Is it permissible to use expansion slots take the "Dragonborn Sorcerer" substitution levels from Races of the Dragon at first level if playing a SpellScale Sorcerer?

From reading the Campaign Standards, it seems that Races of the Dragon is not an available source book, which would suggest not, however the Crimson Codex specifically allows a race from this book.

Wow, now this is a disappointing oversight. Any reasons as to why Races of the Dragon is disallowed?

Because the book was not published yet when the CS was created.

With the much-foreshadowed release of a new CS imminent, would you be able to confirm or deny that RotD is on the list of available sources? Or do we just have to wait and see?

Let me put it this way. I would be very surprised if Races of the Dragon was made completely unavailable for access.

Unless, of course, you're a member of the Crimson Codex. We factionmasters had an internal game of rock, paper, scissors to determine who got to pick first in the "First Annual D&D Campaign Standards Source Book Draft" (FADADCSSBD for short). The draft was designed so that some books would only be accessible to our very greedy little factions. I drew the first pick and selected the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. Championship baby, mark it down!

I picked up Races of the Dragon for the Blackwheel Company in the 9th round as an absolute steal. I wouldn't worry though, while the Crimson Codex's first overall pick of "Stormwrack" was surprising, it should provide a lot of valuable character options to explore. ;)

Our Fleets will soon be ambushing your lackeys on their way between Xen'Drik and Sharn :P

Which I find ironic, considering that the only faction that currently gets any content from Races of the Dragon is indeed the Crimson Codex.

Obvious humour aside, I'm really hoping we get Stormwrack story-based access to PrCs in the BWC. I'm eager to play a Scarlet Corsair.

yes, all major decisions shall be solved via rock, paper, scissors. Thats how we got our current president :D Regardless of how silly the idea of a supplement draft sounds, I'm glad Stormwrack got picked up by someone cuz i want to play me a pirate.

off the topic, i got a character thats going to be able raise dead at level 6. Can I start collecting bodies now? I plan on storing them under my bed in a tarp till i hit lvl six. It stinks a little but I'm used to it ;p I want to know cuz we recently fought an inspired in an inspired vessel. Those guys make exceptional physical specimens therefore, awesome skeletons. The inspired get the humans of Sarlona while they're alive, but when they die my priest is there to read them their funeral rites in the name of the Flame and raise them into his service.

I assume you mean animating the dead rather than raising them. Animating the dead is generally frowned upon in society in general, and it is definitely frowned upon in the Crimson Codex. Not only does raising the dead destroy the creature's soul, but it also is disruptive to the force behind the draconic Prophecy.

That said, I'm sure there are certain elements with the Crimson Codex who take an "the ends justify the means" approach to just about anything. So the simpler answer is that you cannot walk around with an undead army behind you. And you'd better be wary of who you are with before you cast the spell. A first transgression will likely get you a stern lecture, and the second will get you thrown out of the faction. And since you know too much already, you cannot exist outside the faction . . .
