Anyone have any thoughts on the puzzle in CC#3?

I'm getting to run this as a GM, and was confused about what to convey to the PCs about the puzzle. With the explanation I've received, I know just what to do.

Hi Heirodule:

I came up with the puzzle for the module. I'm not sure what to tell you as there is a fine line that can be crossed if you give too much away. We wanted it to be challenging but not impossible. When I ran the playtest, it took my PCs about 10-15 minutes to figure out the puzzle. I didn't give them any extra information beyond what was in the mod, specifically the Dragon Prophecy handout. They definitely struggled and I was sorely tempted to help them but they didn't need it.

I've never happy to hear someone is having trouble with a mod and it makes me wonder if we could have made some of the clues clearer. I glad it challenged you but I'm sorry if it made you or your players feel ignorant. Such was not our goal.

I'll PM you one other thought.

Best wishes

David Lotempio

Edit:

One suggestion for Judges is to give PCs an opportunity to perform a skill or Intelligence check to get a clue (no pun intended). Pertinent skills might be Decipher Script, Knowledge (history), Knowledge (arcana) or Spellcraft even. A successful check could allow the Judge to clarify the relation of one of the research items to the puzzle.

As always - keep it fun for the players.

Having played this mod over the holidays, I thought the puzzle was about the right difficulty. It took our group about 10-15 minutes also I think to figure it out. It's always hard to come up with puzzles and challenges for a wide spectrum of players.

The puzzles (particularly in CC2 and CC3) are the reason that Crimson Codex is my primary faction :) I just hope that there is more to come of these 'mysterious subfactions' within the Codex.

I've edited my post to remove some of the potential spoiler. Thanks for the help.

Just keep putting out the quality modules for Codex and we're all happy :) Thanks for all your efforts, both of you.

Maybe I'm missing something but where the hell are the rest of the puzzle pieces? How do the PCs find them? I'm having a lot of problems prepping this module. I'll post my comments later for feedback but to date I am finding this particular module very troublesome.

Pls refer to page 4 of the module, second last paragraph.

bertman -

I sent you a Private Message with some advice regarding the other puzzle pieces. Let me know if you need any other assistance and I'll try to help.

Thanks for letting us know about your difficulty. When in doubt, wing it and have fun with the players.

Good thinking, JJeff!
