| echoota07-31-07, 04:33 PM | Spoiler below... not that it matters as it's been retired... In Eyes of the Lich Queen Part 1 we got [something cool] as our story object and everyone in our group is confused with the part, "A member of a non-dragonmark race gains the [something cool], but must take the resist energy ability conveyed by that [coolness]" but there doesn't seem to be anything listed in the ECS talking about a resist energy ability under the [cool thing]. Our DM has ruled that it's a 1/day gain resistance 5 versus specified energy type for 1 minute, but if it is something else then it would be great to have it clarified. |

In Eyes of the Lich Queen Part 1 we got a (spoiler) as our story object and everyone in our group is confused with the part, "A member of a non-dragonmark race gains the (spoiler) feat, but must take the resist energy ability conveyed by that feat" but there doesn't seem to be anything listed about a resist energy ability under the (spoiler) feat. Our DM has ruled that it's a 1/day gain resistance 5 versus specified energy type for 1 minute, but if it is something else then it would be great to have it clarified. A few things. First the mod is retired for RPGA play but it is an adapted module so lots of other people will be playing it outside of RPGA. Therefore I took out the spoilers and I will answer your question vaguely but definitively. The story object does a poor job of explaining the ability, but the mod as written does an excellent job of explaining it. You are not the only one with this question, so here is the answer: This feat is unique to the module. There is no other way to gain resist energy in this feat except by playing EotLQ2 AND being a non-dragonmarked race. A dragonmarked race can't choose the resist energy ability. It is a bonus feat, and you do not need to meet the prerequisites. Instead of one of the standard abilities, you gain use of the spell resist energy once per day as a spell-like ability, with a caster level equal to one half of your character level (which is also HD for purposes of Xen'drik Expeditions). So basically it is resist energy 10 for whatever energy type you choose when you use it, for 10 minutes per 1/2 your HD. At level 14 the resistance goes up to 20. -Lou |
| Madfox1108-01-07, 03:54 AM | Which brings us to the next question that has been bugging our group: does the ability work as a prerequisite for the other aberrant dragonmark feats? |
| Harliquinn08-01-07, 08:42 AM | Which brings us to the next question that has been bugging our group: does the ability work as a prerequisite for the other aberrant dragonmark feats? I have been told that certain benefits, when received as a story object instead of taken as part of character development, cannot assumed to be permanent. It would qualify as a prerequisite for non-locked items, but if the benefit ever goes away, you would be unable to use the items for which it was a prerequisite. |

Mark of Xoriat, granting DR 5/byeshk, is a pretty sweet feat. |

Well given the information that was provided at the end of Part 1, I'm not sure characters will *want* to keep the benefits. Though I don't know how this will work if you don't play the final parts... |
| lseelba08-01-07, 05:29 PM | Which brings us to the next question that has been bugging our group: does the ability work as a prerequisite for the other aberrant dragonmark feats? It most definitely does. The module says this explicitly that it qualifies as a prerequisite. However, like Harliquinn pointed out, it might not be permanent so you might end up with a feat you can't use because you don't have the pre-req. You can risk it, plus there is retooling! -Lou |
| imperatrix08-01-07, 06:48 PM | I have been told that certain benefits, when received as a story object instead of taken as part of character development, cannot assumed to be permanent. Ah...sadly, I, too, have it on high authority that one should not assume story objects to be permanent. I specifically asked after this one, too, as on first blush it seemed to play precisely into my my dear little Cabal character's background and character development. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. :raincloud It would qualify as a prerequisite for non-locked items, but if the benefit ever goes away, you would be unable to use the items for which it was a prerequisite. Now, this I was not aware of. Players in my group were under the impression that should we choose a feat/spell/whatever based on any previously gained story object and the object then be lost, we'd be allowed to simply choose another feat/spell/whatever in its place. Though from what you posted, Harliquinn, that doesn't seem to be the case. Bummer. |

Though from what you posted, Harliquinn, that doesn't seem to be the case. Bummer. Well you can always retool your character at the next level bump. However, unless they allow retooling of expansion slots, it's likely that you would have used one or more of those in order to unlock the feat for which this story object was a prerequisite. |
| Madfox1108-02-07, 04:48 AM | The players in our group are well aware it might go away, but you can always retool stuff at the level bumb. Mind you, my character has got more than enough other feats that he wants than to deal with that demonic thing (cleric of the Silver Flame). |
| Garden_State_Gamer08-03-07, 04:39 PM | Spoiler if you didn't play part 2. Let's not forget the fact that Jheamast's fellow adventurers all suffered horrible untimely deaths relating to the marks. The real question is do you really want to keep the story object? As for the current ability to have the feat, I know someone who is playing a daelkyr half-blood that is making strong moves towards the mark of xoriat because of the feat. If you want to have a gross DR to an obscure metal, might I recommend the fey related feats for the Warlock found in the complete mage? You get DR/Cold Iron and it increases with every future warlock fey feat you get. |

| Diablo0508-06-07, 08:43 PM | Which would be a shame, really. Mark of Xoriat, granting DR 5/byeshk, is a pretty sweet feat. Problem with Mark of Xoriat is that it has Mark of Madness as a pre-requisite. Mark of Madness being darn near worthless. So, is it worth spending 2 feats to get DR 5/byeshk? *shrug* Maybe... but I've been leaning towards no But lets not forget... there is still Lesser and Greater Aberrant Dragonmark out there |

Look at warforged, who'd have to invest at least 3-4 feats to achieve this kind of damage reduction. DR 5/byeshk will practically never be overcome by your opponents and it will increase your combat durability a lot. And while Mark of Madness might not be great, lesser confusion as a swift action 3/day is still better than nothing. |
| Timlagor08-07-07, 12:00 PM | Mark of Madness sounds pretty handy from that.. but I suppose the DC is going to be pretty low on a front-liner. |
| Garden_State_Gamer08-07-07, 05:16 PM | Not to mention that Warforged get DR/Adamantine, which is a mid-high level standard of metal choice, at least in my group. Lesser Confusion: It's called "Lesser" for a reason ;). But a lot of the least/lesser abilities can be weenie, I pick for flavor as much as utility. |
