| bertman410-23-07, 02:49 PM | I have a question. I know this has been discussed before, and I think I know the answer, but I couldn't find it with a quick search. If you unlock a feat for your PC (using two expansion slots), does it become unlocked for ALL levels? Does thsi mean you can take the feat at an earlier level retroactively during a retool? For example, let's say I have a straight up Warforged Fighter PC. I use the 1st and 2nd level expansoin slots to unlock Warforged Fighter Racial Substituion levels. I then unlock Silver Tracery feat from Races of Eberron using my 3rd and 4th level expansion slots. When I hit 7th level and retool the PC, can I take Silver Tracery at 2nd level as my 2nd level Warforged Fighter Racial Substition level feat even though the unlock didn't happen until 3rd level? Thanks for your help, Bertman |

I thought that once something was unlocked, it was free to take at any of your levels. The only thing the expansion list has in common with your effective character level is the number; you have the same number of slots in your item list as you have levels. |

The only thing the expansion list has in common with your effective character level is the number; you have the same number of slots in your item list as you have levels. By the very nature of expansion slot use, you have to unlock something before you can use it. Therefore, it is only available at the earliest at the level you unlock it. You don't have to take it then but you can't possibly take it 'earlier' than you unlocked it, since it was still locked at that level. This passage is in the CS: "You don't have to be able to take or buy an item when you put it on your expansion list. You can put it on the list to have it at later levels of advancement." The only issue comes in during retooling. Expansion slots (other than 1st level) can be retooled. However, you don't need to retool. One thing to keep in mind though is that when retooling, you still must have a legal Xen'drik character at every level. So when retooling at 7th, you don't just build a 7th level character that is legal at 7th, it had to have been legal at 1st through 6th. This means, among other things, that you can only take items that were unlocked at the level you were at the time. So even if you unlock a feat with your 7th/8th level slots, you cannot take that feat at 1st level when you retool since it wasn't unlocked until 7th level. If this weren't the case, you could then unlock several '1st level' only feats and other rules items with higher level slots then retool and take them at 1st level (not the intention). This would also get around many of the psion limitations that are present with feats. Harliquinn |
