| Dark Prince Illazar02-26-07, 06:27 AM | I am currently trying to figer out if i want to allow epic spell casting or just extent the creat new spells section in the DMG to make spells of lvl 10 and higher plz give your thoughts and resons on both thank you |

| Mist of Shadows02-26-07, 06:13 PM | Epic spells in a lot of ways are how magic should have worked in the first place. Not the whole I pay insane amounts of gold but the hey I stick this with this to make this type of effect. It's a system where you can create some very interesting spell effects but for a terrible price.. most of your characters money he has spent years gathering... Think about what he is giving up, a feat... thousands of gold at the minmum more likely 10's to hundereds of thousands of gold. All to do something that he otherwise couldn't. It gives the magic user the chance to say i paid in blood all of those levels so I can do this. He might only have a few spells but it has been my experience that if you make him work hard for his spells he will enjoy them all the more. If you just extend the spells there isn't much you can't do with a wish.. There is a point when you have to either leave it to epic metamagic or call mortal magic done and let them try to build their own spells. It cheapens magic to just continue the normal spells. Imo |

| Tequila_Sunrise02-28-07, 10:01 PM | Epic spellcasting can work, but it takes a lot of work on the DM's part. If you already have a good grip on regular spells, I'd just continue with them past 9th level. |
| fatchuck03-01-07, 01:18 PM | As others have already said, Epic Spellcasting requires even more work for the DM to account for on top of everything else you have to do to run a fun and interesting campaign. BUT, I think my DM handled it very well... My PC is a level 23 Favored Soul in a party with a Sorceror/Incantatrix, Rogue, and Barbarian (all L23). When we got to level 17 or so, our DM pulled me and the girl playing the Sorceror aside and gave us a choice. He said we could use Epic Spells with all-new effects and plan out the feats and requirements for our characters to do this by level 21, or we could forgo Epic Spells and use the 10th+ level slots for metamagic effects on existing level 1-9 spells. Whatever we chose would also apply to future NPCs who regularly outranked us by 3-8 levels (depending on creature LA). After talking about it, Marie and I decided to go the metamagic route (no epic spells) and it's worked out very well - especially since we haven't sacrificed a ton of gold and XP to develop unique epic spells when we can instead be casting 3-4 spells per round, Wild West-style. It's also been good for the DM because now he doesn't have to spend the extra time to research which epic spells his BBEG would have. I strongly recommend going the metamagic route since it's far easier to ramp up past level 20, and it doesn't force your DM to spend even more time creating NPCs that can cast Epic Spells (on top of everything else he has to do). |
