| Fiery_Fighter_Drake04-08-08, 11:59 AM | My DM is ruling that you must unlock the PrC a level earlier then you could take it. Example: My Valenar Elf Ranger wants to become a Revenant Blade. I have to unlock the Revenant Blade PrC at level 4 before I can take the level in 5. His logic is that since you gain an expansion slot when you level up, I cannot level up in a PrC because the expansion slot is only available AFTER I level up in a class. The Campaign Standards don't state anything about this and so I'm accepting his ruling, but I would like to hear something official, as it's forcing me to use slots that could be put to good use else where... |

This would mean you can pick the class AND unlock it at the same time. B) Follow the order of steps for creation each time you level. In this case you choose your expansion slot (step 3) before choosing you class for that level (Step 5). This is supported by the fact that at level one you can select a non-standard base class (like my favorite, the Factotum) because you've already unlocked it at level 1. In either case, I'd disagree with your GM. |
| Fiery_Fighter_Drake04-08-08, 12:33 PM | I tried Plan B before, but he said you're allowed to do only at 1st level... I seriously need something official here, cause my DM is pretty hard-headed and heavy-handed when it comes to rulings, so unless it's in black and white, it's a no-go... |

Turn it around on him and make him show you where it says you have to unlock the level before. ;) I'm sure one of the FactionMasters (likely Greg) will be along to clarify shortly. |
| Skerrit04-08-08, 05:02 PM | The intent of the expansion rule is not clearly stated but can be extrapolated from the examples. The intention is that the very first thing you when you level is fill in your expansion slot choice. This means you could unlock something and then use it the very same level. WolfStar76's example of choosing a nonstandard class at first level and playing it right away is correct. In this case we allow you to have your prestige class and eat it too, and your DM has incorrectly interrupted the campaign rule. |
