I ask because I've created a Crimson Codex & a Cabal of Shadows character, but hadn't really planned on making one for Blackwheel or the Light. MikeC |

MikeC You would be assuming incorrectly. You may only play faction mods and DMs Marks of a particular faction with characters of those factions (Meaning you need 4 PCs if you want to play everything). If you think about it, why would a secret society ask someone from an opposing organization to go on a mission for them. However, you can play the special events and the Expedition (cores) with PCs of any faction. |
| Mike Czaplinski07-06-06, 10:09 PM | Shawn Merwin answered the question as well on the Eberron Yahoogroup. But, I appreciate it. Oh well. I wish I'd realized that on Tuesday, when I had time to make 2 more characters. Still: I have time until Dexcon..... I think I'll go simple on the other two, though maybe I'll make a Warforged scout for Blackwheel (I wouldn't even have to use a card to do it). MikeC |

MikeC Ooh, I'm thinking on going to Dexcon, too, but the events really don't look well attended on warhorn. Do you think people will materialize? Also, IMHO the Wargforged Scout is a garbage race. +2 Dex, -2 STR, -2 WIS, -2 CHA? If they got the con bonus that normal warforged get i'd like it. Still, if you really want to play a small character, (or really need Rogue to be a favored class) i guess it fits the bill. |
| Mike Czaplinski07-07-06, 12:11 PM | Ooh, I'm thinking on going to Dexcon, too, but the events really don't look well attended on warhorn. Do you think people will materialize? Vinniecons (nicknamed so for the proprietor, Vinnie Salzillo) are usually pretty well attended of late: the physical location of the hotel (literally right at Exit 9 from the NJ Turnpike; you can see it from the road for miles away), and I know that the local gaming group (The Green Knights) is running the RPGA track (The Senior GM is the wife of one of my oldest, dearest friends). Dexcon often gets a fair amount of walk-ins, so the actual attendance may be 25% to 33% over the Warhorn numbers (I know I'm not signed up yet, but I've yet to have a problem finding a slot). I was thinking of it mostly because I have the card, and frankly for all their faults I like the concept of them. But, I ended up making a Shifter Ranger for the Covenant of Light, and re-using the 1st level build of my MoH character (a hobgoblin bard) for my Blackwheel entry. Granted, the bard has NO AP's at 1st level (between the 3 AP's for the City Goblin card, and burning the last AP for the Expansion Card "At Home Among The Towers"), but I think he'll be survivable without them; I haven't played MoH or Eberron enough to be AP savvy, and I think in all the mods I've played, I've only used them a handful of times since I usually forget I have them. Though I'm trying not to get too hyped up, given the vast disappointment that MoH has become, I'm really looking foward to playing the XE previews at Dexcon. Hopefully, I'll see some of you there. | MattTjarks07-07-06, 12:49 PM | Shouldn't that Hobgoblin get one more AP? Since he is considered 2nd level, you should be looking at the 2nd-3rd level Row on Table CS-7, meaning your Starting APs are 4 and your maximum is 5. So, 3 for the creation card, 1 for the expansion card, and then you use another card to fill in the fifth AP. At least thats the way I understand it should work. Otherwise in future levels, a character with a Level Adjustment would have lower AP. If the human is 6th level, and you are 5th (+1 for Hobgoblin for an effective level of 6th), you should have the same number of action points. |

And to re-read the MoH original, it looks like I knew that back when I first made him. I told you I didn't play MoH very much.....;-) So I have at least 1 AP. I can work with that. The LA is a bit of a downer in the longer term, but I do like the extra oomph that it gives you starting out (the MoH version of Mogaan was able to get to Bard 2/Master Inquisitive 1 with the first level bump, because the 1 'level' of being a Hobgoblin is favored, and as such counted toward the 'must take 3 levels combined between the race's favored class and 1 other base class' restriction on multi-classing, and fortunately MI is really easy to qualify for early from Bard). But, a word to anyone playing an Level Adjusted character: always make sure to check your work. After all, you don't get something for nothing, and even accidental cheating is no fun for anyone involved. MikeC MikeC |
| Lightblade07-07-06, 02:04 PM | Any reason you're starting with "At Home among the Towers?" It's a good card to put in your stack later, but at 1st level when you can't actually purchase unlocked magic items, i'd rather take the action point. The only reason i'd have it is to take one of the unlocked feats at first level. As for action points, you can always use one to stabalize. Also, i belive you can use one (or two?) to get an extra daily use of bard song. You'll have to check me on that; it's in the ECS where they explain uses of action points. I'm fairly sure you can burn 2 AP to get an extra rage in... |

The only reason i'd have it is to take one of the unlocked feats at first level. Laziness...... When I built the MoH version of him, I applied AHATH at first level mostly because of the +2 bonuses for Knowledge: Local, Sharn, and for character concept fidelity (I always pictured him as knowing the city like the back of his hand, rather like a native New Yorker prides himself on knowing exactly how to get all sorts of places in Brooklyn without a map). And I'm glad I did: at least 2 of the feats on the card are ones that I almost added to his Expansion List before I realized I already had access to them, so ultimately its an investment that I think is better made at the beginning, rather than later. It's 1 AP to get an extra Bard song; one of the few times I used AP's in MoH was to get an extra bard song to use against some harpys. MikeC, I'll get the hang of these new fangled rules yet.... |

You may only play faction mods and DMs Marks of a particular faction with characters of those factions Just getting back to the original question for a moment ... Does this mean that if I was to run XenEx as a home campaign I'll have to have all my players agree on a single faction in order to get it to work at all? I know home-play isn't the first priority for 'DnD Campaigns' but it was looking mighty tempting. (Although only somewhat less so with this restriction, honestly) |
| Herrbard07-08-06, 11:43 PM | Well, yes. You have to have all characters as members of the same faction to participate in the faction mods and DMs marks. The core adventures (currently only Well of Woe, but I'm sure there are more to come!) can be played by characters of mixed factions. This means you have some choices: A) Choose one faction that your group wants to play and concentrate on those adventures. B) Have multiple factions, possibly with multiple DMs. This gives others opportunities to play and run mods, and have a different character for each faction. (You could, for instance, have a different DM for each faction, so that only one person has to "eat" each factions' mods.) This also gives you the most play opportunities, depending on how often your group meets. My home group is currently planning on doing Cabal of Shadows, just so they can be evil in an RPGA campaign. This could be difficult, since I don't know if I remember how to run the good guys! :D I'm trying to talk someone else into running the Crimson Codex mods, so I can play, too. |
