| GaiasDream09-22-06, 12:54 PM | I hope this makes sense... We have a great bunch of local gamers, several of whom went to GenCon and played in Well of Woe and XE factional adventures. Further, one of our DMs (Peter) has already run the group through his own custom-made DM's Mark 1 adventure. I (Nick) was one of the players (as Klawgrinn, gnoll druid) in his DM's Mark 1. The game was great! I'd like to play in a version of DM's Mark 2 run by Peter or another DM in our group. Also, I am intending to run my own DM's Mark 2... a *different* adventure, designed by me, that Peter could take part in. Obviously we are doing this to avoid "spoilers" or other ethical issues that would inevitably arise from playing as a PC in a module designed by oneself. So here's the question: Can I run (as DM) my own custom DM's Mark 2 adventure, and play in (as PC) a different, separate and unrelated DM's Mark 2 adventure... receiving credit for one as a DM and the other as a player. Or, am I restricted from getting credit for my BWC PC (Klawgrinn) for *anyone's* DM's Mark 2 adventure because I have chosen to run my own? If so, that's fair... I just need to know one way or the other. I'm asking this because I don't want to get in trouble for fraud or rulebreaking as a new RPGA member, and our group wants to get in as many sessions as we can without breaking any rules. I couldn't find the answer to this in any of the FAQs so I'm putting it up for discussion here. Thanks in advance to the Factionmasters or any other RPGA authorities who can give a definite answer on this. Kind regards, Nick RPGA Herald DM 8/18/06 Klawgrinn Yakl, Gnoll Druid of Droaam Dragoon of the Blackwheel Company Pilgrim's Crest Receipient |

Your answer, though, makes me shudder a bit... is the issue that we don't KNOW what the database will do, or that we do know and it isn't pretty? As I said, my concern here is that I don't want to get penalized because the database thinks I'm playing in a module that I'd previously run. Clarification would be great at whatever point it becomes available. I realize you guys are frustrated too and working on getting all these issues resolved. Best, Nick |
| Skerrit09-23-06, 10:18 AM | That is how the database should work, but it hasn't always done what it was suppose to. So basically the answer is, until the database is 100% fixed, we don't actually know what will happen. Now, that aside, I don't think I have seen not let you both play and run a DM's Mark. I think that issue was actually cleared up with MOH. |

The only help I can offer is that it did work this way for Mark of Heroes. edit: I was typing as Greg answered! The database was set up to allow you to run and play the DMs marks without penalty. As I have not had the opportunity to play in any DMs marks (sometimes it sucks being the guy who runs everything around here... but not much!) I can't say that the database is correct for Xen'drik. But it should be, if it was originally constructed along the Mark of Heroes guidlines. Not much help, but it's what I have.:P |

Thanks for the clarification, guys. As for you personally being the guy who always runs everything... if you are coming to DC for Winter Fantasy, I am going to sign up to run stuff there as well as play. So you will be welcome at my table! I had a great time playing Principal of the Matter and Price of Progress at your table at GenCon - the least I can do is return the favor. :) Best, Nick |
| jeffpicard09-24-06, 02:55 PM | note though that for MoH and presumably here that each player can only play once still even for a DM's mark so while you SHOULD be able to both run and play, you'll need more folks that haven't played to get a legal table |
| DBlizzard09-24-06, 03:39 PM | I think that issue was actually cleared up with MOH. Really? I hadn't heard that. Last I heard they never fixed the database issue and you couldn't play in a particular DMs Mark adventure after you ran it. Has anyone successfully been able to play in one after they ran it for Mark of Heroes (or Xen'drik)? |
| quizboy09-27-06, 11:26 AM | I've been able to play and run MoH DM's marks before in the past, but I was shown a "trick" on how to do it. Another DM and I who want to play in the DM Marks check out the DM Mark as normal (for two sessions). then I play in the one that they run and they run in the one I run. Then we report them at the same time. I don't think we've tried to report it any other way, but that way definately works. It also means you have to have two tables ready for a DM's Mark for everyone to get credit. If we don't have two full tables, we've been taking turns eating the DM marks. I have no idea (obviously) how the Xen'drik database works, but that's how Mark of Heroes has worked. I hope that helps. -Q |
| Marcia_S10-04-06, 11:54 AM | With 4 factions, we've actually found it easier to each have one faction that we'll "eat". We still get to play in 3 factions and no one ever has to run something that they really wanted to play in. This should also help with the DM's Mark situation. Since I'll never play the faction that I've written and run the DM's Mark for, it doesn't matter whether or not the database would allow me to play it later. This, of course, depends on your having a relatively large group with 4 GMs willing to write DM's Marks. Marcia |

We've got a DM for each group, which is also fun because we get to experience different DM'ing styles for each faction, giving them each a distinct, unique feel. But yeah, every member of our group can DM, and is herald level GM in RPGA. I'd imagine that is slightly out of the norm. |
