Does ECL effect starting EV? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have a question about how a character, like an Aasimar, with a level adjustment does or does not effect the character's ECL.

In the Campaign standards it states on page two that the starting gold for creating a new character is 10th level and the starting gold is 49,000 + starting gold for 1st level character.

However, on page 16 under ECL and Level Adjustments it states that Expansion slots, action points, level gold piece limit, are based upon the character's class level before the level adjustment is added. . .

Does this mean if I have an Aasimar character my starting gold would only be 36,000, for a 9th level character? It seems pretty clear that my gold piece limit is only 18,000 instead of 24,500.

Level gold piece limit refers to the limit on the gp cost of an item, not how much gold you have.

The big difference is as follows:

Your total Wealth is track on the web, this is the money you may spend and not related to your level. A friend of mine has over 120k Gp and is just 12th level.

Your Level Gold Piece limit is the amount of money you may spend on a single item. This is dependent on your level so is a drawback if you have a level adjustment.

Hope this answers your question.

Okay, so it sounds like if I am creating a brand new character for Expeditions, they start with 49,000gp + gold for their 1st level, irregardless if they have a level adjustment or not?

The main reason for my question is that 49K is the starting gold for a 10th level character, but a brand new character with a +1 level adjustment is only 9th level.

It states on page 16 of the Campaign Standards that "only the XP needed for advancement is affected by the character's level adjustment." In other words it seems to be saying that for everything else my 10th ECL character with a +1 level adjustment should be treated as a 9th level character for everything but advancing in experience points needed for the next level.

I understand that once I start adventuring, my EV will not necessarily be tied to my level. My question is specifically for creating a brand new character with a level adjustment. Starting gold as listed on page 135 of the DMG states 9th level characters start with 36K and 10th start with 45K.

Does anyone know of any clarifications that have been presented on this?

You are right and you are treated as a ninth level character for everything but XP however your starting wealth isn't tied to your level.

If you make a new 10th level character you take your webtracking EV (49k I believe) and add your startting gold found in the Xen'drik Expedition Campaign Standards. This is the amount of money you my spend.
