Xendrik Expeditions Online! [Archive] - Wizards Community

Well, XE Faction Adventures and DM's Mark adventures are now legal to play online.

My weekly group is very involved in a whole 'nuther campaign I happen to be running, but I still have a burning desire to run some Xendrik Expeditions! Specifically, I would like to run the Cabal of Shadows faction adventure #4- Fire in the Heart of Madness. Why this one? Well, I ran it 3 times at DDXP and had a great time with it.

So I thought about it some and I decided to run it online. I'm using FantasyGrounds. If you want to play, you will need a copy of the FantasyGrounds Client.

So if you missed out on DDXP, or simply want to get started trying out XE, and you are interested in playing Cabal of Shadows, let me know. If you don't yet have an RPGA membership, I can help you get an RPGA number by filling out a card for you, giving you the number, then mailing you your card.

I plan on running this one on Saturday, February 24th, 6PM EST. I'm not sure I'll get enough players, but I think I'll give it a shot.

Any takers?

I'm interested...Saturday at 6PM Eastern is a little early for me. 9PM would be better or a different day.

I'm going to be out of town for most of Saturday. If it were a little later I could do that date, but I understand that online games take longer to run and might be the reason for the time.

I've also never used FantasyGrounds and would need to investigate that first.

I'll keep it in mind!... I'm comitted to doing it this time on Friday at the aforementioned time, but if we can get together with a better date/time I'll be glad to run this adventure anytime.

I would be interested, and I think I should be able to make it (I can confirm by tomorrow). Might be able to bring another player with me as well

Are DM Marks out yet? I will likely never get the chance to play in a DM's Mark unless I do it online. That would be a very attractive option to me as I can play them and then run them for my local players.

I was at DDXP and played all of the Xen'drik events.

As for the Expedition, is it only available to Con attendees? I tried downloading it for home game use and I can't find it.

I too would be interested in playing a DM's Mark or 4 online. As above, I tend to try to play them and then run them for my gaming group.

I would love to make up for my traveling woes to DDXP and play.

Here's another vote for Saturday a little later than 6pm (to get the kids in bed).

I didn't understand the bit about Friday. Are you proposing another day or are you already running it Friday as well?
Peter_Seckler

02-21-07, 02:21 PM
Whoops. I am running this on SATURDAY, Feb 24th. 6PM. If it doesn't fill up or go off, I will be happy to reschedule. Talk amongst yourselves if you can think of a good time to do it.

I would like to run this via FantasyGrounds or something similar. I already own FantasyGrounds so that would be easy, but heck, I'll do it any way I can.

I did all the faction modules at DDXP. However, I will keep an eye out if anyone runs some DM's Marks online.

Hey :) I can't make this Saturday (2300GMT is a bit late to start, but doable for me from time to time, but I have friends visiting) but I'm very interested to play at some point.

I've played using OpenRPG a few times and found no problems - and its free, which helps!

Not sure Im cool with shelling out that much for a chat program I havent tried. Unless I can just use the demo version for now, but I don't believe that is compatible with the full (swear I read that on their web page somewhere, but now I can't find it... so maybe I made it up).

Are there any free programs you'd be willing to try?
DiegoNegro

02-21-07, 05:34 PM
Personally, I would prefer openrpg as well. It's free, easy to download, and I'm already using it.

I'm interested. Don't have a character yet, but that's not a problem. So, let me know what program. I've never gamed online either, so I'd appreciate any pointers (like, should I dress nice, or is a bathrobe okay? Do I have to bring snacks for everyone? You know, that kind of stuff ;)

Fantasy Grounds *does* have a free demo client you can tinker with. It's got a few bugs that have been removed in the later versions, as well a couple missing functions, but will still give you a general idea of it's worthiness (or lack thereof, since we all have varied tastes).

Also, it's worth noting that Fantasy Grounds, OpenRPG, KloogeWorks, and the myriad other titles out there are "Tabletop Simulators" and not merely chat programs. By far and large they include image sharing (for maps) character sheets, combat trackers, die rollers, and chat all in one package. Some have more features, some have less, so its worth finding what you like.

Though, I'd aruge that what the DM likes may have an added "weight" to the decision. After all, creating the maps, NPCs, and other content in a program-specific format takes a little work, and finding a program that lets the DM do so "comfortably" will make for a better game session methinks.

But . . . I ramble on.

As I said before, I am interested. I've cleared my calendar for 6pm EST too.

Do we have a quorum, yet? Can someone tally the interested parties? I have to jet to my retail's game night!

In light of the previous reply, I'll use any software the DM wants. Let me know so I can buy it and get used to the interface before the game....
DiegoNegro

02-22-07, 07:40 PM
I count 3 that could do it Saturday at a later time (including Max ed who can start at 6PM EST as well)

I count 2 that could do it Saturday at 6PM EST (including Max again and deleting Diablo 05 and friend that had to bow out)

1 that prefers another day

2 that are waiting for DM marks

If ajpopp is good with a later start as well, sounds like we would have a table!
Peter_Seckler

02-22-07, 07:40 PM
Man I do NOT want to make people buy software. I was hoping for "hey, I already have that.. "

OK, go here.

http://www.fantasygrounds.com/calendar/?id=142

And if you have the program and can make it, sign on, and I will automatically approve the first 6 guys. If we get 4, we'll run. If not, DONT PANIC! I will get OpenRPG, and run this on Saturday March 3 at 8PM EST. (Is that late enough for you guys?)

OK, let me know. :)
pedr

02-22-07, 08:57 PM
I think that I could make that, if I slept very late that morning :D

Is there space for me? Thanks for offering and organising this!
MysticRhythms

02-22-07, 09:04 PM
Yeah, I'm a no-go for Mod 4's. but sign me up for DM's Marks. I'll buy whatever software is necessary and I'll make time.
ajpopp

02-23-07, 06:08 PM
Later time is fine with me. In fact, the kids would be in bed, which would be nice...

I don't have FantasyGrounds yet. Downloaded the demo, it looks good. But their web site says the demo won't work with lite and full versions, and since the DM needs to have a full version...so, I'm not going to buy it unless I know we're playing, since I may never use it otherwise. I'm assuming I can d/l it tomorrow afternoon and install it without problems. Does anyone have information to the contrary?
Peter_Seckler

02-24-07, 09:01 AM
Ok, I will be there tonight. I have 2 signups and a third person "interested" but hasn't committed yet.

Here's the calendar entry to sign on:
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/calendar/?id=142

1) I don't want to make anyone buy this tabletop program I want to use. I really like it, so far! But I understand. So tonight? It's on FantasyGrounds. Next week it will be on OpenRPG (which is free). The medium is not that important to me. My goal is to help people beat the level bump at GenCon and "be involved" with XE. :)

This is still just the 4th Faction Adventure. I will be writing DM's marks as soon as they become available too! I want to be a GM for both Cabal and Crimson Codex.

I am also interested in playing anyone's DM's marks for especially Crimson Codex and Blackwheel stuff. because I lurve my Codex character so much, I want to to avoid GMing anything I haven't already played first. But I'll play any DM's mark, and if any faction adventures come out, (beyond Tomb of Tomes which I played) I'll be all over those.

I'm a little new with fantasygrounds.

If this is happening (is it?), how do we connect. Are we supposed to have a host connection to input?

How do I change status from pending to active (do you do this Peter?)?

How do I save my character sheet?
Peter_Seckler

02-24-07, 06:53 PM
Well, I changed the status. The connection thingy is your'e supposed to log onto my server alias:

"Zany roll just wand"

But I may have screwed up the ports thingy, because nobody has signed on yet. (whoops...) And it's nearly 7...

Ah, foiled by technology.
Max_ed

02-24-07, 07:21 PM
So was I supposed to type in "Zany roll just wand" in the host address? I did that and it said it couldn't connect. Did I do something wrong or did I just wait too long?

Fantasygrounds looks like a nice looking product, but I don't seem to know how to use it yet. Since I spent money on it, I'll keep on figuring it out.

I've spent a little time on the Openrpg site. Is this going to happen next week?
WolfStar76

02-24-07, 11:08 PM
You need to setup port forwarding on your router to get any program (FG, OpenRPG, etc) to allow an inbound connection.

Furthermore, you'll probably also need to inform your local firewall software that you're allowing traffic on port "x" to program "y" or else, the port will forward and your firewall will shoot you down.

For FantasyGrounds you at least have the advantage of not needing to hand out your public IP address (which can be confusing for some people).

To answer the earlier questions, yes, the "zany roll just wand" is the correct "host" address. If you're technical at all, FG essentially runs a dynamic dns service that maps that to the host IP (non-techs, ignore that).

I strongly recommend you have someone (from here, or from the FG forums, they're a friendly lot) try to connect to your FG server in the next couple days *before* you're scheduled to play.

Heck, maybe I'll even re-install my copy and help you out if you ask nice and I've got a few spare minutes. ^_^

Advice on getting RPGA games sorted online can be found at a couple of Yahoo! Groups: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/LG_Europe_Online/ (for evenings GMT-ish) and http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/OnlineGameDay/ (for evenings US time-ish).

I believe they have started to show some interest in running XE games, though I don't follow them closely so don't know if they actually run any yet.

There are some pretty permanent OpenRPG servers, including 'Blackstar' which seems to be used for a lot of RPGA games.
Peter_Seckler

02-25-07, 08:27 AM
I'm going to try OpenRPG next week, same deal. Dan Erbacher (aka Herrbard, see the other post called 'another Xendrik Online game') will be running the same mod.

I'm going to get my stuff sorted out on FG, but in the meantime I will be doing this again on Open RPG, March 3rd, 8PM. More details soon.

Sorry about the technical difficulties of last night but I am not giving up! Once we have a vehicle for playing and reporting faction adventures and DM's Marks up and running I think XE will become a lot more popular.

Wolfstar76,

Do the players need to do any of the router/network stuff you mentioned or was that only for the host?

I'd like to figure this out for openrpg and FG. It opens up all sorts of options.

Thanks

For most users, no, the players/clients won't need to make any changes to their firewalls or ports to connect.

It's possible that someone may have their firewall(s) "turned up to 11" and need to give themselves permission to get out on a non-standard port, but hopefully anyone who's got security that tight knows enough to make those kinds of changes.

As a rule of thumb, firewalls and routers allow any traffic OUT. It's traffic coming *IN* that they're designed to block. That's why the GM/Host/Server needs to tinker. They need to tell the router where to deliver the incoming packets, and they need to tell their firewall(s) that the packet is expected and to allow it.

Guys! I'm back! I fixed it!

I'm going to run a game tonight (Saturday, March 3, 8PM EST).

I'm going to run Fire in the Heart of Madness, Cabal of Shadows adventure #4.

I'm using FantasyGrounds. Logon to :

loud camp epic hook

(no password)

If you don't have a character already and don't know how to figure out the campaign standard, I highly recommend using a fastplay character. Grab one of the cabal characters or any of the 'Any faction' characters from here:

It worked, and I must report a successful adventure took place!

Ok, now that I've done this once I've learned a lot of tricks. I think I'm going to stick to FantasyGrounds as my platform for online stuff. I'll post again once the DM's marks come out (and I have one finished!)

I'm considering running the Crimson Codex faction adventure #4 (Tomb of Tomes). I have already played it, and I ran it once at DDXP. Let me figure out a date for it.

03-04-07, 09:31 AM
I'd definitely be interested in CC4. My CC character, unplayed since Well of Woe at the UK Extended Premiere, has been re-built as a Dragon Adept from Dragon Magic. (At least I think he has - since I've not played since well before the 1.1 CS came out I might change my mind!)

Now from my perspective a morning (EST) start would be most accessible... and I'm busy on weekends until 24th/25th March but if there's any chance that it might be starting sometime in the morning or afternoon (but probably not evening!) of either of those days please let me know!
ajpopp

03-04-07, 12:07 PM
I played as well--it was a good time! Fantasy Grounds is a great interface and Peter did a great job. The game went a bit long, but I hear that's typical for online gaming. (And hey, I'd rather have a long good time than a short crummy time!)

I'm hoping we'll see other factions online now. The Cabal isn't my preferred faction, so how about some of the others? Any DMs out there who want to keep Xen'drik Expeditions Online growing and active?

I would be very interested in either of those modules.

UK-friendly times preferred, but not absolutely necessary, and I'm not available on Friday (well, until about 1am GMT so 9pm EDT - we don't have daylight savings until Sunday morning).

OpenRPG preferred as well, but I'd be willing to consider other platforms.

Here is the tentative listing (not locked in yet) of the rest of my online Xendrik slots.

Anyone interested? Let me know.

Unless otherwise stated, these will take place at 7PM EST on Saturdays online, on FantasyGrounds. This is a tentative listing only, since I can only book 4 slots in advance, and 2 of those are usually used by my regular home campaign.

21 April -- Covenant of Light faction mod #5
28 April -- Covenant of Light Dm's Mark #4
5 May -- Crimson Codex faction mod #5
12 May -- Crimson Codex Dm's Mark #4
19 May -- Blackwheel Co. faction mod #5
26 May -- Blackwheel Co. DM's Mark #4
2 June -- Cabal of Shadows faction mod #5
9 June -- Cabal of Shadows DM's Mark #5
16 June -- Covenant of Light DM's Mk #5
23 June -- Crimson Codex DM's Mk #5
30 June -- Blackwheel Company DM's Mk #5

The following dates are open. I'm not sure if we're getting more adventures between now and then.

July 7
July 14
July 21
July 28

The following two dates are reserved for (hopefully) running slot 0 adventures for GenCon DM's who are getting up to speed for the big show.

August 4
August 11

Well, I've run the Cabal of Shadows one 5 times, and the Codex one once. I've played in the Blackwheel one (and I loved it..) I *think* you were in my Cabal table at DDXP.

but.. I dunno, I'm trying to hit all the new stuff in the time between now and GenCon, and still leave some leeway, I guess.

It's a good thing I don't pay you to think, 'cause I'd be wasting my money! j/k

I wasn't at DDXP. The thing is, Montreal is far away from most of the fun conventions and my schedule is somewhat busy, so I can't manage such a vacation. The best I did for an RPGA event was senior hosting a game day (or game week-end) to introduce Xen'drik Expeditions to as many people as I could gather last summer. Didn't go as well as I'd liked.

In any case, I was asking because my main character is my Codex rogue. I'm eager to get all the available adventures played with that character (this includes both faction mods, both DM's marks, and the Cairn of Stone Hearts expedition) and keep him as advanced as possible (I managed to get 8,450 gp and nearly level 5 with the first part of Xen'Ex).
Peter_Seckler

04-19-07, 04:48 AM
Hm.. Well.. maybe I could do Codex #4.

My favorite character to play is my Codex one, so I have been holding out on booking Crimson Codex slots in the hopes that someone else does first, so I can play.

04-19-07, 08:29 AM
I could try to run a Codex 4 Online game sometime (is that something you need Peter?). Unfortunately it is also my primary faction so I try to play with it. I will see if I can get anyone locally to run the Codex Mods so I can play then run them online for others.

I am experimenting with OpenRPG and will happily run the Crimson Codex modules.

Unfortunately I have no experience with online play. I had hoped to be ready to play this saturday, but it looks like next weekend before I can have CC4 ready. Or what I think will be ready . . . (I imagine the prep time would be greatly reduced if I could cut and paste from the adventures. However, security settings prevent that. :( )

I also have to work out where to host the required images.

So, any helpful hints, tips or advice will be appreciated.

After I get into the swing of it, I will try to run adventures as needed.

There has been something of an explosion of Xendrik on the OnlineGameDay yahoo group (and the associated warhorn page) recently if people are looking to play things.

I'd love to play many of these games and FBG does look like a significantly nicer tool than OpenRPG (so I certainly don't blame those who have it for wanting to use it) but I'm going to have to stick with the budget version for now.
Peter_Seckler

04-21-07, 01:14 PM
Tim.. I totally understand, and I think it's for the best to have some diversity of tools at this point. I will have to join this group so I can check this out, myself.

When I started doing this online thing- it was kinda on a wild whim- I had just bought a new laptop. I knew I wanted to play more Xendrik, but I couldn't get people in my area involved. Once I heard we could run this stuff online, I evaluated what program I thought worked out best for me, and tried to tap into the existing community over at FG as players. I have some of them, but I think it's only smart to advertise my RPGA slots over here and on the XE Yahoo group.

So far, I've pretty much had enough players for just my slots. So if other people are running with other stuff, thats great too (I may even get a chance to play again..!)

If so, could I request a 7pm start time like this week? :) If it needs to be earlier, that's cool also, as I'm still very interested. In case you "onliners" haven't yet noticed, FantasyGrounds II dropped today.

I'm running the auto-updater right now (which seems to download the bulk of the application), but my impressions from the beta have been VERY positive.

If I'm not mistaken FGII also installs in a different Program Files folder - so you can keep the old and the new live on the same system.

I don't, but thats just because I never had. Also some people are still on dial-up believe it or not! I might add it as an option, but I don't think I would make it manditory.

I'd offered Peter the use of a TeamSpeak server (I already host one for friends, it wouldn't take more than a moment to virtualize a second one).

I'm happy to extend that offer to the rest of the community, as desired.

Honestly I would avoid the use of teamspeak in online games, for various reasons (Reasons why I think online play can be much more RP intensive than tabletop at times):

1) Some people are naturall soft-spoken or shy and won't talk much. These are the people that get overlooked at normal gaming tables or ignored. The ability to type what you say without anyone being able to talk over you or have trouble hearing you eliminates this.

2) Duplex problems. Only one person can talk at a time around a table. Online, everyone can be typing and it will all still appear and be comprehensible to the other players and the DM. This speeds things up a lot.

3) Actions/Emotes. The online game provides a nice way to graphically describe what your character is doing [b]in character[/i]. This is usually handled with voice as "My character does this..." or something to those lines, and it's sometimes hard to convey what you mean with words.

4) Accents/Speech. It's easier to effect an accent or manner of speaking if you type it for many people. It's also easier to believe the character is a female, gnome, raspy old man if it isn't broken with a really contradictory voice on the other end (Sounds shallow I know but it's still there).

So for me, in the games I run or play, I'd prefer no voice (at least during the game)

Oooh! Oooh! Me! Me! Me! (hops up and down with hand in the air)

I played the three rounds of Well of Woe at GenCon last year...and it grieves me enormously to say that my poor character hasn't seen any action since. Probably NOT a good thing for the mental health of a Valenar Elf!

I didn't know of the existence of the faction-specific mods at registration time last year, so I need everything I can get...although I believe the first three adventures are retired now, no?

Anyway, I'm ready to go!

Harliquinn :)

It's all a matter of preference. With my "local" online group (friends scattered cross-country) we've found that it has benefits AND disadvantages, just like anything else.

What worked best was using TeamSpeak for OOC question & answers ("Where's the rule for doing a double-backflip while tossing three daggers at a Giant's Eye again?") and leaving any and all character actions and re-actions in the game software (FG, ORPG, whatever).

Teamspeak thereby allowed us to more quickly troubleshoot ("What are you guys shooting at? I don't see a Troll token . . .), as well as answer questions without bogging down the GM who's already juggling (on average) 5+ windows, typing as themselves, and as any number of schizophrenic characters. :)

Of course, we had the added advantage of everyone already having a nice headset microphone, and experience in using TeamSpeak from our other games, that we were able to bypass the occasional hassles of setting up TeamSpeak the first time too.

~shrug~ The offer stands if anyone wants it. Like I said -- it can be great, but it can also be more hassle than it's worth. It's all in how you want to run/play your games. :)

Though, for the record - #4, shallow or not, is why I'll never be a proponent of voice-chat being built-into an MMO. But that's a whole 'nuther discussion. :)

Which character was yours? Also after the fact I realized how ridiculous a Xen'drik boomerang covered with Seren art is. I think that boomerang thing was supposed to be completely unrelated with the rest of the mod.

Kinestra, the Scout. The class gets evasion at 5th level, but since she is multi-classed she didn't have it yet. There was a Scout NPC in my home game last week and I think that was the source of my confusion.

Had a different thought on the boomerang, but it wasn't much different than what happened in the module.

Anyway, I think I can run a module or two in a few weeks; I just want to get some practice with the map and drawing tools first.

Is there a particularly good forum/arena/group where you can find xen'drik games online? I've check some of the various links people have mentioned in this thread and there doesn't seem to be much planned for the near future on calendars.

My main character is for Cabal of Shadows and we play locally. We probably won't be able to get through everything before the level bump, so this might be one way of getting to everything.

Aside from that I'm wide open, though looking more closely at the Crimson Codex, perhaps with an Archivist.

With the Level Bump blackout starting on July 29th, and Origins not getting over until July 8th, we needed to release these adventures earlier. GenCon France was supposed to be the premiere, but for some reason (I don't know it) they did not, but either way they are now up for general release. You can still play them at Origins, obviously. I know many people cannot find a table and don't want to/can't play online, so this is their chance.
