I want to play a Kalashtar soulknife, using the racial substitution levels granted from Races of Eberron. As I understand it, I'd have to have a campaign card (which I don't have), or burn an expansion slot to take the non-psionic version of the Kalastar. 2. If I took the racial substitution level of any Kalashtar, I'd have to do it at 1st level, thereby burning two more expansion slots (and later wait to get the campaign card). 3. However, I can't be a Kalastar Soulknife at 1st level, unless I have the campaign card, and even still, burn at least two slots (for racial substitution levels at least- if I have the card to let me be a psionic Kalastar, I can save a slot). Is this correct?

Is this correct? 1. Since a soulknife is a psionic class, you need the card or you make it quite dificult on yourself. You unlock nothing psionic if you are a "regular" kalashtar. 2. Expanions slots are not the same as card slots. (See the bold text on page 12). If you use the card as your first level card, you can use your expansions slots for racial sub. levels. 3. Racial Sub levels must be unlocked at first level, and then must be in the class you take at 1st-level. If you don't have the card, you can't start as a soulknife without unlocking it with an expansion slot 1st-level, which means you can't unlock the racial Sub. levels. If you use one of your campaign card slots with the psionic kalashtar card, then you have soulknife unlocked by the card, and can use your 1st-level expansion slot (and one more) unlocked the sub. levels.
