So I'm building a warforged character. I would like to be able to increase its size category temporarily, but I obviously can't use the simple option of potions of Enlarge Person. (Dang issues of being a construct.) But I realized that the psionic power of Expansion could do what I wanted even though I am a construct.

From what I could figure out, my character could purchase a Psionic Tatoo of Expansion (from Expanded Psionics). Being able to buy this single non-standard item would cost me x1 expansion slot. But otherwise it would be completely legal.

Is this correct?

Im not up on psionic tatoo's and I dont have my book on me, but yeah, that sounds right. Only thing I'm not sure on is, can a non-psionic character take a psionic tatoo? If not, you'd have to take either a psionic class, Wild Talent feat, or Psiforged Body feat.

Basically, a psionic tattoo is the psionic version of an arcane/divine potion. Until you hear otherwise, assume that you can open it with an expansion slot and take it like any other magic item. The only question is the warforged part, because it does say "skin" in the description, but that is the "flavor text." Unless I find something saying they can't be drawn on warforged, tattoo yourself silly.

I like the visuals of a heavily tattooed warforged with psionic tattoos. Rather unique....I may have to steal this idea for my Dragon Shaman as he is heavily tattooed and some psionic tattoos might be useful....hmm...

Question, do you just have to unlock "Psionic Tattoo" once or do you have to unlock it once for each power you want as a tattoo?

As we are talking about psionic stuff i might add my question, what about power stones? do you have to unlock 1 for each power or unlock the item and can use stones from your power list?

Until you hear otherwise, it is treated like any other magic item: so the answer is once per power.

Until you hear otherwise, they are treated like any other magic item: so the answer is once per power. (I know this might seem overly restrictive, so it is something we can talk about. The points about smaller magic items discussed elsewhere are valid points.)

Now if you take the Imprint Stone feat, then you can create power stones without unlocking each stone, just like if you had the Scribe Scroll feat.

Dont see why warforged wouldnt be able to use it. Really isnt any different than the runes etched on a Spellcarved Soldier (well... except that these could actually be usefull).

Thanks for the responses.

But I'm going to have to pitty my BC judge at Origins. (Ah, the personal sacrifice of integrity for horror value.)

I knew there was a reason I should have looked at Psionics... I'm definitely going to have to look into this for my Juggernaut.

Ok I've had a good look at this.. and it seems to me that you can't get the tattoo unless you can craft it yourself because it doesn't appear as a specific item (oh how I hate this ridiculous reliance on random loot tables!)

Reading the description it does seem clear that it would work for a warforged though because it explcitly mentiones that it won't work on things without a proper surface such as incorpreals and elementals ..implying that it will work on constructs.

...a few levels of Psionic Warrior would go well on my warforged ..if I'd thought of it in time ;)

Usually the loot tables list items individually. Nowhere does it say level 1 arcane scroll 25 gp, or potion of level 1 spell 50 gp. It says divine scroll of cure light wound 25 gp, arcane scroll of cure light wound 50 gp, or potion of cure light wounds 50 gp. and so we are limited. However, Table 7-13 does list psionic tattoos by power level. I think this makes them legal, as well as much simpler. lol

I digress: I did not realize you could transfer tattoos. I think that's an interesting image, tattoos crawling down your arm onto another person.

..and even if you can get it.. it seems to only last for one round

If you had a psionic tatto of Inertial Armor, as a 1st level psion/wilder or psychic warrior power, the tattoo would be manifest at 1st level. So at 1 hr/level, that would be one hour. Claws of the vampire, a 3rd level psychic power, would be a bit different, you have to be 7th level psychic warrior to manifest a 3rd level power, so it would last for 7 rounds.

Unless I missed something, it is very similar to the way potions and scrolls work.

I was referring to the tattoo of Expansion.

I was referring to the tattoo of Expansion.

Expansion power has a duration of 1 min/level(D). So 1 minute (or 10 rounds). Cheaper than a potion of enlarge person.

I mainly like the flavor alot more. I'm not a big fan of the "warforged drinking potions" thing. I understand the game mechanics aspect of it, and agree that its necessary, but it lacks flavor to me. The psionic tattoo on the other hand:

The warforged touches a mystical symbol inscribed on its chest, as it concentrates, the symbol slowly begins to fade, while it fades you realize the warforged is growing larger! In a few seconds the symbol is gone and the warforged has doubled in size!

That I like. Especially if its called a rune of expansion or something similar. (still a psionic tattoo of expansion of course.)

Well yeah.. except for the bit where it says it's base duration is 1round/level and you have to boost it to get it up to 1min/level.

Ahh, there is an errata
Page 105–106: Expansion Power
The third option for augmenting the power should read
as follows:
3. If you spend 2 additional power points, this power’s
duration is 10 minutes per level rather than 1 round per
level.
While it still says the 1 round/level it gives the augment of 10 min/level for 2 additional power points.

The Spell description duration entry lists 1min/level(D), and I don't think the bit under augment changes that. To me the intent and RAW is 1 min/level(D).

I could see how a DM could rule that it is 1 round / level, that woiuld definitely be something to keep in mind if you choose the tattoo. Perhaps a quick question to the DM before you start (I would suggest having the errata printed out btw). Better to find out before you start than in the heat of battle.

I guess I can only say I would adjudicate it 1 min/level(D).
