| Istaran12-04-06, 02:44 PM | During a recent session (CC#2), a fellow PC grappled and pinned my character solely to physically remove a plot-related item from my possession and keep it for himself. While this dealt no damage, it directly caused me to fail a side mission, and for him to succeed in a similar side mission and walk off with the story object as a reward. Is this within the legal bounds in XE? If so, is it within the legal bounds for me to deny him my auras (as a dragon shaman)? I can't imagine my character would continue to view him as an "ally" even when working together on Codex business. |

I can't imagine my character would continue to view him as an "ally" even when working together on Codex business. I can't speak to the first part officially (Though I'd always heard grappling, or other non-lethal attacks were allowed, that may have changed). However, as a dragon shaman you always determine who is affected by your aura. You can designate a party member as a 'non ally' for its purposes and you could designate someone outside your party as an 'ally' for its purposes. Harliquinn |
| Skerrit12-04-06, 04:31 PM | Harliquin is definately right about the second point. There is no reason you need to give him your auras (and truthfully I can see wanting to play with that player ever again). The PvP are sort of a grey area that exist largely because of the Cabal of Shadows. The situation you raise is exactly what we'd want to avoid and hope players can work out amicably. The phrase "The bonds of loyalty, or certainty of reprisals from above, keep PCs in the same Faction from direct confrontation" is vague on purpose though the later section detail CoS PCs go into more detail. I would say that the othe rplayer likely violated the direct confrontation part of that statement, but it is enough of grey area that it is a DM call and a good DM should do his or her best to guide the PCs in working it out. In general we want everyone to have fun but still be able to play their PCs. This usually works best if you can trick, plot, or plan your way around things as opposed that just beat eachother senseless. |
| quizboy12-04-06, 06:31 PM | Ok, I need a ruling here. This came up in a game this past weekend, and it made the situation difficult. Is hitting for non-lethal damage an attack? Specifically, in the Cabal, can one character hit another trying to do non-lethal damage? --Steven |

While this dealt no damage, it directly caused me to fail a side mission, and for him to succeed in a similar side mission and walk off with the story object as a reward. First of all, don't assume the story object is a reward. Not all of them are. Is this within the legal bounds in XE? If so, is it within the legal bounds for me to deny him my auras (as a dragon shaman)? I can't imagine my character would continue to view him as an "ally" even when working together on Codex business. I knew that aspect of the module might lead to problems, and in all the tables I've run it has worked itself out "peacefully." If I was judging, I would have allowed it, but I also would have docked the player who roughed up a fellow CC member gold and/or xp when I input the results, for acting in such a manner. Shawn |
| The_Newborn12-04-06, 07:28 PM | That is the kind of thing that would pass as acceptable in the Cabal of Shadows but nowhere else. |
| Istaran12-05-06, 03:18 AM | Thanks for the feedback. For now I think I'm going to withhold my auras and see if I can train him to be the universal charge target. (I'm getting Benign Transposition now that I've hit level 2, and he's a spike chain wielder.. if I swap him with whomever else is getting charged as a readied action, he can suprise them with an AoO ^_^ And probably take the hits as well. ) As for not playing with that player again.. it's sorely tempting, and has been even before this. But I'm not sure I want to deny my character his revenge. :P |

Shawn I'm just curious, are there rules for dealing with this officially? I don't recall policies for docking character gp/xp for player disruptions. It would be nice if there were though for when situations like this arise. Thanks, Harliquinn |
| smerwin2912-05-06, 09:11 AM | There are no rules for dealing with this officially. I would just abuse my power! :-D But you are correct that it would be nice to have such an option. This is something I will talk to August, Brian, Greg, and Chris about. The problem of PvP is that no matter how strict and precise you make the rules, there are always going to be circumstances you cannot foresee. And if you go to far in one direction, you are limiting the fun for those players who are mature and can handle internal party conflict, and have it actually add to the fun of the game rather than detract from it. Ah well. We'll see what we can do. Shawn |
| Harliquinn12-05-06, 09:59 AM | Definitely not an easy task! Anytime the group is not working towards the same goals there will be 'conflict'. This can go either way depending on the group makeup. I look forward to seeing anything you all come up with, as I'm sure it will be good. Harliquinn |
