows you to tailor it as a roleplaying opportunity; if you want to be a "titled" knight, it's a solid option for getting Sir (or Lady) in front of your name and having it mean something.

Otherwise, you are basically Bill S. Preston... Esquire! :)

I think it'll be better for you to take Devoted Tracker feat from Complete Adventurer (allows you to multiclass paladin/ranger too) instead of knight training, at least you gain some side benefits too, though u can't take it at level 1.
EberronMoses

Yes, Reinholt ir'Krauss would be great. Yeah, i notice it now, the royal families get ir' and the dragonmarked houses get d' . Didn't really notice a separation earlier. Very nice.

entering tangent: U know, looking at this board really makes me realize what the greatest part of dnd is. Its not the setting, or the stat building, or even looting(tho that is a lot of fun too :D ) Its the difference between people. The way 6 different people can have 6 different ways of solving the same problem. Each of you is thinking of what will be the most fun in this faction and each of u has something different and fun. Its when someone does something awesome that you didn't think about that dnd becomes fun and u realize the true versatility and awesomeness of this game.

....and video games will never be as fulfilling.

Thanks man! You just saved me a feat. I wanted to take levels of Cavalier, but for some reason I was alternating levels of Knight/Paladin, which required me to take Knightly training so I could freely multiclass. Now I can use that feat on something that actually helps me! And get to cavalier faster.

There are lots of good thinkers on these boards, and some people who have played some CoL scenarios. So can anyone tell me whether a changeling rogue/telepath will be worth playing? Specifically, I'm looking at the rogue substitution level and focusing on the interpersonal skills--Diplomacy, Gather Info, Sense Motive. Then using the Uncommon Changeling card, take levels of telepath (not egoist, though it's a racial sub level too).

It seems like many RPGA adventures have significant opportunities to use Cha based skills. And Cha is often a dump stat for most characters. The Litany emphasizes combat as a last resort, so I was hoping that Cha would come in useful (though I fully expect combat as well!). What do my fellow members of the Covenant think?

It's either that or play an aasimar paladin. I know, not too original, but I love the concept. It's just that I have melee characters in BWC and CC as well.
Mherduwynn

09-17-06, 04:58 PM
I will only note this:

NO Covenant of Light module will EVER be released without at least one opportunity to use Diplomacy and other Charisma based skills to significantly affect the adventure's outcome.

That said, it may not always be vital that the PCs have diplomatic abilities but it will ALWAYS be helpful.

Considering that most CoL characters are clerics, paladins, and knights it would definately help to have a rogue along, though the changeling rogue racial sub levels lose some of the basic rogueness to be strictly social oriented. Its still very usefull to have excellent social skills, while most of those classes can be good at diplomacy/sense motive they just aren't smart enough to always make it worth spending all of their skill points on a couple of social skills.

I've been meaning to ask, why a Valenar elf instead of an Aerenal elf? It's possible but pretty unlikely.

Mechanics wise:
Valenar elves get the scimitar feat, Bladebearer of the Valenar, which I might later expand to use a falchion or possibly (but not likely) a double scimitar.

Roleplaying wise:
Lets me play outside the norm, and besides, the court must have specifically picked a Valenar elf for a particular reason (favored soul being the god chooses you, not vice-versa like a cleric). Perhaps they have some sort of destiny already planned out for them, or perhaps the court is just trying to keep a broader knowledge/persona base then just the Aerenial elves.

On the matter of the Noble Title option; it does allow you to use the word "Sir" (or "Lady") in front of your name and the "ir" as a prefix. It doesn't give you any direct relation to a named NPC in the setting but it is a nice option for players wishing to legitimize their characters in a noble or royal sense.

Wizard 1

Member of Silver Flame clergy (any problem declaring I'm a member of the clergy as a wizard? if most of the clergy are experts, why not a wizard?)

Doesn't seem like rogues will be popular on this particular faction. I'll end up running a fastplay in our group. I'll be putting the fastplays to use in this. I'm trying to get my classes spread around really well. My group is trying to get it worked out so that we have 4 DM's running a faction each and each playing in the three others. I'm running Blackwheel which is fun. I'm a warlock in cabal so theres my spellcasting, This will be my melee character. I'm thinking about giving my paladin two weapon fiting cuz that will rock and I'll cross class tumble. U never really hear of Paladins who aren't covered in 80 pounds of armor. I see y tho, they're geared towards it, none of their skills have check penalties. Then, if we ever get Crimson Codex running I'll be playing a shifter rogue/ranger of morgrave university acquisitions going for extreme explorer. Can u say Indiana Jones? But yeah, people seem to think rogues aren't holy enuff for this faction. I just hope the villains think traps aren't either.

My character is Eramil, known as Wildheart, a elf ranger. I spent my first two expansions lots on the Elf Ranger Substitution Levels from Races of the Wild and I'll probably prestige into a Horizon Walker. Recently leveled up after playing the second adventure.

I'm making dwarf cleric/monk/sacred fist. The sacred fist blends really well with the silver flame with the sacred flames ability.
Now I just hope i get a chance to play, there aren't any XE games here. Iw ould love if we could play online but...

I am tempted towards doing a lawful good Drow Soulborn.

I really like magic of Incarnum and I already have an Incarnate in Crimson Codex.

Covenant of Light just seems a good place to have a Drow because it increases the odds of my drow adventuring with a paladin(unlike CLW, lay on hands does not automatically fail on an unconscious drow).

Lastly, I have never played a drow or a soulborn before.

Drow Paladin, convert to the Silver Flame. Maybe with the True Believer feat, just for roleplaying purposes. Far more Lawful than Good: 'We're going to do the right thing now. It doesn't matter how many people have to die.'

I wanted to play a Lawful Good Aasimar warlock (going for Enlightened Spirit in Complete Mage), but I couldn't do that, so I picked something else.

Xan'razaz is a Chaotic Neutral drow wizard. He's the kind of guy that would likely fit better in the Cabal of Shadows, or maybe even the Crimson Codex, but he's a sellsword (sellspell?) and the Covenant won out in the bid. He's not the nicest fellow. In fact, out of his adventuring party (clerics, knights, and barbarians) he was the meanest. However, it's sort of a facade, an attempt to look like your average tough as nails drow in front of everyone else in the group. While he is 'tough as nails', when he needs to he won't hesitate to put himself (all five hp of himself) in the line of fire to rescue a comrade in arms, or give up his only healing potion to a wounded little girl, even if he needs it more. He's a fun paradox to play, and I'm definately enjoying him.

For feats and skills, I took Collegiate Wizard from Complete Arcane (expansion slots for the win), giving me a ton of spells to choose from. Skill-wise, I'm concentrating on slowly gaining at least one rank in each and every knowledge skill. Like I said, he likely belongs in the Crimson Codex.

These all sound like fun characters to play!

I hope I get the chance to run for all of you (not at the same time, PLEASE! :) ) at an upcoming convention.

Take care,

I'm choosing to play a knight for CoL and maybe 2 levels of Marshall (even though I'll have to wait until level 9 when I can afford the expansion slots)

The build includes 3 of the Combat Focus feats from PHBII (Combat Focus, Combat Defense and The one that grants Fast Healing) I'm also intending to take 'stand still' from Psionics handbook to help prevent enemies from getting past me and attacking my party members. Since those are all 'locked' feats I'll be pretty much full on my expansion list :(. Right up until level 14

I'm playing half of a duo-- I'm playing Ogden, a Halfling Sorcerer, who partnered with a Warforged Ranger (infiltrator). My 1st level spells are Repair Light Damage and Color Spray... it's been interesting so far.

My gaming group moslty runs Cabal and Blackwheel mods, but will be running a couple Covenant mods soon, so hopefully by then Faiths of Eberron will be allowed and I can play my Valenar Cleric (Spirits of the Past)/Ranger/Revanent Blade. Gonna be a hoot.

Goblin cleric of the Silver Flame (we are making a Silver Flame only group)... I know, not very powerful, but it is something new and different. At the moment I am trying to decide on a personality, but it probably is going to be a grovler with a low self-esteem who thinks that since he is a lowly goblin he does not know nearly enough of the religion as the more traditional followers. I am just not sure whether he I want this to be an act or not, depending on whether I want to go for the Inquisitor prestige class (or something similar) or for the Divine Oracle. I am definitely contemplating taking a level or 2 as a rogue...
