| catsclaw06-08-07, 11:03 PM | I'm playing an XE mod, and I decided I'd like to buy a potion of Silence. We're in Stormreach, I think I could probably track one down, but the DM insists it will cost 1,500gp, because I need to pay campaign cost for it. I think campaign cost only applies when you're outfitting your character. Who's right? |
| Herrbard06-09-07, 12:21 AM | If the DM deems the potion would be available (and he/she is free to rule it is not) you pay normal cost for the potion. However, at the end of the mod the potion disappears whether you use it or not, as you cannot take anything but event treasure with you. |
| Lilinthra06-09-07, 12:38 AM | In game, they bought a scroll of Silence instead and had enough spare money leftover that it won't make much difference either way, but would like to know for the future. It's an online run of the module, so there's definitely time to adjust since we stopped for the night. I couldn't find anything in the Campaign Standards to support the claim that consumable items have the lower DMG/PHB printed price in-game, only the "Shopping in Stormreach" section that states PCs might have an opportunity to purchase items during the adventure depending on the module's circumstances. |
| Marcus Majarra06-09-07, 03:25 AM | Campaign costs apply throughout the campaign, including during the mod. Otherwise, everyone would spend their money on consumables during a mod. The entire idea behind multiplying the cost of consumables is that these items are no longer considered consumable. If that were so, their value would be deducted from your EV with every purchase. Think of consumables as 1 use/mod, as opposed to 1 use period. |
| Wick06-09-07, 12:56 PM | OK, so I must have messed up. I was counting my potions and bullets in my EV. I guess I shouldn't? |
| pedr06-09-07, 01:12 PM | You can equip potions and bullets etc from EV. They cost 5x the book-price. If the adventure starts somewhere where you can go shopping (e.g. not on the deck of an airship or other such place!) then you can buy potions, bullets etc from shops. They still cost 5x the price. Realistic? No, but necessary for campaign balance (and in line with the recommendations/rules in the DMG for equipment in one-shot adventures) |
| Timlagor06-09-07, 04:53 PM | Catsclaw: IMO your GM was right but I'm not aware of an official answer. Your interpretation is certainly problematic. Wick: you need to track them duringthe adventure because they can only be used once per adventure but they are replenished before the next adventure. |

I've done it mostly just to avoid abuse, but also to not spend the first 30 minutes of each game shopping in Stormreach. |

If the DM deems the potion would be available (and he/she is free to rule it is not) you pay normal cost for the potion. However, at the end of the mod the potion disappears whether you use it or not, as you cannot take anything but event treasure with you. This is the same policy I use. I thought this came up on the board earlier, but I can not find the thread. Also in came up in CSH-3: For use in this module, PCs can locate scrolls and potions of endure elements and water breathing for normal DMG prices instead of the campaign price. Note that items purchased in this manner do not refresh for other adventures like other consumables in the campaign. Of particular interest the following items can be easily found at several shops near the docks: air plant (25 gp, provides 5 minutes of breathable air), aquatic longbow (400 gp, 10’ ft. range underwater) swimmer’s kit (15 gp, +2 circumstance bonus to Swim checks) and tricorne hat (15 gp, looks very fancy). Interestingly, a number of characters bought hats. Anyway, as far as I know it is up to the DM. I believe strictly speaking the x5 rule is the conservative one. Note that the gp/level limit and 5,000 gp limit for stormreach still apply to the campaign cost, no matter what price you pay. |
| JJeff06-10-07, 09:59 AM | I couldn't imagine a mod starting on the deck of an airship, or the middle of a jungle :D Surprisingly, I seem to notice this happens...well... in a particular faction only... Starting on an airship, starting in the jungle, so, oh so many times. |
| Diablo0506-10-07, 10:36 AM | My group has been playing it where items purchased in game cost normal, but disapear after the mod. How else would you ever be able to afford anything?? Cash on hand would be absoultely worthless (unless you forgot to buy non-consumable items, like your weapons or armor). During the first part of Eyes of the Lich Queen, I decided it would be a good idea to procure a couple vials of holy water. This is something I dont usually carry, as my CoS character doesnt expect to go up against much undead. I have about $100 cash on hand, enough for 4 vials of holy water. Great, more than I need. But, if I had to multiply the cost by 5, I'd be out of luck. In fact... theres few things other than standard arrows (DOH! Forgot those in my EV) that could be purchased in game. |

Any EV you do not use when you outfit your character before an event becomes cash on hand, so you CAN afford things with cash on hand just as easily as with EV. Until you hear otherwise in the next XECS or via a Dispel Confusion, items bought during an adventure cost the Campaign Cost, unless text in the adventure overrides that. Shawn Crimson Codex Guy |
| Shadowed Intent06-10-07, 11:48 AM | In fact... theres few things other than standard arrows (DOH! Forgot those in my EV) that could be purchased in game. There are fees, tolls, bribes, and of course the ever popular gather information check, especially if you are spending the extra money to get a bonus to your check. |
| Skerrit06-12-07, 09:19 AM | Shawn is correct. Unless you hear otherwise in a mod, consumables always cost x5. I know of at least one mod where you are able to buy scrolls of a specific spell that the party will need for the x1 price. |
| Istaran06-26-07, 01:53 AM | It seems like it'd be more reasonable and consistant to have your CoH = Unspent EV / 5, and then use DMG costs for everything. After all, cash on hand is a consumable that refreshes every adventure. This would simplify the material component thing (where certain spells such as identify use 1x cost, while others use 5x cost, but they all refresh. Is Jade a gem that can be used as cash like a pearl is, meaning Hail of Stone is 1x cost?) It would also reduce the abusiveness of my things like Lesser Dragon Ally (which lets me hire a 15HD dragon body-guard for 11 days each adventure when I get it..) Just my thoughts. |
