A few questions about expansion slots and campaign cards [Archive] - Wizards Community

1. You're allowed to declare you're unlocking a racial substitution package at 1st level, for your 1st level class, in exchange for expansion slots 1 and 2. Check. If a racial substitution level gives you a locked feat for free, do you automatically have to spend another expansion slot for it?

I'm specifically thinking of the dragonblooded sorcerer racial substitution 1, which gives you Draconic Heritage in exchange for your familiar. Does this cost your first 3 slots? Or will my third slot be available?

2. If I have a creation card that unlocks a base class that I want to take, I'm going to need that card at the table when I create my character. Check. Do I have to take my 1st level as that class? Or can I take another class at 1st (say, with a favorable racial substitution package)? Can I use a Creation Card as an Expansion card, that is can I pop it in at level 2, and still have some meaningful pool of action points for my first level?

Thanks for your consideration and ponderance.

Well, I would say it is automatically unlocked, but I'm not sure where you are getting access to the dragonblooded race.

This might be limited by the character tracker. You'll have to check it out and see. I do not have a ruling on the legality of using a creation card to unlock a class to be taking after first level.

"Dragonblooded" isn't technically a race, it's a subtype; the Spellscale race has the Dragonblooded subtype.

Yep. Didn't look at my book, and was thinking Dragonborn. Nevermind. In that case, consider the Draconic Heritage feat unlocked for free if you take the substitution levels. I may be overuled, however, so keep that in mind.

I hate when I am overruled. It's like all those people in charge think they're the boss of you or something. I mean come, talk about a power trip! Sheesh!

Of course then again, SOMEONE needs to lend merit to the old addage "it's good to be king." ;)

Just rememebred the problem with this, you can't unlock the Racial substitutions in Races of the Dragon, it's not listed as one of the optional sources.

Now if that changes before you play your spellscale for the firs time, you'll be fine, but otherwise it seems to be a no for the moment
