Hi,

I've never worked out Epic progression for a PrC before but now a player in my game needs this info from me. I have an idea in mind but before I commit to it I'd like to hear from someone else how they believe this would work. Ty for any input!

*cracks open CAdv*
Detect Evil: Doesn't change
Sacred Stealth: Increases again at 13th, 20th, 27th, etc.
Discover Subterguge: Increases again at 11th, 14th, 17th, 20th, etc.
Sneak Attack: Increases again at 12th, 15th, 18th, 21st, etc.
Sacred Defense: Doesn't change
Sacred Strike: Doesn't change
There already 5 levels behind on casting, so give them full casting from 10th, which should balance out the loss of a few class features. Maybe one bonus feat/4 levels?

Sneak attack every 3 levels: 12, 15, 18...
Discover Subterfuge, +2/3 levels: 11, 14, 17, 20
Sacred Stealth +4/6 levels: 13, 19
Spells at every level except 14, 19, 24, 29, etc.

Bonus feat every 5 levels.

But, they should get to 20th level casting by level 22 or so of the class. After that all that matters is caster level, so youre basically just forcing them to take Practiced Spellcaster if they want to stay competitive. Why not just deduct one feat every 20 levels and give them good spellcasting?

Why not give bladesingers full casting? Because they don't have it pre-epic. If they get full casting post epic, they are just as good a progression as straight cleric. They are supposed to mix magic and stealth.

Thank you both. That's almost exactly what we had in mind but I think we missed the SS at 19 and I hadn't thought of skipping caster levels. Bonus feat per 5 lvls might be more reasonable but I'm gonna go every 4. It's a tough campaign and this particular character could benefit with a slight boost.

Thank you very much both of you!

It's just caster level! If they don't get it they will be very far behind at high levels.

I know, but you could use that argument for why the High Prostelytzer should get full casting, or the Cosmic Descryer. It does seem that the Epic rules writers didn't realize how important caster level was after 20th - they seem to think that once you get all the spells you need, caster level is a secondary concern. The Char Op people will tell you, as is written in the 10 commandments of optimization, never to give up caster level.

I sometimes think the most fair thing would be to cap caster level bonuses to 1/2 levels after 20th, like BAB. It would have the same effect - keeping people close after 20th level. A 30th level wizard would be caster level 25. A 30th level paladin would be 15. A Ftr4/Wiz6/Bladesinger20 would be caster level 16.

But anyway, to the case in point, I still think that caster level should follow pre-epic patterns. I know, the Spellsword doesn't lose 1 every 10 levels. Certainly the 1/2 casters continue to lose caster level, but what to do with 3/4 casters, or better 8/10.

I guess I would be ok with full caster and bonus feats every 5, or 8/10 caster and bonus feats every 4.
