| Krispieman05-09-07, 09:37 AM | While working on an NPC for my Epic campaign I came upon a few items I was unsure of exactly how to price. It regards: A +5 Devil (evil & lawful Outsider) Bane Silver Longsword of Brilliant Energy And a +5 Bashing Spiked (+5) Light Steel Shield I broke them down as follows: Longsword: +315 Silver: +90 +5 Enhancement: 50.000 Evil Outsider Bane: +1 Lawful Outsider Bane: +1 Briliant Energy: +4 This gives a total enhancement modifier of +11 (epic) but no epic abilities. So would the final cost be 242.405 or 2.240.405gp? I think the former as there is no single bonus that would 'trigger' the standard epic x10 pricing. The same goes for the shield: Light steel: +159 Spiked: +10 +5 Enhancement: 25.000 Bashing: +1 +5 Enhancement on Spikes: 50.000 So would this cost 86.169gp or something totally different? Perhaps one of you could check my math and point out if I went wrong (and where). Thanks in advance. K-man  |

I think the former as there is no single bonus that would 'trigger' the standard epic x10 pricing. It is the second one. Epic weapon pricing kicks in when the total enhancement value of the weapon exceeds +10, or any single ability has a value of +6 or more. You might want to drop the enhancement bonus to +4 to keep it within the +10 limit. |
| Krispieman05-09-07, 06:07 PM | Epic weapon pricing kicks in when the total enhancement value of the weapon exceeds +10Going by the ELH (p. 123) an item is epic when it: Grants a bonus on attacks or damage greater than +5. Gants an enhancement bonus to armor higher than +5. Has a special ability with a market price modifier greater than +5. Grants an armor bonus of greater than +10 (not including magic armor's enhancement bonus). Has a market price above 200.000gp, not including [stuff] The only one of these which would apply to my items is the one about cost, and I think we can all agree that that won't trigger the x10 pricing. Otherwise, there would be no items costing between 200.001 and 1.999.999gp :P. Now if I look at page 124, under the heading of Market Price it says: "If your item gives a bonus beyond the limit allowed in the Dungeon Master's Guide, multiply the portion of the market price derived from that characteristic by 10." This would mean that only the "final" +1 for the weapon would be priced tenfold. The formule for weapons is: (bonus[squared]*2000), so a +11 would be (11*11*2000=) 242.000gp, meaning that the "final" +1 = 42.000gp, and according to the above quote would trigger a tenfold. Giving us a final price of 200.000 (+10) + 420.000gp (+11th) + 405 = 620.405gp Still more than my origional thought, but I'm still confused as now I've got multiple "rulings" on what exactly constitutes the x10. Damned Epic pricing rules. Just when I think I've finally figured them out, they get all screwy again. K-man  |
| Yodasatomicweed05-09-07, 06:29 PM | I believe the sword counts as a +11 weapon, making it epic. A +11 weapon costs 2,420,000 gp, because +11 is greater than the non-epic limit. As for the shield...I believe you priced it right. The enchanted spikes count as a seperate weapon for pricing purposes, I believe, and the enhancement bonus on the shield itself doesn't affect the enhancement on the spikes in any way, shape, or form. So it's a +6 shield and a +5 weapon...36,000 + 50,000 = 86,000 (disregarding the cost for masterwork), meaning that you had it right. |
| bluemage5505-09-07, 06:36 PM | A +10 equivalent bonus is set by the non-epic Magic Items Section, so it stands to reason that any weapon or armor with +11 or greater equivalent bonus triggers epic item pricing. |
