Hello All.

Is there a formula for calculating XP awards, given the enemy's CR and the party's level beyong level 40? The table at page 121 of the Epic Level Handbook stops at level 40 and I'm afraid in this scenario I devised we're going beyond. And I want a consistent way of handing out XP.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Kostas.

Reduce your party's level and the encounter level by 2 each until they are both below 40. For example, if you were level 50, reduce the EL by 10. Then take that amount of XP, and multiply it by party's level/reduced level. That's how much XP to award.

The formula is noted in the text about Experience on page 121 of the ELH (but watch out for the errata):

CR = Level-1 award 200*Level
CR = Level award 300*Level
CR = Level+1 award 400*Level

Then for every 2 CR above Level (or Level+1 depending on odd or even) award 2 times the XP.
For every 2 CR below Level (or Level-1 depending on odd or even) award 1/2 the XP.

So if a 93rd level party took on a CR100 Dragon, the XP would be:
93*400 = 37,200 for CR94. 100-94/2 = 3. 2^3 = 8. 8*37,600 = 297,600 XP to be divided by number of characters in the party. Of course you have to do this for all the character's levels, since the 3.0 rules used average party level, and now we use individual level.

The best thing to do is to put the numbers in a spreadsheet program and plug the formulas in and let them go from there....

Should come out the same, except at odd levels it gets a bit different. I'm pretty sure the XP chart up to 40 follows mine, but I could be wrong.

Look on the web for an 'Encounter EL & XP Calculator 4.01' it was designed by 'arcady'. Use to have a website of it, but that one went defunct. Luckily I saved a copy of the htm file so I can still use it. It handled that 93ECL Party versus 100CR Dragon just fine.

And a little Google-Fu later:

Its a bash background, the one I saved has a nice black one.

That one seems to be wrong in handling mixed parties. I put in a 93, 94, and 95 level party (once of each) and it awarded more XP to the 95 than the 93 for taking on a CR 100. I do love the features it offers though. [edit: Never mind, I see there is a CR based and a "Difficulty" based column. I was looking at the Difficulty, as it didn't work for CR100]

Bill - I don't understand your system. So for the 93rd level party vs 100 dragon, would you subtract 60, look up 33 vs. 40 and multiply by 93/33?

let's see:
105,600*93/33 = 297,600

- yep that's the same. Ok - I worked it out and see - the powers of 2 cancel each other as they are a function of the difference between the CR and Level - so when you take out all the constants, the only variables are the levels. Gotcha - that will work.

Sorry for my late reply. Thanks to all for your answers and silly me for not reading the ELH in more detail to find the answer right there, page 121, in the text under the table.

Cheers, Kostas.
