A few questions... [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi all.

After sitting down with my players last night to work on their characters, I got a couple of questions that I could not answer straight out. I told them that I would look into the answers for them, and see where they lead. This group has decided to play as a Crimson Codex group, so this presented a single question for me to ask as well.

1) One of my players asked about casting evil spells as a mage. He is considering a lawful nuetral wizard who uses some evil spells as a path to power. Now, I know with clerics they are nto allowed to use spells contrary to their alignment (good can't use evil, etc), but we could find no restriction for mages. Would the casting of an evil spell necessarily constitute an alignment shift, or only if the outcome causes a truely evil act (like levelling a village of Good aligned peasants)?

2) Action points. Are they reqenerated per session, or per level as the Eberron Campaign Sourcebook states?

And as for my question.

I have set up our first session on the 8th of Novemeber. I have scheduled the first Well of Woe module, but with the decision to go with an all Crimson Codex group, I'd like to have them play through the first two Crimson Codex Faction modules first. How do I go about rescheduling the Well of Woe module and setting up the Crimson codex module instead?

Thanks all for the help. Talk to you all soon.

Hi all.

Howdy!

1) One of my players asked about casting evil spells as a mage.

Casting spells with the evil descriptor, in and of themselves, does not turn a wizard character evil in one shot. Obviously if they are doing evil things with those spells, then it might. Alignment, to me, is one of the most badly conceived parts of D&D, as in some cases it is used as a strict rule mechanic, in other cases it is used as a loose guide to behavior, and in even other cases it is ignored completely. For arcane casters, just keep an eye on their motives and means, and give plenty of warning if you think good characters are not acting good, or if neutral characters are slipping into evil.

2) Action points. Are they reqenerated per session, or per level as the Eberron Campaign Sourcebook states?

They are restored after each session.

Good choice. At least play CDX1 - Prophecy's Unwitting Servant before Well of Woe. There is no way to change an order easily once created, so your best bet is to create a new order with the two faction mods. When the time comes to report Well of Woe, you can de-activate the session.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Shawn. Those are the answers I was hoping for.

Appreciate the help, and I am sure I'll come back with more questions on occasion. This will be my first RPGA sanctioned campaign, so this may be an interesting ride. :D

Talk to you all again soon.
