| The-Tortoise04-23-08, 04:14 PM | Hello all! Let me preface this by saying that I'm a first-time poster here, so if I come off as stupid-sounding, I apologize in advance. That said, I'm in need of a little help. My gaming group's regular weekly game has been cancelled for a few weeks, so in its place we decided that we'd play a 40th level pick-up game. With me as the DM. The flavor of the game is pretty mutable (read: nonexistent) at this point, so there will be no issues there. The crux of the matter is... I need a big, angry, scary guy with lots of shiny, pointed objects to put the fear of god into my PCs. Above all, I want this final encounter to be challenging! CR 40-42ish is preferable. Does anyone have any handy links to or ideas for CR 40 BBEGs? Thanks in advance! |

Look for holes in the party's defences and exploit them. Look for their save or die effects and make sure he can beat them 95% of the time. Give him enough hp to last ten rounds of direct hp assaults from all party members. His total hp pool can be reduced by giving him regeneration and access to spells like heal. Give him SR 55 or higher. Open up combat with Mordenkainen's Disjunction. Make sure he can see the party and reach them. Something like blindsight coupled with see invisibility. Make sure he has near total immunity to all energy types. Make sure he doesn't need to breathe air. Make his AC just high enough that a buffed up fighter hits him 50% of the time. It makes for dramatic combat. Give him minions! Lots of mooks that go down in one or two hits but can catch your party by surprise. Overall, the goal is to make him last ten rounds, to not kill the party but maybe kill one or two characters, and to make it feel climactic and desperate. Make sure he has access to epic spells. Make one that does 20d20 force damage as a quickened action. Make another that does 10d6 per round. I've never tried to challenge a 40th level party, but I'm guessing that if my 11th level party took out 15 CR 18s in one messy combat then a 40th level party should be able to take out anything. Actually, I could make a monster for you if you had their character sheets. Hope that helps. barring that, you might try this: Marilith dervish 10/sorcerer 5/knight phantom 10/ur-priest 3/mystic theurge 10, carrying six aurorum +3 greater wounding metalline speed large longswords. Take perfect multiweapon fighting and quicken spell like ability (greater teleport). One full attack in a dervish dance should knock the target's CON to 0. Then cast celerity and quickened teleport away as soon as you finish. Add in some shadowdancer levels for fun. Give her some infernals as consorts, a pet hecatonchieres, and let her live in an iron colossus. |

| Tequila_Sunrise04-23-08, 07:53 PM | I like Elondir's suggestion to look at all your players' character sheets before making your BBEG. Epic play is EXTREMELY dependant on how much your players power game, so a CR 40 BBEG that we recommend for you might be a TPK or it might be a 1 round combat. A couple of Elondir's suggestions I have to disagree with though. Don't make your BBEG immune to energy, as direct damage spells are among the most fun and most balanced spells in the game. Maybe give your BBEG resistances to energy if one of your PCs can do a ton of elemental damage, but making it immune will just encourage your players to use the more overpowered spells if they don't already. I agree with Tshern, don't use Mordenkainen's Disjunction unless your players do. Also, has your group ever played epic before? TS |
| The-Tortoise04-24-08, 12:49 AM | Thanks for the replies! My players have not finished rolling their characters yet, so I suppose I'll have to wait on that. Most of them have played epic a few times, but I think we have one to whom epic is completely new. I don't expect their characters to be terribly optimized (none of them are in our normal games, save one player), and their inexperience with epic levels as a whole will probably only serve to reduce their power level further. I am intending to start the game off with relatively low CR monsters, mostly to gauge the power level/effectiveness of the party. I was thinking of starting them off with an Uvuudaum, mostly because I think they're badass, even if CR 27 is a little on the low side. I don't, however, want to party-wipe them on their first encounter. Is this a reasonable strategy? A good CR to start out with for an unseasoned party (for epic, that is)? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! |

That doesn't sound so bad, though it is very possible that the new guy will be left in the dust even if the others don't optimize too much. Epic play is very sensitive to differences in optimization. Some players like it that way but I wrote my own Epic Level Handbook (http://lucasbuchanan.com/Dungeons & Dragons) for players like me who like to keep a vaguely even playing field. If you're interested, take a look. /end shameless self promotion I am intending to start the game off with relatively low CR monsters, mostly to gauge the power level/effectiveness of the party. Perhaps instead of worrying about your PCs being TPKed during the first fight, simply provide them with an easy way to escape if they get hosed. This could be as simple as having them fight a mindless monster in an arena that said monster won't leave or it could be a scroll of teleport. TS |
| rob_douglas04-25-08, 12:09 AM | My biggest recommendation would be to not use only a single BBEG. Make them a pair - somethings that can do more than one action, support each other, etc. You can do a BBEG with a couple of minions to keep the fighters off him, or a pair that support each other, or one that buffs the main one - like a bard paired with a dragon. I planned to use a Sorcerer on a Shadow Dragon, where the Shadow Dragon was the real power behind everything. So the sorcerer would just handle buffing. Spellcasters are tough, but a pair of Hunefer Wizard21 or Cleric21s (or 1 of each) would give you 2 CR35 epic spellcasters. I see them as an ancient king and queen. Give them a few greater mummy minions, and make sure they use greater spell immunity sunburst/sunbeam. But in any case, pairs are definitely better at this level - otherwise you could get hit by the whole party before you even get to go. ROB |

I was thinking of Scorching Ray twinks going nova. As in, a Maximized (from a rod of greater maximize) Twinned Repeated Energy Substituted Scorching Ray paired with a Quickened (from a greater rod of greater quicken) Twinned Repeated Energy Substituted Scorching Ray. That's 48d6+288 elemental damage across 24 ranged touch attack rolls over two rounds, and Greater Celerity allows you to get in another Quickened Twinned Energy Substituted Scorching Ray and a Maximized Twinned Energy Substituted Scorching Ray (another 12 ranged touch attacks dealing 24d6+144 in the first round, totaling 72d6+432 elemental damage in two rounds, averaging 342 hp per round). If my mat his right, that's four 9th level spells and an 8th level spell in one round, at the cost of being winded for round 2. Actually, at epic levels that's not too broken. Instead, watch out for the epic spells. A lot of groups ban them outright. Okay, MDJ might just be the least popular spell in the game. |
| Nezkrul04-25-08, 03:53 PM | a 400 hit die Colossal+ Gelatinous Cube - with a bunch of templates. |
| rob_douglas04-26-08, 12:28 AM | Just watch out for Infinite Deflection and Exceptional Deflection and Reflect Arrows - otherwise you fry yourself in 1 round! ROB |

As in, a Maximized (from a rod of greater maximize) Twinned Repeated Energy Substituted Scorching Ray paired with a Quickened (from a greater rod of greater quicken) Twinned Repeated Energy Substituted Scorching Ray. <snip> That's non-epic thinking. Against a CR 40, they're probably around ECL 30 at least, so a pure wizard would already have, oh, 15th level slots and 2x multispell, off the top of my head. That's twinned Maw of Chaos + 3x quickened Maw of Chaos, or 150d6/round for 30 rounds. 525 untyped per round. So, yeah... give the bbeg chaotic subtype. |
| elondir04-30-08, 08:57 AM | Yeah I'm used to non-epic DMing. Kid stuff compared to epic spells and 15th level spells. |
| Nezkrul05-05-08, 12:56 AM | No one likes the unholy cube of death-by-jello suggestion? :D |
| elondir05-05-08, 01:25 PM | Sounds interesting, but how does one play such a thing? Hrmm, could work. Especially if it's awakened with enough psion levels to go nova. You just gave me an idea: an awakened mindrape living spell that has enslaved an army of other awakened living spells, a few villages, and is seeking a means to mass-duplicate itself and disseminate itself across the multiverse. FYI, mindrape, in a standard action, gives you complete freedom to do whatever you want with the mind of the target. You learn everything they know, and you can totally reprogram their memories, personality, etc., and you can leave them anywhere from totally insane to completely unaware they've been "hacked." |

To those who don't know what Mindrape does, or the meaning of the word Disseminate, that would have sounded rather dirty... My contribution: Living spell: Vengeful Gaze of God. ... ... En Mass. |
| elondir05-05-08, 04:37 PM | The trouble with that is the backlash. Wouldn't the spells kill themselves? Maybe a custom version that does fewer dice, but uses d20s for the same damage, with no backlash. And would it have to make a spellcraft check to cast itself? |
| ikki05-05-08, 05:53 PM | a 400 hit die Colossal+ Gelatinous Cube - with a bunch of templates. Oh yes... a awakened cube.. (a real stackmonster did the awakeing) HD 4(?)+150*2 = 300+ At ~180hp/hd thanks to some awesome +300 CON epic spell INT 18*150 = 2700 Wiz 15/Acm5/Spelldancer 1 "Shake it baby!" "Im supersmart, way above you all" "take this.. arcane fire at 105d6" A ton of epic spells too, and any number of lesser simulcras.. just to assist on epic spells |
| elondir05-06-08, 09:10 AM | Oh, a thought occured to me. Give him a dimensional anchor that can't be dispelled. Also make him immune to positive and negative energy so that death by awesome can't be employed. I'm guessing that he's the endgame BBEG, not a recurring villain at this point, so I'll assume this is the be-all-end-all battle. The general idea is to make the battle last ten rounds, and put up enough of a fight that it feels like a first level encounter, but set up his stats such that the odds are actually in the PCs favor just barely enough that they still have a chance even with bad dice rolling. Before the battle, buff up and form a shield of minions spaced out enough that the wizard doesn't toast them all in the first round. In round 1 debuff the characters (not MDJ). In the next few rounds pull out the big guns, but don't go nova, and don't use your biggest gun yet. Pull out an epic heal spell (the 3.0 version of heal as a quickened or immediate action) if your hp get in the yellow (read: PCs can kill in the next round) before round 6. After round 6, go nova instead and go out in a blaze of glory, hoping that some PCs go down with you. In round 5, do something to surprise your players. Change tactics, transform, pull out some bigger guns, I don't know. Mix it up with something they don't expect, that scares the crap out of your players. Make them think they're going to die. Don't kill them outright, though. Just make them think that to raise tension. |
| Starmage2105-10-08, 02:18 PM | Fighter 45, perfect two-weapon fighting, a couple of daggers, and a few non-epic items that emulate some useful spells. If he doesnt melt at least 1 player/round, youre doing it wrong. |
| elondir05-12-08, 11:51 AM | Okay, I gotta hear the tactics for that one. |
| Asra05-13-08, 09:41 AM | You just gave me an idea: an awakened mindrape living spell that has enslaved an army of other awakened living spells, a few villages, and is seeking a means to mass-duplicate itself and disseminate itself across the multiverse. As a cohort you could give it an awakened Magical Disjunction! |
