| Timlagor05-13-07, 08:24 PM | Title says it all. Please list you Expansion Slot choices by level and character. The more details and explanation you can give the better. I'll be back with mine shortly but someone else can have the honour of posting the first list if they want :gift: :D |
| Harliquinn05-14-07, 08:48 AM | Blackwheel Company - Human Bard 1) Inspirational Boost (Song) (1 slot) 2) Masterwork Drum (Equipment) (1 slot) 3) Melodic Casting (Feat) (2 slots) 4) -- 5+) Likely some Dragonmarked Feats or spells Crimson Codex - Human Dragon Shaman 1) Dragon Shaman Class (Alternate Feature) (2 slots) 2) -- 3) Draconic Aura [Swiftness] (Aura) (1 slot) 4) Purple Mournlode (Equipment) (1 slot) Cabal of Shadows - Daelkyr Half-Blood Duskblade 1) Somatic Weaponry (Feat) (2 slot) 2) -- 3) Purple Mournlode (Equipment) (1 slot) 4) Arcane Strike (Feat) (2 slots) 5) -- |
| Timlagor05-14-07, 09:53 AM | Blackwheel Juggernaut (to be) 1-2) Extra Rage 3-4) Shock Trooper 5) Armbands of Might 6+) ??? Mad Foam Rager is a definite possibility and maybe Occult Slayer for later (gotta go somewhere after Juggernaut). Weapon Capsule Retainers are attractive but that would be at least 2 slots and probably 3 or more. I'm also tempted by PsychoActive Skin but none of them really stand out. I imagine I'll pick up one of the cheaper ones when the gp seems cheap. If I was good I'd get a Sacred Scabbard. |
| Timlagor05-14-07, 10:00 AM | I've just looked up Song of the Heart and I have two comments: 1) WOW! 2) Since it's in the ECS you don't need to spend Expansion Slots on it (afaict). |
| Marcus Majarra05-14-07, 12:14 PM | Well, the only ones set in stone, so far, are the ones for my Covenant Raportan Sorcerer: 1-2: Raptoran Sorcerer Substitution Levels (RotW) 3-4: Energy Substitution (CArc) 5-6: Fiery Burst (CM); I've yet to reach level 5, but this is what I'm looking at 7-9: Elemental Savant (CArc) After that, it's more loose. I need to free Sacred Exorcist at level 11, at the latest, and Silver Pyromancer at level 16, at the latest. This leaves me with three expansions before level 16, and two afterwards. These are minor points for my character. Perhaps I'll unlock the Vest of Resistance at level 10, in order to capitalize on resistance bonuses to saves and a Cloak of Charisma. Perhaps I'll take a Divine Feat in my late levels as well. My Codex Changeling Rogue has only freed his Racial Substitution levels thus far. |
| Timlagor05-14-07, 12:27 PM | Sorceror + Sacred Exorcist just screams for Sacred Healing (the CD version -not sure what the XECS says about that). I'd think you'd really want the Sandstorm Feat that I think is called Searing Spell to do your Fire damage to stuff with Resistance/Immunity but I suppose you can get away with Force Damage and/or Buffs/BControl etc. |
| Peter_Seckler05-14-07, 01:43 PM | This is for my Crimson Codex Bard: Spellscale Bard 1) Dragon Wings (feat) 2) (see above) 3) Force of Personality (feat) 4) (see above) 5) haven't picked yet! I can't remember if that second feat is called 'Force of Personality" or something similar. It's the one that let's you substitute your charisma for your bonus to Will Saves, rather than wisdom. My character is a Diva-- she uses her glamorous charm, dazzling beauty, and musical talent to mesmerize and distract so that the real Codex agents can get their jobs done. She isn't very powerful or anything, but she's a true delight to play. |
| bertman405-14-07, 04:01 PM | I can't remember if that second feat is called 'Force of Personality" or something similar. It's the one that let's you substitute your charisma for your bonus to Will Saves, rather than wisdom. That is a common misconception. Force of Personality does not let you substitute your Cha for Wis on all Will Saves. Force of Personality Prerequisite: Cha 13 Benefit: You add your Charisma modifier (instead of your Wisdom modifier) to Will saves against mind-affecting spells and abilities. Therefore, it is only a situational change. Against all other types of Will saves, it does nothing. You still use your Wis modifier. Bertman |
| Marcus Majarra05-14-07, 05:23 PM | Sorceror + Sacred Exorcist just screams for Sacred Healing (the CD version -not sure what the XECS says about that). I'd think you'd really want the Sandstorm Feat that I think is called Searing Spell to do your Fire damage to stuff with Resistance/Immunity but I suppose you can get away with Force Damage and/or Buffs/BControl etc. It's very late game, but Silver Pyromancer will take care of those immune to fire. Earliest I can see myself taking the PrC is 13th-level. |
| Harliquinn05-14-07, 10:21 PM | I've just looked up Song of the Heart and I have two comments: 1) WOW! 2) Since it's in the ECS you don't need to spend Expansion Slots on it (afaict). Fixed |
| Madfox1105-15-07, 09:01 AM | BW marshal/fighter: (1) Improved Buckler Defense (2) -- (3) Armor Specialization (heavy armor) (4) -- CC druid: (1) alternate class ability (2) -- (3) lesser vigor (4) Embrace the Wild (or whatever that spell is called) (5) two spells, have not yet decided CL goblin cleric: I haven't a clue... close wounds and lesser vigor are in there... |
| Timlagor05-15-07, 12:44 PM | I really like Lesser Vigor but I didn't think it was worth an ES when CLW is 'close enough'. Mass Resist Energy is truly outrageous for a Cleric (level 3!!!!!) The Druid may well want to look at Wilding Clasp (MIC -the end of the tools chapter iirc) |
| lordtiberiusfoxx05-15-07, 01:08 PM | Crimson Codex- Elf Swashbuckler (Pride of Breland) :duel: 1. Dark Lantern (Prestige class) 2. - 3. - 4. Toxic Tooth (Mundane item) Cabal of Shadows- Elf Beguiler 1. Versitile Spellcaster (Feat) 2. - 3. Conceal Spellcasting (Skill Trick) 4. - Covenant of Light- Elf Cleric of the Undying Court 1. Chosen of the Deathless (Feat) 2. - 3. Close Wounds (Spell) 4. Divine Insight (spell) Blackwheel Company- Elf Swashbuckler (Pride of Breland) I honestly can't remember because I DM BWC. |
| Marcus Majarra05-15-07, 10:51 PM | I really like Lesser Vigor but I didn't think it was worth an ES when CLW is 'close enough'. Unless, of course, you're planning on packing wands of lesser vigor over wands of cure light wounds. Although not as useful in the short-term, you get better out-of-combat healing mileage this way (110 hit points per wand, as opposed to 20-90 with an equivalent wand of cure light wounds). |
| Timlagor05-16-07, 12:37 AM | It's true that on average an out of combat LV is half the price of a CLW. In XE wands also beat PoPs for healing. If it was unlocked for me I'd use it without a moment's hesitation. However with so few ESs I just can't see the money saved being enough justification for spending one: these wands are going to be a pretty small proportion of your EV anyway.. and you're only saving half of that. LV doesn't let you do anything *new* and it doesn't make you any more effective in combat. I believe you also need Craft Wand to get the wands of LV ...don't you? (not that Craft wand isn't outstanding in XE) |
| Madfox1105-16-07, 11:01 AM | I really like Lesser Vigor but I didn't think it was worth an ES when CLW is 'close enough'. The downside of needing to create a character within a short time and not wanting to search through the books for hours ;) The spell is good. Mass Resist Energy is truly outrageous for a Cleric (level 3!!!!!) I thought it was 4th level for clerics, and 3rd level for druid. The powergamer in me definitely wants to take it, but the storyteller says it is just too powerful and I would regret taking it later on ;) The Druid may well want to look at Wilding Clasp (MIC -the end of the tools chapter iirc) True, but at the same time I also want to take Rapid Spell and the one from the Complete Mage that allows a character to cast three spells per day from a school with a meta-magic feat with the +level cost 1 lower. He already has Spell Focus (conjuration) and Augmented Summoning. Combining the two makes quite a good druidic summoner ;) |
| Timlagor05-16-07, 02:07 PM | True, but at the same time I also want to take Rapid Spell and the one from the Complete Mage that allows a character to cast three spells per day from a school with a meta-magic feat with the +level cost 1 lower. He already has Spell Focus (conjuration) and Augmented Summoning. Combining the two makes quite a good druidic summoner ;) I can't really agree with that.. unless you think "makes quite a quite good" means the same as "redefines the definition of what it means to be a good" :P |
| lseelba05-19-07, 02:42 PM | It's true that on average an out of combat LV is half the price of a CLW. In XE wands also beat PoPs for healing. LV doesn't let you do anything *new* and it doesn't make you any more effective in combat. I believe you also need Craft Wand to get the wands of LV ...don't you? (not that Craft wand isn't outstanding in XE) You would either need to have Craft Wand or you would need to find a Wand of Lessor Vigor listed explicitly in a splatbook and use an expansion slot to unlock that item. That would be two expansion slots sadly...one for the spell and one for the item. If you had UMD high enough you could just unlock the wand and use it that way... Regardless it's probably a moot point because I doubt you can find a Wand of Lessor Vigor listed explicitly in a splatbook. This applies to scrolls, potions, and wands as well. Just because you have unlocked a spell, it doesn't mean you have unlocked the associated scrolls, wands, and potions to buy. If you can craft those items you can craft them, but you can't buy them otherwise. As far as rods and rings and wonderous items, you don't unlock those items related to that unlocked spell even if you could craft them. You still have to spend an unlock slot :weep: (Note: I might be wrong in my interpretation of this rule. The campaign hasn't gotten to the point where people can craft wands and staves. Who knows if that staff of unfettered heroism will be creatable XD) |
| Timlagor05-19-07, 03:53 PM | I knew that really (and you are right) ..but my only spellcaster is an Artificer (well close enough) and so that's the context I was thinking in. (ie having all the basic Craft Feats when they become available). It does make the LV spell even less attractive to Cleric though. (if there is a wand listed somewhere then I haven't seen it) |
| Still05-19-07, 04:11 PM | First character complete!! Crimson Codex: Dwarven Rog1/Ftr3 1) Mage Slayer (2 slots) - Complete Arcane 2) Pierce Magical Protection (2 slots) - Complete Arcane Thats all 4 expansion slots for my character and at 5th level (4th level of Fighter) I will actually get to take the Pierce Magical Protection feat which is so nice for circumventing wizardly spell protections. Went for a Dwarven Fighter/Rogue trained to eliminate spellcasters of all types. Knowledgeable, combat capable and can really mess up a wizards day. He isn't ruthlessly hunting down mages just does his part for the leadership of the Crimson Codex in keep rival spellcasters in hand who might jeopardize the work of the faction. |
| Reylance05-19-07, 05:41 PM | Gnoll Gish 1.-2. Healing Package 3. Critical Strike 4.-5. Melee Weapon Mastery-Slashing 6. Sonic Weapon 7.-9. Abjurant Ch-eese-ampion |
| Skerrit05-19-07, 09:05 PM | 1) Mage Slayer (2 slots) - Complete Arcane 2) Pierce Magical Protection (2 slots) - Complete Arcane Pierce Magical Concealment & Pierce Magical Protection are restricted (See the last page of the XECS). |
| Lilinthra05-20-07, 01:20 AM | Blackwheel Company - Human Scout/Ranger 1-2) Bounding Assault (Feat) 3-4) Swift Hunter (Feat) 5-6) Extreme Leap (Skill Trick) Didn't have much in mind for expansion items back at Dragon*Con when I made the character, so that explains the high-level feat which may never see the light of play. Post-level bump, there was Complete Scoundrel, so a few feats & skill tricks from there, and then maybe some expansion equipment. |
| dreamwolf05-20-07, 08:00 AM | Covenant of the Light Sorcerer 1 & 2--> Celestial Sorcerer Heritage 3--> Kelgore's firebolt 4 & 5--> Celestial Sorcerer Aura |
| Still05-20-07, 08:32 AM | Oh crap! I am such a fool!! |
| Still05-20-07, 08:33 AM | Teach me to make a character without the Campaign doc in front of me at work! |
| Still05-20-07, 02:36 PM | Switched out first expansion slot to: Prestige class: Occult Slayer Takes care of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd levels. Not sure what to do with the one for 4th. I scoured the boards and the campaign doc and I am almost CERTAIN that it is not on any restricted list and doesn't have a card associated with it. |
| Timlagor05-20-07, 04:49 PM | You're fine with Occult Slayer. |
| Still05-20-07, 06:21 PM | Woohoo! I wasn't doing so well there for awhile :) Thanks for the corrections |
| lordtiberiusfoxx05-29-07, 05:36 PM | Blackwheel Company - Human Bard 1) Inspirational Boost (Song) (1 slot) 2) Masterwork Drum (Equipment) (1 slot) 3) Melodic Casting (Feat) (2 slots) 4) -- 5+) Likely some Dragonmarked Feats or spells Crimson Codex - Human Dragon Shaman 1) Dragon Shaman Class (Alternate Feature) (2 slots) 2) -- 3) Draconic Aura [Swiftness] (Aura) (1 slot) 4) Purple Mournlode (Equipment) (1 slot) Cabal of Shadows - Daelkyr Half-Blood Duskblade 1) Somatic Weaponry (Feat) (2 slot) 2) -- 3) Purple Mournlode (Equipment) (1 slot) 4) Arcane Strike (Feat) (2 slots) 5) -- I notice that Purple Mournlode is on two characters; you must like it. I've never heard of it on the other hand. Which book is it in? |
| Cainin05-30-07, 09:50 AM | Blackwheel: Warforged Fighter 2 / Totemist 2 <Creation Card: Shaper of Soul Mist> 1st: (item) Psionic Tatto: Force Screen (Expanded Psionics) 2nd: (item) Psionic Tatto: Expansion (Expanded Psionics) 3rd: (item) Cloak of Elemental Protection (Miniatures) 4th: (item) Vest of Resistance (Complete Arcane) |
| Madfox1105-30-07, 10:15 AM | Checked my goblin cleric (since I am playing him tonight), I was partially incorrect: it is ressurgance, close wounds and augmented healing. The next slot will be church inquisitor. |
| Harliquinn05-30-07, 11:09 AM | Purple Mournlode is in Magic of Eberron. It counts as both silver and cold iron for the purposes of overcoming DR of undead. For my Dragon Shaman it was just because I really didn't have a lot of expansion slot needs early on. I forget all the details, but it seemed like a nice catch all material for undead fighting (Which really hasn't been the case in most of the modules). |
| Lightblade06-01-07, 03:52 PM | For Lady Ivex (rog/psi) [Using Uncommon Changeling] Level 1: Noble Birth Level 2&3: Practiced Manifester feat Level 4&5 Enemy Knowledge Skill Trick (forget it's exact name) For Vergere Level 1&2 Raptoran Cleric Racial Sub Levels Level 3&4 Augment Elemental feat |
| Mad Monkey06-03-07, 02:48 PM | For Boris the Butcher, my Crimson Codex half-orc knifethrower. He's only 4th level, but his expansion slots are already filled up to 10th level. lvl 1 - Brutal Throw feat (CA, 2 slots) lvl 3 - Gauntlet of Extended Range (MIC, doubles range for thrown weapons) lvl 4 - Meteoric Knife (MIC, +1 dagger with returning up to 3 times/day, costs only 500 gp more than normal +1 dagger) lvl 5 - Master Thrower PrC (CW, 3 slots) lvl 8 - Ranged Weapon Mastery feat (PHB2, 2 slots) For Silver, my Covenenant of Light Warforged Psion. lvl 1 - Power Crystal (Magic of Eberron) lvl 2 - Psionatrix of Clairvoyant Sense (Comp. Psi) lvl 3 - Skin of Ectoplasmic Armor. Unfortunately this item now costs twice as much in the new MIC. At 6000 gp, it has become quite expensive to buy. lvl 4 - Evade Attack power (Comp. Psi) |
| Jesse Heinig06-05-07, 09:17 PM | Cabal of Shadows human cleric (of Vol) 3/dread necromancer 1: 1-2: Tomb-Tainted Soul feat (Libris Mortis) 3-5: Dread Necromancer base class (Heroes of Horror) Probably gonna take Corpsecrafter for 6-7 and True Necromancer for 8-10. |
| Timlagor06-05-07, 10:53 PM | Mad Monkey: I hope you noted the wording of the Returning Ability -it's not practical to use more than two of them at a time because they all come back at the beginning of the round and you have only 2 hands to catch with. |
| Wick06-09-07, 12:59 AM | Ok, I was at a minor convention a month or so ago and decided to play a fast play PC, the 4th lvl Elven Druid from the XE website. I really liked the pc and decided that I would continue to use him and advance him. But I am having a hard time determining the Expansion Slot use. Can you guys take a look and advise me? |
| lseelba06-09-07, 03:46 AM | Ok, I was at a minor convention a month or so ago and decided to play a fast play PC, the 4th lvl Elven Druid from the XE website. As far as items go: Hide Shield from Sandstorm Pick an Armor you like from Stormwrack For everything else...it really depends on what kind of druid you are. The Vigor spells are great from Complete Divine for healing purposes. What focus is your druid? |
| Wick06-09-07, 11:34 AM | So I should have 4 expansion slots because he is 4th lvl right? And I have to use and expansion slot for anything not in the PHB, DMG, or ECS. Right? |
| pedr06-09-07, 12:36 PM | Just about. Mark of Heroes and Xen'drik Expansion Cards (Campaign Cards which say 'Expansion' on them) can unlock things without you having to use an Expansion Slot. You can also use your Expansion Slots for a few other things, as mentioned in the CS. Note specifically the different costs for things (2 for feats, 1 for items and spells, 3 for PrCs etc) |
| smerwin2906-09-07, 03:53 PM | In addition to the Player Reward cards, sometimes Story Objects unlock things. Story Objects can be earned by playing adventures. |
| Timlagor06-09-07, 04:28 PM | If you ever plan to Wildshape you'll want the Wilding Clasp from MIC. I'd seriously consider making your own Druid with a higher Constitution score though. |
| lseelba06-09-07, 06:21 PM | If you ever plan to Wildshape you'll want the Wilding Clasp from MIC. I'd seriously consider making your own Druid with a higher Constitution score though. I agree. There is absolutely no reason for your druid to not have 14 Con...stupid wild shape rules errata... |
