Reporting Issues still happening [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've got a concern that I'd like to voice to the Factionmasters and the RPGA coordinators. I'm very concerned about the online character tracking, and I believe I have good reason.

I played five Eberron slots at GenCon Indy last year, and we all know how messed up the reporting was for that. I tried to be patient, and preach patience to people (newcomers) I judged locally as well. It took quite a while for that to get fixed, but mine stuff did. Others who were not as tenacious did not get everything fixed (so I've been told). I've played/judged game-days, judged at local conventions, and played at larger conventions, and I'm still seeing issues with the online tracking come up.

This past March, I went to a DDXP extended premiere, Aggiecon, and played almost all Xen'drik games. These games were reported, but there were still issues with several of them. I had player activity for all of the games, but two of the games were missing from my character's record (so no gold/xp for that character for the adventure). I spoke to other players at the same table who also experienced the same exact thing, but with different games and characters (it wasn't just one table that was reported wrong, it varied from player to player).

Another issue was that none of the story objects went through. I spoke to the con coordinator about this (a really nice guy), and he said he had difficulty putting in more than one Story Object per game, but definitely put in at least one for the players. My personal belief was that the problem was not an issue with the data being entered incorrectly (because I received player credit for all the games), but that the database was messed up (and it didn't apply the XP/GP to the correct character or at all in many cases).

I sent in a request to rpgasanctioning@..., but these issues have still not been resolved. I sent in one message for my characters, then compiled a list of all the people that were at the tables, and submitted a second email with all the table data. Still nothing...

I post this here because I know these types of things have been resolved by posting here in the past, and I wanted to make sure the factionmasters know that the issues are continuing.

I've heard several people at tables I've played at or judged also say they've continued to have small problems with the online character tracking system. I have one fellow judge who was at DDXP whose Expedition was credited to the wrong character (bwc instead of cabal). She's sent in two updates, and it still hasn't been fixed.

This is enough of a problem--just because it chases away potential new players. The Campaigns were made to help get new players into the hobby, and I'm afraid that it may be hurting the hobby at times.

There is another big issue besides deterring new players; it is that that there may be other mistakes we can't tell are occurring--and can't request be fixed. We see that there are several mistakes in what games are reported, the story objects, etc. but we can't tell about our XP or gold. Our XP and gold are hidden from us, so we have to assume that all the adventure questions get into the system without error. After the other issues we've seen (in the visible tracking items), I highly doubt that XP and gp are always correct.

I have documentation from AJs (thank you very much, FMs!) for story objects, games played, etc... I can't get any documentation of XP and gp. The lack of control players have over their characters really prevents them from becoming invested in their PCs.

I know that this subject has been discussed in the past on these message boards, but I wanted to bring the subject back up because it is still hurting the campaign (and is still happening). I think many people have stopped reporting it because they've gotten tired of it. Those who aren't tenacious have quit the campaign, and those that are, are repeatedly emailing rpgasanctioning@... to get it fixed. It's still an issue for the goals that aren't visible.

As a solution, I would petition the powers that be to include the XP and gold in the adventures (as was briefly done before). This will provide the documentation needed to correct any glaring mistakes via the online tracking database. I know that the FMs were told to remove it, but other than posting our issues in this forum, what else can we do to get it back?

Would a petition help? I'd pass it around and sign it. How about email to someone at HQ?

Thanks.

Steven,

Thank you for taking the time to spell this out. As you have said, we Factionmasters really have no say in this matter. If we did, let's just say that this would no longer be an issue. I will go back to HQ and again ask/beg if there is any way that we can change things so that people can be given the ability to control their own XP and EV. I do not see it ending any differently than it has the several other times I have attempted this.

I will say that there may be some internal corporate mandates that I am not privy to at WotC that are forcing this implementation of an online character tracker, and if that is the case, there may be nothing that the RPGA can do about it either, unfortunately.

But I do feel your frustration. My main employment is with a software company that creates and maintains database-driven web interface systems that are much more complicated than the character tracker, and if we have even one field out of place or one hiccup in the system, we risk losing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Client support is our main concern, and hearing about these problems makes me smack my head on my desk in frustration. Nothing drives me madder than sitting at a convention and overhearing people say how much the D&D Campaigns suck because of reporting problems after we Factionmasters spend hours and hours trying to make the campaign the best it can be.

So thank you all again for playing, and for putting up with the problems that come up, and for acting as ambassadors to the campaign even in the face of this frustration. We'll go again to RPGA HQ and see if there isn't something we can do.

Thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate all the you FMs are doing, and I think we're all in the same boat. We're all just trying to make things better.

I think it was mentioned in these forums at some point that if we continued to have many problems after the hiccups at the start of the campaign, to let you guys know. That way, you have data to back up your reccomendations for changes.

Anyway, thanks for going to bat for us.

I just spoke to HQ about your problem. They do not have a record of your email so maybe it got lost in the ether. I'd send again. Anyway, I point out your post and the one on the CoL board and they are going to have someone look into it and see if they find a problem. They have had no other complaints besides these posts to the boards so it appears everyone else has been able to report the games with no problems, suggesting there was some sort of problem with AggieCon or maybe the person who input them? Either way they will check the system on their end and see if they find something.

To facilitate a speedy resolution to this process, please PM me with the text of the email you submitted to rpgasanctioning.

PM to Chis was sent.

Skerrit,
Thanks for talking to HQ for us. I forwarded on the correction message I'd sent (on April 10th). I can also forward on a 2nd message that was sent a few days earlier, but I don't think it would be worth it as there is only redundant information.

BTW, I'm sending these emails to rpgasanctioning@wizards.com; that's right isn't it?

I have been told by someone who played at DDXP that her character was reported wrong. She's submitted two updates, but hasn't gotten it fixed yet. I included her on the rpgasanctioning forward and on Chris' PM. Hopefully, that issue can also be resolved, but it indicates to me that the issue is still happening.

I've talked to some players who don't feel motivated to go through the hassles because they have AJs to track that they've played in those games. There hasn't been a realization that they may have lost xp/gold because of the issue. In the past, it wasn't as bad an issue because you could wait until the next level bump. Now, that's been fixed (thank you very much!).

I don't believe that all of the issues could be attributed to issues with the con entry because I have player credit for these games (as do the other players). We show activity under our reward points for these games, but they don't appear on our character record. I can't think of a way that the games could have been misreported and this could have happened.

Still, there are cases where LG judges who enter Campaign games at cons don't understand story objects or adventure questions, but I spoke to the con coordinator. He seemed to know what to do (before they were entered and after). The con was great, and he handled everything I could see very well.

Either way, this shows a flaw in the system. The online character tracking system has issues (either via data entry or database issues) that could cause problems for players if there is no transparency. The players can't tell if their gold/xp is wrong, but we've seen cases where games and story objects are wrong.

There may be a better solution that will help everyone out, but I'm not sure what it is. My only ideas are to live with the way it is now (flawed for some), or publish the data that is tracked online, so players can verify it.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across harsh, but I'm just trying to make things better. Things in XE are _so_ much better than MoH, and you FMs are a big part of that. Thanks for your efforts.

I am not entirely sure it is just because of problems with the database, seems more like a mix of the two (or more precisely: problems with the database that make booking a much more difficult and error prone process). I did get the xp/gp rewards from DDXP for all adventures I played, but not the story objects (except for the Cabal of Light). When I later ran an event of my own, it refused to accept the story objects for Cairn (did grant xp and gp), but accepted the ones for Trouble with Pirates without a hitch. A friend of mine booked Tomb of Tomes, and he had to vallidate it six times and than it went perfectly fine. One thing I did note, is that when it does not accept a booking, you have to fill in everything again except player names which increases the chances of errors with expedition adventures and missing story objects.

To be honest, I really don't mind missing xp or gp. The level bumps take care of that. It is the missing of story objects that I really dislike.

You are correct, the issues could be due to a mix of database issues or misreporting. It's hard to tell them apart, but I can't see any way that the con reporting could cause the missing games under just the characters (and these aren't expedition games that are missing--where you check which character to put the game toward).

It's funny, I'm not as worried about the Story Objects because they can be documented on my Adventure Journals. I know at most tables I've been to, many players groan about filling out AJs, and some skip them altogether. I have them signed at every table for cases like this, and I'm glad to have them. I think most people value them as a great backup for the games they've played.

I agree that the level bumps take care of some of the missing xp and gold, but one of the biggest complaints about the campaigns was that players weren't invested in their character because they get the XP and GP anyway at a level bump. The Factionmasters fixed this by putting out a ton of adventures--enough to beat the level bump!

Now, we need to make sure that players don't get *super* angry because they played enough to beat the level bump, but the online character tracker messed up and didn't give them the xp/gp they deserved. The online character tracker is probably the 2nd most often complaint that I hear about.

I do fill them in, but it is not exactly the same and you still need to get the text from somewhere since there is no way you write down the 10 lines or so on the journal and than get the next DM to belief the text ;) This of course is much less a problem if you tend to play at a home game...

Just as an update, I'm still not seeing any of the story objects for the I'd reported issues with, but my BWC now has credit for the game I played a month ago. Some fixes have been done.

Unfortunately, my Codex character is still missing the mod he ran in, and I'm playing in a codex game this weekend. :(

My Covenant of Light DM just informed us that one of the tables she ran recently wouldn't take the story objects when she tried to report it. She PM'd Mr Tulach about it with our info, but it's another case of issues with the online tracker.

I have another update:

I played two games this weekend and judged two. Every table had at least one person (not including me) who had some type of reporting issue. I pleaded with them to post to this thread so that it can be made more public that these issues are still happening. I hope to see some of their posts here.

At one game yesterday, it was easier to count the people who had issues with their characters than the ones who didn't! The biggest disappointment was being told by a regular LG player who had been _very_ active in Mark of Heroes that he'd "given up" on being able to track his Xen'drik characters online. He said he'd help us fill tables, but wasn't really connected to his XE characters or the campaign.

This is exactly the type of issue that we were trying to avoid; we're trying to make each of the campaigns better than the last one!

I understand that the FMs are working hard and doing their best to fix the issues that are within their control, but I feel that these issues that I'm bringing up are being dismissed (maybe by others) because there is a perception that there aren't enough complaints about it.

I'm trying to point out that I've had several emails and other messages go unanswered or ignored. I've been patient about getting my issues fixed, and I've been persistent when they aren't fixed. I've emailed the right people, and even started a thread here on the forum.

Most players won't go to that trouble!! Some of them have given up on ever getting the issues corrected and quit the campaign. Others have given up and have made peace with playing a character that isn't correct.

I'm bringing this up because it's one of the biggest complaints that I hear about XE (others being the gold spending cap per level and the loss of gold cap/action points/... for Level Adjusted characters). I want XE to succeed, and to draw in new players.

--Steven

P.S. My characters still haven't been fixed, but there has been one correction done. It's only been a week since I first started this thread, so hopefully the work is still in progress and will be completed at some point.
