Is there any chance of the fastplay characters being posted by this weekend? [Archive] - Wizards Community

The first Xen'drik Adventures event I've organized is taking place this weekend. Given the makeup of the gamestore, I know there will be a lot of new players who will require characters made up for them. If the fastplay characters aren't available I expect that there will be a major problem with the event. Either players will be creating characters well into the event, or players will drop out for a lack of characters.

Is there any chance of these characters (the ones that are supposed to be posted "before GenCon") being posted soon?

No.
Yeah, I figured that (in fact, I'm not holding my breath with the currently poor status of the RPGA leadership). Fortunately, one of the PTB sent me the list of them for use. Very important since 1/3 of the players used them.

So the question becomes WHEN will they be posted? My local gaming club's gameday is September 9 and we are lauching our Xen'drik Expedition with the Crimson Codex faction adventure 1. We sure could use the fast plays.

Could one of the faction masters post a few (say 4 varied) here on the forums from those used at gencon? They should have access to them, and it would help out until it posted on the main site.

I will make myself personally accountable for this. We submitted them before Gencon, and again almost 8 days ago. I'm not sure why they're not posted (though the web guys do work their rears off--there might be some vacation/post gencon holiday time here. The web guys are typically awesome, so there has to be something wrong here). It's out of my hands, as to what and when they choose to muddle with them.

I will, however, put this back in my hands because I think it's very important. I can't hack the WoTC site and get them on the web, but I will find out what the hold up is, and where we sit in line for take off. Expect to hear back from me late tomorrow evening on this. If not, I may be sending out some HUGE attachments via email. :P

Thanks Kiddoc! I like it that you seem to take people's concerns seriously and try to find a solution to the problem... ;)

I'm trying. I have an email and a couple of phone messages out about this one. I'll do more calling after I see my last patient tonight. We'll get these up as soon as possible--or find another way to get them out. Hang in there, I'm on it. :D

A very simple work work around to this problem is for the FactionMasters to each Create a Yahoo Group for each faction. Upload the Campaing docs and the Pre-gens into the files sections and then post the Yahoo Group Address here and have a WizO Sticy the post so people could find it.

Clean and simple.

Unless the Factionmasters were specifically told not to do that, and to handle all files transmission through the website. Then it is not as nice and simple as everyone imagines.

I hope players believe us when we tell them that we do understand what the players want, and we are doing everything in our powers to get the campaign going and to get questions answered. I hope the players believe us when we say that there are things that we want to do, but just cannot for one reason or another.

Could you eloaborate on that???
(ie: what are the things that you want to do but cannot.)

I do believe that you and the other faction masters want to serve the players. But IMHO RPGA HQ has tied your hands behind your backs and stuck your feet in a bucket of cement.
The box is currently broken. You can not fix the box, so it's time to start looking outside of the box for ways to solve this.

Read between the lines, I'd suggest. "I hope players believe us when we tell them that we do understand what the players want, and we are doing everything in our powers to get the campaign going and to get questions answered." With the "we" meaning the faction masters.

I don't think it's RPGA HQ directly. After all, at this point it consists of one person, IIRC.

Look at the reason why the RPGA doesn't have enough resources to support it's projects. It seems they are an afterthought of WotC. They can't even be allocated enough resources to keep the organization running smoothly (which it wasn't even doing before one of the two employees left).

Ok

Just my two coppers.

I do understand that RPGA HQ = Ian at this time, and that Ian is probably swamped with much work and problems. This is why I suggested my idea in the first place. Thinking that this would take some pressure and heat off of him and provide a temporary solotion to the bigger problmes.

Except, the people above Ian have an interest in making sure that information only comes through official sources. In fact, it's not particularly fair to those that can't find the unofficial sources. They can't use them, but others can because they know the backdoors to the system.

The best solution is for things to get in gear and have the fastplay characters put up on the website. Unfortunately, it seems that isn't something that is very pressing to the PtB.

And let us all also remember, that all of this is WotC intellectual property, and that however, whenever, and wherever they want to release it is their business (in more ways than one).

Now having said that, I really don't think that any of the delays are deliberate, or even just an "afterthought". I think (hope) that the top priority for the RPGA staff right now is the database issue which has two entire campaigns on hold. If that gets fixed, then the other stuff will follow quickly. If that does not get fixed, then the other stuff really does not matter, as the campaigns will be dead in the water with no way to track them.

I know that personally I will be running at least four weekends of Xen'drik expeditions in the next two months, and I would hate to see those players lose out on the play experience because they can't track the characters. So I can work around the other issues until this one gets solved.

My understanding of the database problem is that the system blows up when they are trying to enter massive amounts of tables (i.e. Origins and GenCon). People have posted on these forums that entering one or a few tables of MoH or Xen'drik are not a problem. If my understanding of this is correct then why don't they create a whole bunch of "mini conventions" and enter the table one at a time?

Probably because gencon (and formerly Origins) are Special with a capital S to the RPGA. Changing how they're entered might affect, among other things, the 2x rewards points that members earn.

Origins does not get the 2x reward points this year since it was not coordinated by RPGA HQ, so they should at least get Origins entered if not GenCon.

Thank Jeff, he worked his behind off this weekend to get them up. And the factionmasters called his house every 10 minutes over the last 72 hours:

"They done yet..."

"How about now..."

"Hey Jeff, it's Brian, what's up with those fastplays?"

"...about those fastplays..."

As a fair sport, I'm paying for our RPGA webdwarf to have his phone number changed now :P

Thanks!

Interesting that the Blackwheel Company gets 4 unique characters, the other factions only 2. Not that I have a problem with that as I find that the most interesting faction.

Any idea if we'll see these updated each level bump? The big problem with the MoH level bumps was we lost all the additional fastplay characters (and even had one set listed as being playable, despite not having been updated to the appropriate level).

Figures there'd be a problem with them (there's So many though, and I've only noticed one with a glaring problem on a cursory glance)

The Gnoll has no skill points, All characters get a minimum of 4 skill points at first and 1 at each otehr level even if they have an intellegence penalty(PHB 62). He also has no Languages (Not Even Gnoll!!)

I'm gonna look at them all again later more thouroughly, but hopefully that's the only problem :-)

I don't know who made em but they are riddled with mistakes. The post above me discusses the Gnoll and it seems like every other one has at least 3-4 mistakes. If it is of any use if the campaign organizers need someone to make some correct fastplays let me know; or if you need someone to correct the current ones so that they match the 3.5 character creation guidlines.

I made them. ;)

Some obvious goofs appeared in the conversion from us to the web. Likely that some of them are oversights--sometimes that happens when you're trying to turn out 20 adventures before Gencon along with 15 or so fastplays. We'll get them worked out. The good news is, they're all up. They're all in very usable form.

In fact, if you want to post a list, maybe you can work out some angst/energy and help us out all at the same time. :D

We'll get them cleaned up to perfection as we roll along.

already started that list, finding a lot of little errors (only that gnoll one struck out at me because the skill column looked so naked)
We know (now ;-) ) that you folks are only human
But I agree that putting them in a list makes these errors eaiser to find and correct :-)

Looking over the list of fastplays, what strikes me is the fact that there is no arcane caster or cleric in the "Any Faction" list of characters. Does this mean that you can't play a fastplay cleric in any other faction but Covenant of Light? That you can't play a wizard in any but Crimson Codex, or a sorcerer in any but Cabal of Shadows?

I don't see anything on the cleric that should prevent its use in other factions. Likewise with the wizard. The evil alignment on the drow sorcerer would obviously prevent playing it in any other faction than Cabal of shadows.

The "any faction" characters seem heavy with fighter types. Just an observation. ;)

I think we all need to thank Kiddoc and the webdwarf for getting them up. I can't imagine how much work you all are putting into the launch, and there must be a lot of other, more personally interesting work to focus on. We, the players who might use fastplays, thank you for making it possible as quickly as you did, and with so much variety.
Obviously, being very invested in the new campaign, we all focus on the little glitches that are just part of such a big undertaking. Never doubt our gratitude for the hard work, or our excitement about putting these characters to the test.

Actually, we all worked hard on them--it's just my job to take the blame. It's Shawn's job to take the credit. We have a strong belief in divsion of labor. :D

I know I speak for all the factionmasters when we say that we're not always satisfied with the little glitches that pop up. We change what we can change, and we do our best to provide you guys with some kick ***** material to play.

We'll nix those little glitches and fine tune the material as we go. Big priorities have to stay well... BIG. ;) We have a ton of incredible stuff in store for your guys--and lest you never forget, your enjoyment and entertainment is our business. We have, all of us, a vested interest in keeping you as busy and as reasonably happy as we can.

It should be very quickly corrected. Until then, the characters are perfectly usable as long as the needed adjustments are made. In almost every case, it's just a math mistake (which comes from the generator form we were using... empahsis on the were).

Take care,
