| jonnyrue2u06-15-07, 11:42 AM | With Spell, Magic Item, and soon to be Rule Compendium books, one would think that Wizards wouldn't stop there. It's just MY idea, and hopeful to think, that a much needed Epic book is needed, and what better way to fuel more intrest back into the game. My hope is that if they would come out with this, they would revamp the system, and scale it correctly to suit the more powerful equipment and abilities. This would be one book that I would love to put on my shelf. Remember: This is just my idea and nothing has been announced from WotC. |
| Jersey Cowboy06-15-07, 11:50 AM | So something like the Epic Level Handbook? I hope that updated Epic rules will appear in the Rules Compendium, but I doubt we'll see an updated Epic handbook. |
| Amaril06-15-07, 05:11 PM | I have to admit, I was never for a redux of the Epic Level Handbook, but this idea seems more plausible. Collect all of the Epic material from the various books, including the 3.5 updates, toss in the Epic Insight articles from the D&D Web site, and publish them in a single book. Not a bad compromise. |
| Zuxius06-15-07, 05:35 PM | Hate to say, but Feat and Prestige Class Compendium sound about right. I might also add that bands usually release their greatest hits albums just before they break up. They really don't have records on the horizon because there is no point (no one feels compelled or creative), the sales of previous records are diminishing, but the bands bills keep coming in so they think they may as well cash in one last time on their cow before they split. Such is the end of 3rd Edition. Cheers, Zuxius |

| Zuxius06-15-07, 11:45 PM | Well, when you see the meteor in the sky it is time to stop scoffing at the idea, especially when you no longer need a scientist to point it out. But sure, there are fools that have been saying this for years with no grounds. I of course can see everyone scrambling for cover, why are the rest of you still going about as if nothing is going to happen. You really should listen closely to the Dragon pulling in his breath, just before he billows at the firestorm. To keep it on topic though, if you look at what is being released in the next 6 months, it hasn't a shred of the staple books (Complete, Enviromental, Tome of, Races of, Book of). We got evil this and evil that, survivor guide and some rules and a dice game. These are last gasp books and gimmicks which almost seem disconnected from the usual lot. Besides the point though, I am sure they reading these ideas. I am also sure that this idea deserves as much credit as any other, but I just don't see it anymore. Everyone was complaining about not having enough adventures some year and a half ago, I think that thought is getting to print at the end of the journey Mr. Frodo. Cheers, Zuxius |
| Amaril06-15-07, 11:56 PM | I wasn't arguing whether your perceptions were inaccurate or flawed. I was merely stating that it was off-topic. |
| Airos06-17-07, 09:31 AM | To keep it on topic though, if you look at what is being released in the next 6 months, it hasn't a shred of the staple books (Complete, Enviromental, Tome of, Races of, Book of). Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with the ones we just got in the last four months, could it? (Dungeonscape in February, Complete Champion and Drow of the Underdark in May). Give them some time to finish up the next Complete "Fighter" book. It'll be out soon enough. Pick up your copy of Monster Manual V next month, that's "staple" isn't it? What gets me is that if they crank out books like that every couple of months, they're flooding the market with garbage, and people can't afford to keep up even if they wanted to. If they don't publish a "core" book every month, it's the end of D&D. And I have no idea what a "book of" is supposed to be. You mean the Book of Vile Darkness and Book of Exalted Deeds? The stand alone books detailing the most extreme ends of the good and evil alignments? Yeah, sure, let's keep with the naming of the books after major artifacts... let's see.... Ah, yeah, Book of Infinite Pages, nobody will be disappointed with that one. (My copy's broken, it's only got 150 pages in it!) And what would you put in it? How to play the most extreme neutral character in the world? (Hmmm...., it's Tuesday, so today I do.... nothing!) Something tells me there's more than a few people around here that would actually pay money for that book, too...:nonono: |

Book of refers to subtitles of books such as Draconomicon: Book of Dragons, Libris Mortis: Book of Undead, and Lords of Madness: Book of Aberrations, but as you mentioned, we recently had Drow of the Underdark, which is part of that series. |
| TheDarkWolf06-17-07, 07:43 PM | And hey why not include Epic prestige classes that aren't made anywhere? And maybe a few epic adventures. :-) or at least plot hooks for them. heh |
| Krispieman06-21-07, 11:26 AM | I don't think an Epic Compendium would offer much, except maybe for those who previously had no epic aspirations. My main reason for thinking so is that the epic system, at current, is flawed. There are way to many little (and very big) errors, mainly on the issue of balance. While I fully support new epic material, I'd much rather see a "Complete Epic" or "Heroes of Legend" or "Expanded Epics" or whatever fancy name the guys at WotC can come up with, that provides updated and expanded epic rules and material, instead of a compilation of all the stuff that would hardly fill a book worth the cost of printing. If you need more than just my POV (see also the 2nd link at the top of my sig.), come visit the Epic Forum. K-man  |

| Sleepwalker1366606-23-07, 06:35 AM | I'm not a fan of epic as written, but if they printed an update i would definitely buy it. |
| jonnyrue2u06-23-07, 10:17 AM | Yes. 3.0 epic is flawed as well as the 3.5 "update", but I was thinking of if they did actually take the time to make it actually good and plausable (would take a madman, at best), then I would shell out that money for a good book. It's very hypothetical and hopeful to think, but I would like to see that actually happen. |

Yeah, I like the idea, but the book really deserved better treatment than it got, it could be so much better. |
| Stormonu07-02-07, 05:11 PM | I wish they'd redo epic with a linear progression, instead of exponential. But with so much of the epic stuff of late coming down to the regular levels of play (Two-weapon Rend and the like), it sure seems like epic is being abandoned. Personally, I think the spell seeds is one of the things from epic that needs most to be updated and revised. The rules from spell seeds ought to work on spells from 1st-nth level, and I'd love to see spell seeds in use in the regular game, allowing characters to build their own customized spells without having to rely on metamagic (which is crap anyways under the current system). |

In short, you want to be playing Mage: the Awakening. Ascension (its predecessor) and Ars Magica proved that model has far-reaching consequences D&D isn't built for. I love Mage, but D&D can't handle Paradox. |
| Stormonu07-02-07, 05:59 PM | In short, you want to be playing Mage: the Awakening. I hate mage, for my own reasonings. I do think, however, that the Spell Seeds would be a wonderful way to helping folks make new spells or tweaking existing spells without having to make 10,000 variations of basically the same spell. For example, I'd like to see there be a basic Fireball spell, and then with a few tweaks you could downgrade it to "Fire Blast", affecting only a 5 ft. radius, bump it up to Delayed Blast Fireball or Meteor Swarm levels without having to physically have different spells or use metamagic to reproduce it. Same for things like the Web, Evard's Black Tentacles & Forcecage or Charm Person/Charm Monster/Dominate Person/Dominate Monster - each comes from the base spell (something that inhibits/captures foes for Web, a charm/control spell for the Charm/Dominate series) and then just tweak slightly at different levels for different effects. Yeah, it's ripe for abuse, but so is just about everything in D&D too... |

(Well, the rules side of it also wants the pool modifiers and additional effects, but it's still the most elegant solution out there.) |
| Razz07-02-07, 10:32 PM | Fat chance in all Nine Hells they'll publish another Epic book. They haven't even published epic material in their recent products...and even Dragon Magazine hasn't published any epic material in their magazine for years. Psionics is the biggest niche material out there, and it's only because it has precedents since 1st Edition. Epic material is a much smaller niche, unfortunately. Heck, it might even be smaller than Incarnum. The funny thing is, epic level is inevitable in all D&D games. You're going to always have players that want that extra step beyond 20th level, that will want to explore what's beyond 20th level, and you're going to have your DMs who'll want to do it. Epic level also has precedents in past editions (anyone remember that 100th-level adventure?). It will always be there, but it will always be the slave child to D&D that gets only bread crumbs leftover from all the other material...and that's IF they can manage to fight over the bread crumbs from the psionic material. I would have to say is the biggest problem with the lack of Epic material is the epic players themselves. There're many out there. Hell, even the designers themselves run epic games. It's the fault of the epic players because not ALL of them are speaking out for more epic material. Only very few of us who have an epic game or allow the game to go past 20th level speak out. The rest are silent on the matter. |

Please forgive the brand for trying to remain financially viable. |

I don't know if this was brought up (I've been away from the boards recently), but did anyone else notice the sheer volume of novels that they're churning out this year? Something like, I dunno, 70? I wonder where their head's at. |

| Grandmaster_Kane07-06-07, 12:34 PM | When i opened this i was really hoping for a epic spell compendium or something |
