I've been trying to struggle through an idea I had for dragon PC's in Eberron, playing agents of the Chamber helping to unveil the Draconic Prophecy. Basically, my problem is that I want to play dragons older than juvenile, but I don't know how I'm supposed to do it. I've tried finding formulas for increased level adjustment, but many of the true dragons don't fit a pattern. I read an online game character creation instruction saying that dragons could play there at an age of at least Old, but their number of free class levels were lessened by the dragon's Challenge Rating +1. I didn't understand this, really, so I'm looking for other avenues.

start with the highest level adjustment printed

every age category above and beyond is +1 LA

each hit die is of course a level.

when your PC dragon has enough hit dice to be in the next age category, the next level he gains gets him the benefits of the age category(increased size, sorcerer spellcasting, breath attacks and whatnot).

That seems to make sense, thank you for your help!

That is actually a little high. It is +1 per 2 age categories.

Silver dragon is:

Dragon ECLs

Silver

Age
Category LA HD ECL Source
1 +4 7 11 Monster Manual
2 +4 10 14 Monster Manual
3 +5 13 18 Monster Manual
4 +5 16 21
5 +6 19 25
6 +6 22 28
7 +7 25 32
8 +7 28 35
9 +8 31 39
10 +8 34 42 Epic Level Update booklet
11 +9 37 46
12 +9 40 49

A Red would be the same as a Silver. Some smaller ones would be a little different.
[Edit: Well a Red should be the same, but it isn't. I don't understand some of them,
and I think the Green is way overrated for its LA, but in general once you get going,
use +1 per 2 age categories. Otherwise, it is too much.]
