Different grades of Epic? [Archive] - Wizards Community

It seems like there are a couple possible "epic" settings.

One lets characters go to 30th level or thereabouts. In this kind of world, the official gods and archfiends can be used as presented. Characters can still be mighty, but there are limits to the powers of any mere mortal. This is my personal preference (advancement past 30th being in the form of divine ascension).

Another possibility is setting the limit higher (50th-100th level). In this category, the statistics from Dicefreaks are good choices for gods and cosmic beings. (Or, just add 20 or more class levels, epic feats, etc. ...) In this kind of setting, limits exist, but will almost never be reached.

Finally, a setting is possible with no limits, when mortals can challenge and defeat even the mightiest gods.

Any thoughts?

In a standard setting, there are no limits, but the experience system automatically creates an informal cap.

It happens that due to the existing cosmology, it becomes difficult or just impossible to gain experience at a certain point, because opponents are either too weak (most other mortals) or impossible to defeat (other deities).

In such a situation, a character would generally stop gaining experience until they somehow ascend to divinity and enter a whole new playing field, where they can actually gain experience from from difficult challenges.

Personally, I've never found a setting with the official stats for archfiends viable unless deities are restatted lower, as well.

However, I think an essential version of Epic that shouldn't be forgotten is the one that is almost uncapped, by Upper Krust :)

Hey guys! :)

I think the power of the archfiends (the perennial villains) in your campaign is a good parallel to what you consider "epic".

For some that will be 20th-level (Fiendish Codex). For others 30th (Book of Vile Darkness/Demonomicon articles) and others still perhaps 60th (Deities & Demigods/Dicefreaks/Immortals Handbook) or higher.
