| Shadai05-31-07, 02:44 PM | Hi all. I'm going to be attending Gen Con 07 and signed up for some RPGA events. I think I was in RPGA many, many years ago but its been so long I very seriously doubt they could find my information if I was. So I'm starting new, with years of D&D experience. Anyway, lately I have been creating my four characters for the various adventures I'm going to be having while enjoying Gen Con and I've come across some questions. For the most part, the Campaign Standards v 2.0 does a fair job of explaining whats going on and things I need to do. However, its not perfect. So if some of you know the answer to the following, I would really appreciate the help. Hopefully these are not addressed somewhere else. I did spend some time looking on the forums for answers and could not. I hate to bother people with the same questions. Anyway, on to the Questions: 1. On the front page of the Eberron Expeditions webpage on the RPGA site is states a level kick to 4th and 5000gp Base Equip Value. I cannot find any mention of this Base Equip Value in the Campaign Standards 2.0. Does this mean starting level 4 characters get 5000gp to equip characters? If so, does that include things like starting gp for classes and additive bonuses (such as Blackwheel Company or ranks in various profession/craft skills) or are these bonuses added to the stock 5000gp? IE, my 4th level warforged fighter is a member of Blackwheel Company. Does he start with 5000gp or 5510gp (thats 5000 base + 70 Craft + 200 Blackwheel Bonus + 240 Starting fighter gp as indicated by the Campaign Standards)? 2. Kind of an offshoot question to 1, but the current level kick says level 4 characters. Like I stated earlier, I am creating characters for the Gen Con 07 RPGA events. However, all the descriptions of those events state the adventure is optimized for level 7 characters. Is there going to be another level kick prior to Gen Con 07 or are new players like me stuck with fastplay or lower, level 4 characters? 3. I'm thinking of playing a Beguiler class for my Cabal of Shadow character. As you know, the class is found in the Players Handbook II (PhBII). According to the class description, there are several spells on the Beguiler spell list that come from that source (PhBII). Do I still gain access to those spells without having to take them on my expansion list (thus "unlocking" them)? 4. This might take some explaining. But I am having a real hard time understand just what racial substitution levels are. The paragraph in the Campaign Standards 2.0 does a woeful job in explaining it. Even the example is horribly unclear. I think its trying to tell me I can substitute a race's favored class ability for its current one (as weird as that sounds to me, but again, the explaination is dismal). The example the document uses is of a Elven Wizard which IS the favored class. So its very confusing to me. Could anyone explain what this is and what it does? 5. Is there any way to get into the RPGA so I can register/report online prior to Gen Con? Or is this even important? I'm already going in unloaded due to the fact I won't have any campaign cards (no psionics, grumble grumble grumble). There aren't many (if any) ebberon RPGA event near where I live so signing up for a session to get my RPGA membership is proving impossible. And seriously, why DON'T they let you just sign up for a membership online? Sheesh. 6. I've signed up for 5 of the RPGA Xen'drick events at Gen Con 07. Is each "adventure" considered an event (because Gen Con by definition is an event). Or are they all together considered an event? My concern is if there is not going to be a level kick prior to Gen Con and I'm playing a 4th level, what if by the 2nd day I've gotten enough experience to advance a level? Do I level normally or must I wait for the event (ie all of gen con) to end before I can? 7. And on a slightly similar line of thinking from 6, character death. I'm assuming if I create a character I will have the minimum exp to be that level. If I die just once and take an exp penalty, does that mean I must immediately drop a level if I go under that minimum? Or is there an "exp cushion" of sorts (like being halfway to the next level)? Sorry for the long winded questions. Hope I can get some answers. Thank you for your time and hope to see you all soon! Safe travels! Shadai |

You get to add your character's starting gold, crafting gold, blackwheel bonus, etc. to that EV number. There will be a level kick just prior to GenCon. It will be announced on the RPGA site. You gain access to rules items such as spells from the book that the original source of the class. So yes, you can have access to Beguiler spells from PHB II without unlocking them. If Beguiler spells appear in an upcoming sourcebook that is released, you would have to unlock those. 4. This might take some explaining. But I am having a real hard time understand just what racial substitution levels are. The paragraph in the Campaign Standards 2.0 does a woeful job in explaining it. Even the example is horribly unclear. The example the document uses is of a Elven Wizard which IS the favored class. So its very confusing to me. Could anyone explain what this is and what it does? Racial substitution levels are different than the issue you are talking about. Racial substitution levels are special rules published in various books that let you trade out certain abilities gained at certain class levels with other abilities more suited to a particular race. I think what you are talking about is favored classes, and the restrictions the campaign puts on multiclassing. Is that what you are talking about? Sheesh. Because when they did allow online signups, they were getting hundreds of people signing up each week, and then those people ended up never playing an RPGA event. And the numbers were growing too fast. The event is all of GenCon Indy. So you will not level at GenCon Indy. You will be 7th level through all 5 adventures (which we call "sessions" in the XE Campaign Standards, I think). You cannot go lower than the level bump. Just as you cannot level up during an event, neither can you level down. The XP penalties for dying are listed in the XECS under character death. No worries about the questions. That's why we are here. Shawn Crimson Codex Guy |
| Shadai05-31-07, 03:52 PM | Thank you for the answers. So very helpful. Still need a bit of clarification on the following: Racial substitution levels are different than the issue you are talking about. Racial substitution levels are special rules published in various books that let you trade out certain abilities gained at certain class levels with other abilities more suited to a particular race. I think what you are talking about is favored classes, and the restrictions the campaign puts on multiclassing. Is that what you are talking about? Not exactly. I'm wondering what Racial Substitution is. I think you started to hit on it but I'm still partially confused. I take it that is the racial equivilant of the alternate class features presented in the Players Handbook II. However I have never seen these rules. What book were they in? That could go a long way in understanding what exactly it does. Because when they did allow online signups, they were getting hundreds of people signing up each week, and then those people ended up never playing an RPGA event. And the numbers were growing too fast. I get that, and not trying to be rude but the original question was still not answered. Is there a way to get in prior? And is it really going to effect me by not having access to campaign cards like everyone else may or may not have? |
| Shadowed Intent05-31-07, 07:31 PM | Not exactly. Racial substitution levels are levels in a class that are tailored for a specific race and replace the standard class levels. There is an excerpt (click me) (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060106a&page=3) from Races of the Dragon which list some examples from Races of the Dragon. Usually, you can take as few or as many of these racial substitution levels as you wish. In XE, you have to pay the three expansion slot cost at first level (your first three slots) if you ever want to take a racial substitution level, at first and/or subsequent levels. I get that, and not trying to be rude but the original question was still not answered. Is there a way to get in prior? And is it really going to effect me by not having access to campaign cards like everyone else may or may not have? Having campaign cards can be very useful, however, you will still have action points you can use. I don't think you are affected by not having them, I think it is more accurate to say it affects you if you have them since they are nifty additional ways to use your action points (and yes, they allow you to have a higher max of action points). People sell them on ebay, and some people trade them (click me) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=829725). If you were interested in playing a character with psionics, you might try to find the card People of Mind, Matter, and Radiance (click me) (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebmoh/20050414a) you could use it to create a psionic kalashtar (it costs three campaign card stack slots (not expansion slots) to use the Mark of Heroes creation card in XE). There is also A 'Forged Apart(click me) (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebmoh/20060206a) for a psionic warforged (again the three stack slot cost). And a link to a thread titled How to REALLY get a RPGA number (click me) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=629833) |
| smerwin2905-31-07, 08:11 PM | Basically, Shadowed covered it all. I'm most familiar with the racial substitution levels from Races of the Dragon and Races of Eberron, but I'm sure there are more. I've just got my face stuck in a different set of books right now. :plotting: Sorry I forgot to actually answer that one question. Right now you can only sign up for the RPGA by using a membership form. You can usually only get them by playing in an event, but sometimes a helpful soul will mail you one or fill one out for you and mail it. Cards are nice but certainly not required. Some RPGA members who don't play Xen'drik Expeditions might give you some in exchange for a candy bar. In fact, if you play a Crimson Codex adventure at GenCon, come find me and I will give you some cards. You'll know me as I am the good-looking Factionmaster . . . Shawn Crimson Codex Guy |

| Soltares06-01-07, 01:24 AM | Awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time out to answer my questions. Hope to see you two at Gen Con :D And thanks to you for asking these questions! I had based my characters off of 5000 gp starting (+200 for the Blackwheel ones), so your questions just added base class wealth and Craft/Profession gold to my cash flow! Yikes, now I've got like ten characters to re-calculate. Good thing I love making characters! |

I don't think you are affected by not having them, You do get less action points without cards, however. I always bring all my Cards to my tables so people can borrow them for the game. |

I should have mentioned that there is a very good chance you can borrow cards at the table for use during a session. As a DM, I would bring my card library in case players wanted to borrow some. | lseelba06-02-07, 04:10 AM | Hi all. I'm going to be attending Gen Con 07 and signed up for some RPGA events. I think I was in RPGA many, many years ago but its been so long I very seriously doubt they could find my information if I was. So I'm starting new, with years of D&D experience. (SNIP) From my experience, the RPGA keeps a very good database of their members. It wouldn't hurt to send an email to RPGA HQ and ask them if they can find your number. If you ever had a number, they are likely to find it. (Also you will look cool for having such a low number :D ) Follow this link: http://wizards.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wizards.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=170 |
| Shadai06-02-07, 09:17 AM | Well thanks. I submitted my information, here's hoping they find it. Perhaps someone should toss the guys who write the campaign standards these questions so when they come up with the new standards prior to Gen Con they can clarify those so no one has those questions again. I mean... I like to think of myself as pretty intelligent and well read (I've DM'd for years, after all), but if I couldn't figure it out I'm sure that there are some others who are having the same problem :D |
