You have been given 4 *epic* wishes and the DM announces he'll be very liberal in what he grants. What do you ask for?

I'm thinking...

1. All of my PC's caster classes have full level progression.
2. +20 to Caster Level for overcoming SR and such OR applying ECL instead of Caster Level if ECL is much much higher (i.e. Demi-lich)
3. Spells that normally took a standard action be treated as swift action.
4. ???

The last time he did this we ended up with a few characters with stats in the 70's, so think BIG!

Ask for a better DM.
NoldorForce

02-23-07, 11:41 AM
-The reptilian subtype
-DM assurance that you are in fact a native of Toril
-Manipulate Form at will

There, now you have all the necessary ingredients to become Pun-Pun. Game over, you win.

More seriously, I'd like to second bluemage55's suggestion.

1)Paragon template.
2)no LA.

in place of your 3 and 4.

Instead of your 3, take the Automatic Quicken feat chain.

I don't agree with the Better Dm bit
just remember- the stronger you get (through any means), the stronger your opposition will become.

just remember- the stronger you get (through any means), the stronger your opposition will become.

That doesn't justify arbitrary increases in ability.

Are you saying that Pun-pun is okay because your opponents will be Pun-pun caliber too?

As far as I know, things like that ruin the game.
Selgard

02-23-07, 12:15 PM
Pun-pun, no.. but presumably the DM is the DM, and if he's issued this sort of offering to the characters then he knows what he (or she) is getting into.

Trying to break the game, as with Pun-pun, is a different suggestion than merely trying to take 4 wishes to do what the DM is suggesting- to give yourself 4 boons, the likes of which you otherwise wouldn't be able to receive.

Rather than "breaking the game" through Punpun or the like, I would take my suggestion, or those of the others who gave actual useful information (such as boosting Spellcraft, etc..)

the DM saying "you get a couple of liberal wishes" doesn't necessarily equate to "I, the DM, don't know what I'm doing. Please break the game."

How bout getting a some or a bunch of feats for free? Like say... any number of the autometamagics, multispell, increased spell capacity....or something

Or perhaps a discount that reduces the time, money, and xp cost for epic spells...kind of like the Netherese Arcanist Epic PrC from one of the Forgotten Realms supplement books...

Uh, think bigger? Our demi-lich actually acended to godhood by one such wishes. He's only a minor deity, but he's "thinking bigger" and is currently off building his own world in a pocket plane he created.

No, that sounds like it might be fun. It's very important to have a DM who's not a jerk.

Not all D&D play has to be within the rigid confines of a planned adventure.

Depends on the meaning of "Liberal". If it's not very liberal, do this.
1) Wish for any wish to be accepted thereafter.
2) Wish for infinite epic wishes.
3[Not actually a single wish]) Cause mass chaos, with the only limit being the boundaries of the planes(which are infinite, and therefore do not exist.).

In other words, you have a simple recipe to ruin a game in 2 Epic wishes, unless you can do wish 2 first. Yes, I feel kind of low for the infinite wishes cop-out, but, yeah, if your DM actually said this, pray to the god of your real AND D&D Cleric's religions that he's kidding. If he isn't, follow the above pattern, and count how many wishes it takes for your DM to feel ashamed/imbecilic/embarrased/outright pathetic.
Edit: I'm actually surprised no one ELSE suggested the infinite one, myself.

You say that you want something bigger than becoming gods, yet don't know what Automatic Quicken Spell does. In that case I am confused about the power level and rules you might be using, and not sure what kind of help this board can be. As a god, you could have access to Alter Reality, which basically allows you to Wish at will.

If you aren't using the Epic Level Handbook, then the guidelines for what power level you have are limited. And then there is the question of "What do you want?" That is usually how wishes are designed to be granted - to give you what you want in your heart's deepest desire. If your DM is competent, and honestly can handle the liberal epic wish, then what he wants to do is explore that in a role-playing fashion, and wants to hear what you would do if you could literally have anything.

Are you a real hero - Do you want all the demon lords and archdevils to surrender to your power?

Are you greedy - do you want access to all the treasures of the world/multiverse - maps of them, or keys to bypass every trap?

Are you lonely? So you want the perfect companion, who will anticipate your needs, and protect you?

Who are you? What do you want? And what are you willing to do to get it? Those are the three basic questions of developing a character's personality. If you know those answers, you will know what to wish for.

This is actually a fun exercise, regardless of who the DM is and what power level they play. People play this game for fun, what is fun for you might not be fun for someone else. So...just have fun with this, who cares who the DM is. In fact, I'm going to pretend that bluemage is my DM.

3 wishes

-omniscience
-Magic Immunity
-Tarrasque's regeneration

Gaining everything else from here on out would be the fun part. Strike down either elminster or laroch depending on alignment. It would be much easier with the above abilities. Sure, I wouldn't be invincible, but hey bluemage is my DM so there are limits :)

In my opinion, your DM seems to know what he is doing. Either a) he/she plans on ending the campaign upon receiving these boons or b) he/she has BIG plans in store for your PCs. In the later case, things will not be easy or pleasant from here on in.

When my ex tried her hand at DMing, she let me get away with this wish: (my PC was a Cleric of Kord)
"I wish to gain the benefits as if my character had gone from Medium-size to Colossal-size without altering my shape or form"

The end result was (I believe) +32 to STR, +16 CON, and I could lift what a Colossal-size creature could lift/carry with my new strength:P ...however I gave her some advice (due to the power of the wish) that I should also take the penalty to DEX, AC, Attack, and that I would have to learn how to use and control my new found strength. Handshakes and pats on the back where rare for a while.

You only need one wish.

"I wish for complete and utter control of my own destiny."

Of course if you were my PC and wished for the above, I would simply hand the DM's Screen to you.

Quite simple really

1. I can gain 1 xp for every power point that I spend as an ability similar to the elan's damage reducing ability (this also lets me create items for free
2. I have a feat called break the rules that allows me to take any feat or skill reguardless of requirements (all skills are also class skills to me)

At this point I have the following thanks to infinite power points

Infinite stats
Infinite PP
Infinite HP
Infinite AC
Infinite Saves
Infinite Save DC's
Infinite Manifester Level
Infinite PP cap (Manifester Level)
Infinite Lifting capacity
Infinite DR/-
Infinite Fast Healing
Infinite Powers Per Round

Pretty much infinite everything (not limitless, infinite)

Bring it Pun-Pun...

Now if I wanted to have fun

1. My powers cost no pp to manifest and are augmented to normal maximum capability but I may spend pp to augment them further with no limit (I can nova and even salvage a TPK if I have to).
2. I wish to have the chosen abilities of the following monsters: tarrasque (regeneration), lich (immunities this includes its immunities for being undead), choker (quickness)
3. I wish for the ability to learn and use spells with pp as I can use my powers. The learning process is called scribing to memory and requires 1 minute for every level of the spell (10 for epic level spells). Spells can be augmented by pp past their normal limits by dictating that spending 1 pp increases my Caster Level by 1.
4. I wish for the the ability to always be considered as having psionic focus even if I don't (this means I can apply all my feats reguardless of psionic focus).

That would be fun and not game breaking unless I wanted it to be. (inf pp then nova with no limits etc...)

EDIT: I can die but its difficult, regeneration means I take non-lethal damage from everything, but I have immunity to non-lethal damage... The only way I could die is from flesh to stone spells and such. Even life and death from a deity couldn't kill my char.

Although I agree that your DM sounds like a little kid with no concept of game mechanics, I'd wish for:
1) Unkillability by any means (or a method of automatically resurrecting even if the soul is captured and the body disintigrated; something like an Uber-Phylactery)
2) Rulership of a plane, not just a demiplane (or atleast a high station in the hierarchy of my plane of choice)
3) Primus calls a Modron March. I tag along as they pass through the lower planes and take pictures using an improvised power or spell as the modrons try to trample the Princes (a picture of Mephistopheles trying to get out from under a hundred modrons would be comedic, as I imagine it). If the princes are caught off-guard, I'd go ahead and pwn all of them, either wrecking the lower planes or taking control of them (depending on the character's alignment).
4) A copy of D&D Minis for my character (in-game) so he can better organize his many sorties now that he possesses the means to conquer the universe.

I think I might actually ask some artist friends to do that modrons-marching-over-Meph picture. ;)

Omnipotence?

Or how about no XP, gold, material, or time costs for item creation. With that, you could make any item you want. You could make a staff of Wish and cast it as many times as you want.

Or how about just infinite spell slots and no XP or matierial costs for casting.

1. Divine Rank 0 or paragon template applied without LA.
2. Any spell/feat or class feature that requires expenditure of experience points, doesn't any more.
3. Bonuses of the same type DO combine (stack) for you, and/or immunity to body slot limitations.
4. "Borrow SA/SQ" You can, as a free action, borrow any special or extraordinary feature from any creature or class that you've encontered, in place of one of your own. Got a crowd - Use the Great Wyrm's Frightful Presence. When not using anything else, borrow a Titan's immunity to age. Retain the Rakasha's immunity to magic. Whatever.

1. New Epic material from WotC.
2. Tarrasque's Regeneration (I know someone suggested it already, but I really like it)
3. Not being affected by antimagic fields.
4. Mind control over the rest of your party :D.

Why bother when you can ask for Omnipotence?

My four wishes:
1: that no gods would directly or indirectly interfere with me until I have used my last wish and that no beings other than me remember that the wishes have been granted as soon as the last one has been made.
2: that my body would be capable of carrying nigh-infinite amounts of divine power without failing or warping.
3: that my mind would be able of carrying nigh-infinite amounts of divine power without failing or warping.
4: that I would be delivered as much divinity as the wish could grant without mind or body failing or warping.

A being that shows the imperfection of Wizards design, which shows that overoptimization destroys games, and which manages to distinguish the DMs with even a mere bit of spine from those with absolutely none.

Most people use it as an example to point out that the RAW as written isn't perfect. Other people worship it.

It's a build that can get every single imaginable ability and divine rank, infinite ability scores, infinite reach etcetera, all within the rules, and by first level.

I'm not familiar with the Automatic Quicken feat chain. What book is it from and how does it work (besides the obvious)?

Three stacking copies of Automatic Quicken Spell from the ELH, supplemented
by as many iterative stacking copies of the Multispell feat as you wish for?
Basically allows you to cast all of your spells (pre-epic) 0-9th as free actions
at least twice a round (or more if you have additional copies of Multispell).

It's been argued that this is greatly broken, however considering you would
burn through virtually all of your spells in a few rounds time doing that...

Ummm... that really shouldn't work, since I'm pretty sure Swarms are treated as a single critter, at least in some regards. I'd certainly treat them as such for this exercise, especially since BoVD and the hive rules therein are 3.0, and Swarms are 3.5, so there's a good chance the two aren't supposed to fit together in the say that's bering described.
