OK, here's my situation. I need to make a char that's ECL 35, and i'm totally stuck for ideas.

Could you please share with me your favourite epic chars, or even epic char you've always wanted to play. And why they are your favourite.

I'm looking for something that's fun to play. We're mainly using the core 3 (plus the ELH) but other books can be run past the DM, so post anything.

Hopefully if we get a big enough collection of chars it will help other players get a few ideas.

thanks

So you want to jack our characters that we have worked so hard to keep alive?

Now that I just can't do.

Maybe if you tell us what you want to do and a few guidelines we could help out.

lol, not exactly nick your ideas. But to see some examples of what other people play, and try to figure out what sort of Char to play.

I was thinking maybe an archer. But not sure what would make a good ECL 35 archer.

Or maybe Cleric, since our party has no divine caster and is lacking in terms of healing, but does 35 levels of cleric make a good char?

these are just simple possibilities considering all the combinations that there could be. Plus our DM is allowing a lot of MM races.

Anything can make a good character. Right now I am contemplating a nice Ultimate Magus - Sor5/Wizard5/UM20/Archmage5 would be 35 levels. Lots of spells per day, Practiced Spellcaster, and you should be able to pull off nearly 35th caster level in each.

For a cleric, Cleric30/Hierophant5 is good. Once you have a 17th level spell slot, you could always go for Innate Spell(Miracle) and tie on Quicken Spell-like Ability(Miracle) to that. You could also go down the Cosmic Descryer path with your cleric. Or you could combine cleric/paladin/divine emissary. Or High Prosteletyzer.

Or you could go melee, and play a fighter/legendary dreadnaught - maybe some berzerker, or paladin, or cavalier (maybe a dragon mount using dragon cohort feat - though if you go that way, go paladin/cavalier/divine Emissary to max out mount benefits. A dragon cohort/mount can be pretty powerful with epic leadership thrown in if needed.).

An archer - arcane archer or order of the bow? Make sure you get all kinds of swarm of arrows, and ability to fire arrows as AoOs and add in Improved Combat Reflexes. You still need some way to deal with reflection/defelection/wind wall. A little magic could help with that. Make special arrows that have area of effect abilities. I think Arcane Archer mixed with a pure caster at least until you get to 9th level spells could really work. Make it a Mystic Theurge (be a priest of Corellon Larethian, gray elf Wiz/cleric/AA/MT) for some fun.

There are just way too many options..... :)

When I'd first started playing 3.5 I played a Wizard 20/? Dragon Disciple 8 that was totally built for melee combat. He wasn't the most effective character around but he was sure fun to play. I mean really, how often do you see someone in robes dual-wielding katanas (yes I was in the 'katanas-R-kool' phase).

My favorite Epic character?

The one my Screen Name is named after of course.

I started him at level one in the two 2nd Edition campaigns I played in. He is a Human wizard and made it to about Wiz 12.

The Dark Lord Xerxiz Malahadromme Crucephylyzan: Subverter of the order of the Mighty Oak, Destroyer of the Great Tharienthias (elven) Forest, Corruptor of Elven Kind, Lord of the Silent Mystical Death.

Commonly known as "Him". This was the full title given by an Evil Bard.

Once I hit third edition I only got to play him a couple of times, one of those times was an Epic campaign and he finished up as a Wizard 30/Archmage 10/Citadel Mage 10.

Now since i've been DMing for (Forever it seems) a while, he's become the most poweful NPC on the Material Plane, he's no longer evil, and no longer has class HD, he's become a 60HD outsider with full spellcasting ability and a Divine Rank of 1. He's gone quite a bit off the hilt and is somewhat insane. He has a very bad case of OCD and will retaliate only when cornered, otherwise he's harmless.

Edit: And if he retaliates, he usually takes half the countryside with him.

This reminds me of a 2nd edition Mage I used to play.

Everybody says that spellcasters are the only way to go in epic levels, but I had a ton of fun with a minotaur "hulk smash" type of character in a level 30 game a while back.

Minotaur (6 HD, +2 LA)
Barbarian 2
Frenzied Berzerker 10 (Complete Warrior)
War Hulk 10 (Miniatures Handbook)

He had to rely on magic items and the party spellcasters for mobility and stuff, but he was a beast in combat.

[Disclaimer]I actually haven't played this at epic, but I want to.[End Disclaimer]

Cleric 8 / Monk 1 / Sacred Fist 10 / Contemplative 2 / Void Incarnate 10 / More Sacred Fist 4

This build won't win on pure caster level (due to VI), but he can get epic spellcasting as early as 24th level. With the right equipment (monk's belt, gauntlet of the talon, etc.) he can hit like a pure monk, and he has the Void Incarnate defensive abilities.

Oh wow.
I would have thought that most epic chars would have been arcane spell casters.
Thanks Rob, i'll have a look at arcane archer, and order of the bow.

I got an idea rolling around in my skull

Martial Rogue2/Ninja3/Invisible Blade5/Master Thrower5/Assassin15 sounds deadly enough to me...

Shuriken/Daggers of death anyone? Combining Bleeding Wound with Arterial strike will start wearing things down fast.

I'm playing a level 23 PC right now (I know, you asked for 35 levels) that is an absolute blast. Half-fey (+2 LA) Favored Soul 20/Hierophant 1 who's specialized in healing, buffing, and de-buffing, and is currently taking a recently de-demonized city and turning it and the 100 miles around it into a natural monument to Pelor, his deity. His CHA is 34 with magical equipment, and he's a knockoff of Stephen the Crazy Irishman from Braveheart.

At 35 levels, especially with level 35 wealth, you're basically a minor deity. Just figure out what you want to do (Melee Monster? Healer and Buffer Supreme? Battle Caster and Transmutationist? Epic Leadership and Legendary Commander?) and then tell us so that we can optimize a L35 build from there.

Martin Luther, straight up monk, eventually deity of Ki. Lawful Evil, and would live and die for his honor. Believed that perfection of the mind led to perfection of the body, and as such took it upon himself to destroy all alcoholic beverages, since they disrupted and impeded perfection of the mind. Used enchanted gloves to enhance his unarmed fighting ability, and pursued massive increases to his wisdom score. Eventually built up an army, and regained control of the kingdom stolen from his (betrayed and murdered) father. Had a personal vendetta against Pelor.

Jyste Ke'Syren: Human Cleric of Pelor/Paladin/Divine Emissary. Completely focused on helping the common folk. Fought an Infernal at level 1, and won (Vorpal weapons and natural 20's do wonders)! Used Innate Spell (Heal) on days off to heal the sick and dying wherever she was. Developed an epic, massive AoE heal spell solely to help the sick and injured (much quicker and more effective than Innate Spell [Heal]).

Slayer: Human Ghost Wizard. Chaotic Evil, took sadistic glee in wanton destruction, mayhem, and slaughter. Scared to death of elephants (led to his becoming a ghost). Metamagicked-Meteor Swarmed a host of White Dragons. Wore shrunken heads of defeated foes as necklaces.

Mata Hari: Female Rogue/Arcane Trickster, Chaotic Good (Exalted), focused on ranged attacks, sneak attacks, and defense. Master Bow craftsman. Short time leader of Lawful Neutral dwarven city due to a lucky Diplomacy check and some combat/weaponsmithing prowess.

The key is having little things that make your character unique. Martin Luther? Ki. Ki, ki, ki, ki, ki. Jyste Ke'Syren? For the people, and Infernal Slayer. Slayer? Ok, maybe not too original, but shrunken heads ARE cool. Mata Hari? Bows.

You're all right. There are too many options....
Talking to the rest of my players, they seem to think a cleric might be a good idea. So I'm going to attempt to build Rob's idea of cleric 30/ Heirophant 5 today, and post that up here for people to make suggestions to.

Also if any one has any more cleric builds which are focused on spell casting I'll have a look into them as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions, they have not been for nothing, as the DM has said it might be a good idea to have 2 or 3 chars made because other players might be changing chars, and that way i can decide what to play later if other things change.

I think that a Paladin lvl 20/Gray Guard lvl 10/Divine Emissary lvl 10 would be most suitable for you. Try it out. Oh, and sorry for adding 5 more levels, you just can`t miss the Divine Emissary`s Deific Touch ability, can you?

So far I have a few epics one of my favorites is a, Cleric-25/Silverstar-10. if your into that whole level of game play it can be rather fun if your DM actually reliezes that at such a high level those types of characters start to be champions and what not of their faiths. Had a lot of interaction with Solars and Selune herself. it's been fun ;)

Well...a build I used was a Cerebremancer based off of Psion and Wizard. Develope epic transform seed epic spell to change your base type into a solar (but retain personality, alignment, and class levels as in description for extra DC increase)...then...you have full access to arcane spells and psionic powers while being able to prepare divine spells as a 20th level Cleric from being a solar, use wish 1/day without paying exp (since its a spell like ability; Read the supplement Savage Species about that), and of course all the other abilities (well whatever you want... you have to increase the spell DC by 10 for each extranatural and supernatural ability...and there are a ton), higher base ability scores, etc etc. Bring the DC of the spell down via extra spellcasters (possibly make simulacrums of yourself so you can do it for free and have a small infantry who obey you and play similarly to you).

This is just a teeny weeny bit of the things I had mapped out for my last character for an epic campaign (with all the cheese of course)

Isn't the description stating that the immunity to magic is only for spells that allow spell resistance, thus all spells that don't allow spell resistance to apply can affect a golem such as the Elemental Orb spells from Complete Arcane (or Tome and Blood from 3.0 edition).

I once played a rogue5/ranger5/shadowdancer12 but it stunk right after that I played a pure Rogue and took him up to Lvl. 24. He was an absolute sneak attack machine. My advice if you play a rogue is look up the epic feat Lingering Damage. It has brought my character many a trophy kill.

And you can make that more applicable via items with permified versions of 3 level 1 spells: Grave Strike, Vine Strike, and Golem Strike. These spells allow you to apply sneak attack and critical hits to undead, plant, and contructs which normally are immune to them :) .

I like the sound of making a sneak attack char. Would a straight 35 rogue be a good way to go? Or are there any races, or other classes which help make it more fun or give extra abilities?

Be aware that none of those trump Heavy Fortification. My advice for that is an epic rod of negation. Used correctly, that thing can be vicious.

I've made several combinations, but some of the classes I liked most (which some are from 3.0) give a variety focusing on how I want to use the rogue.

Ninja Spy from Oriental Adventures is one of my favorites. You get the ability to hide in plain sight in shadows, change your form, has best save bonus progression for prc type, and other goodies.

An Epic class that is fun and fits well is the Void Incarnate Epic Class which you can access on this site in the Retired Articles section. Basically, you get constant mind blank, people forget you are there every round, you gain Will and Fort save versions of Evasion and Improved Evasion, and other good aura effects. You can apply the aura effects to your party members as well.
However, it requires a number of epic feats so its up to you if you want to do it, but I like the class a lot.

You can dabble in a couple levels of Shadow dancer for some of the same abilities granted by Ninja Spy if you want to focus on other classes.

The Rokugan Campaign Setting has a Core Ninja class that is interesting as well, so check that out if you can ( i believe there is a free pdf of it if you google it :D ).

Hope this helps give you some ideas.

Doesn't the fortify effect only apply to criticals, not sneak attacks?

According to the SRD...
Fortification
This suit of armor or shield produces a magical force that protects vital areas of the wearer more effectively. When a critical hit or sneak attack is scored on the wearer, there is a chance that the critical hit or sneak attack is negated and damage is instead rolled normally.
Remember, Heavy Fort is 100%

I have one Samurai character named Kasai Saka. That's what my account is named after, no S***! He started off level one, but my DM had us go up levels so fast he was epic in no time. I really beefed up his history, and he became more of an assassin. In the end, he had a +32 modifier on his move-silently and hide, and had an AC of 30 something, even though he didn't wear armor. He was chaotic evil, and destroyed everything in his path. I suggest really working on the history of your character, and focusing on your characters personal goals and missions, putting the campaign plot as an afterthought.

I'm playing a couple right now that were built up from low level. One is a Half-orc Barbarian 22/Figher 4, who grew 2 extra arms about the time he turned epic (failed save against an ooze, got a lucky random roll). He has since turned Two-weapon fighting into Multi-weapon Fighting and has 16 attacks per round, doing roughly 600-900 damage. Alot of his strength has come from being very lucky in certain situations that required alot of random rolling. I eventually had to write my own Attack/Damage rolling program specialized for him because my turns were taking too long. He's fun, but doing it over again, I'd probably have went with a 2-handing Frenzied Berserker.

I've also got a Favored Soul or Torm who dipped into Sorcerer and Dragon Disciple, levels 15/1/10 currently. Not very optimized, but he does good damage. He recently helped rescue his deity from a floating citadel, which he will eventually clean out and take over with Leadership + Epic and Legendary Commander. He's Half-giant and now Half-dragon.

If I were to start play at 35, I'd have to go with my Strongheart Halfling Buffer build, which is Bard 4/Archivist 4/Master Thrower 5/Fochlucan Lyrist 22 using Bardic Tutelage to learn Druidic. Inspirational Boost + Words of Creation + Inspire Courage +5 = +11 Attack/Damage + 3 Dark Knowledge (tactics) +1 Haste + 2 Recitation = +17 to Attack, +11 to damage. Attack Bonus 25 + Dex with Weak Spot and Palm Throw, can learn ANY and ALL divine spells + Epic Spellcasting + huge amount of skill points and skills. Kind of a Jack of All Trades. Only thing it's missing is trapfinding, but that could probably be arranged too.

I had a level 40 monk of doom once, it all depends on what your allowed to use. I had some custom magic items (Just spell effect tattoos, like a delayed blast fireball usable as a standard action tattoo) and two templates, but everything else was monk related.

Monk, Initiate of Draconic Mysteries, Student of the Dragon, Shadow/Shade Templates, Tattooed Monk..... various mixings of those levels. Pick up a Monk's Belt obviously.

With Improved Natural Attack and the bonuses from Initiate, and considering you'll have your monk damage beyond level 20 (where it maxes out), your standard punch damage is 2d10 + 3 size increases.
If you pick up those epic bracers that give like +12 Str/Con and for all intensive purposes make you a size larger when it's beneficial, that's 4 size increases, and whadda know, that's the max on the chart.

12d8 per punch, huzzah.

If they allow you to go beyond that, the Spell Compendium has a spell that lets you make a bludgeoning weapon increase it's damage size without actually increasing it's size, and the greater version lets you gain more per 4/5 caster levels, so if you got an item of that as continuous use that's another 3-4 sizes.

I enjoy'd that monk.

Rogue2/Hexblade3/Bard1/Wizard2/Archivest2/Fochlucan Lyrist22.

Base Attack Bonus Pre Epic: +16
Wizard Casting: 24th level, Add Practiced Spellcaster for 28th.
Archivist Casting: 24th level, Add Practiced Spellcaster for 28th.

Tons of skills, trap finding, evasion, Mettle, Arcane Resistance, 23rd level Bardic Music, very high base saves, ect. I could do better, but that is pretty wicked, especially if your DM lets you add a epic practiced spellcaster like feat. You get 4 attacks each round, almost every spell in existence, incredible resistance to attacks, and the only real stat you have to worry about is Intel.

Pick up Epic Spellcasting, Improved Spell Capacity (x3 or x4), and persistent spell. Develop an epic spell to ward against antimagic, dispeling, and disjunction. Proceed to destroy anything in your way.

We had translated our old 2nd ed. PCs to 3.0 Epic PCs and played two
campaigns. It was only for fun and "the good old times".

The PCs were not optimized, and they were not balanced to each other. We played with a mixed group of Lv 20-Lv 33 (yes, many levels between them), but had a lot of fun cleaning out Rappan Athuk (Necromancer Games). It was a proper ending to the campaign - Orcus himself killed the whole party (TPK of eight PCs). We had him on his knees (less than 150 HP left of 1.200 HP), but in the end, he won.

They were all pretty memorable.

One was a musketeer, but with a X-bow instaed of a musket. Rog 10/Fig 2/Psi 2/Elocater 8/Psionic Trickster X*. When he needed to, he became a blur and his bolts took out ancient dragons like pidgeons.
* Psionic Trickster = Arcane Trickster, but PSI instead.

Another one was a Jack-of-all-trades: dwarven princess,
Aristocrat 3/Fig 4/Cle 3/Wiz 3/Warpriest 10/Myst Theurge 9. She was the face and the healer of the group, and a pretty good buffer. Her attack spells lacked the punch of a Lv. 33 PC. And as a priestess of Claggadin, she charged into melee with two dwaven battleaxes...

The dwarven princess was married to a dwarven battlerager, whose greataxe sundered demiliches and artifacts alike. His favored enemies were beholders, which he rularly blinded (all eleven eyes).

The human paladin/tempest wielded two intelligent swords (holy avengers), which were constantly arguing which sword was more important. I think, the guy p***ed holy water. For a long time he was using a flaming and a frostburn blade, until he was hit by a disjunction spell.

The paladin's wife was the best caster (straight druid 26th).

Ah, good times...

10th level cleric, 10th level radiant servant of pelor, and 3rd level heirophant. The guy was literally a walking solar flare after permanent emanation. Blinded all evil creatures within 2000 or so feet, no save. And gave fast healing 15 to any allies within 10 feet. There was no real need to cast healing spells inbetween battles if you could wait awhile.

I had a 30th level mindflayer monk that specialized in grappling. Had some +40 something to grapple, and that was before I decided to try and increase his size and stuff.

Pretty much, at epic level, whoever really gets to go first-wins. Lots of fun though, cause your pretty much super-heros/villians.

Wow, lots of replies since i last checked.

Well, for our last session I played a LG cleric 30/ Heirophant 5, which was really cool.
I'm still reading all these replies and advice because I have a feeling that the cleric might not stay with this group for too long. Mainly because the party has a slightly 'Evil' bias.
So it's very possible - probable even - that I will be introducing a character with less tendancies towards paladin's veiws.
The one thing that has become clear from all your replies, is that at epic levels, pretty much anything can work. And even if a char is not the most powerful, the flavour can make it a great char.
So, I'm going to experiment with a few builds and see if i come up wth anything i like, and then if i need to I'll be able to use that char.
I'll check for replies more regularly this time.
Thanks

I played a LN(later on LE) Yuanti-Pureblood Enchanter, I just focus on making his Enchantment spells as rediculously powerful as possible and penetrating SR as well. At level 21 we fought Bel, Lord of the first layer of The Nine Hells, and I successfully used Mind Rape (BoVD) on him, and erased everything he knew from his mind and copied it into my own mind leaving him a drooling mess that could hardly remember how to even breath. For the rest of the campaign I was constantly argueing with Bel as he refused to shut up.

I also considered getting Innate Spell so I could cast Suggestion at will, I loved using suggestion on my party, mostly so they would just stop bothering me. The manipukltions of other were just to much fun.

Also I started as LN because then I could use Sanctified spells from the BoED and Corrupt spells from BOVD. Any of the enchantment spells from BoED can be used to incredibly evil ends. I lost the Sanctified spells after I finally became evil, I fell a massive pit was open underneath my feet, and the partys dwarf had been put to sleep right next to where the pit had opened, so I used some spell or another to swap places with him.

That does sound like the sort of char you could have endless fun with. You can mess with the party, NPCs and enemies. It's brilliant.

I was well known for saying "Suggestion: Go away" first time I used it I was in an argument with the party fighter we were actually standing RPing the argument, and I just up and said it while he was speaking.
