I have a quick question. If you unlock a weapon or armor crystal with an expansion slot, does it unlock all version of that crystal? For example, if I unlock Crystal of Energy Assault, do I need to unlock a specific level crystal (least, lesser, or greater) or do I unlock the entire thing? And since this particular crystal can come in 4 different flavors (acid, cold, electricity, fire), do I need to specify which energy type also? Thanks for any clarification.

The answer to your question can be extrapolated from the section on th Expansion List (this particular paragraph on p13 of the XECS). A lesser crystal and a greater crystal (for example) has similar but different names, and so are unique (i.e. seperate) items and must be unlocked individually. However, the choice of element is a choice made subsequent to the unlocking crystal so you don't need to specify that bit when you unlock an item. This means you would have to unlock the least, lesser, and greater crystal of energy assualt seperately; but once you unlock a least crystal of energy assualt (for example) you could by one for each element (acid, cold, electricity, fire).

Looks like the answer's been codified into the new campaign standards.

Items with similar names, such as a 1st-level pearl of power
and a 2nd-level pearl of power or a Quaal’s feather token (tree)
and a Quaal’s feather token (fan) are considered separate items
and each must be unlocked separately. Items that have multiple
pluses, such as a vest of resistance, do not have to be separately
unlocked. Unlocking a vest of resistance unlocks +1 through +5
versions. As further example, unlocking a lesser crystal of
energy assault does not unlock a greater crystal of energy
assault but would let you choice both the acid and fire varieties
of the lesser crystal of energy assault.
