Greater Staff Mastery

You can use the charges of a staff instead of your own spell slots or memorized spells.

Prerequisites: Master Staff

Benefit: Instead of losing a spell slot for casting a spell you can instead use the number of charges required for a spell of that level from your staff. For instance, instead of losing your last memorized chain lightning spell, you could instead use three charges from your staff of transmutation. In addition, this feat allows a caster who prepares his spells to use a staff or multiple staffs as spellbooks. He can memorize any spell on a staff he is holding as if it were written in a spellbook in his possession.

How does this interact with metamagic?

Basically you are using charges as if you had Absorption (with enough absorbed charges) cast on you. You cast the spell (lose the charge(s) from the Staff) but dont lose it from your memory a sorcerer doesnt lose the spell slot. Or if you want to think of it in another way, its like the charges from your staff replace a Pearl of Power of the correct level. So interacting with metamagic isnt an issue, if they spell was memorized with metamagic, its cast with metamagic, uses the number of charges appropriate for that level and still stays in your memory with metamagic. Or where you asking about using the staff as a spellbook and how it interacts with Metamagic?

I believe they were asking about the following scenario:

17th level wizard casts a 9th level spell and uses the charges from a staff to potentially burn up to 41 levels of Metamagic Feats onto the spell.

A problem I would think avoided, by the wording of the feat. Namely- that the spell has to be memorized before it works.

But then- what of Sorcs, who never memorize their metamagic feats? :)

Well, WotC likes screwing over sorcerors anyways, from what I've heard, so it's keeping with company policy :P

This isnt an Epic Metamagic Spell Trigger, if you dont have a 50th level spell you arent going to be able to do the trick you are talking about. In reality I think Metamagic Spell Trigger in CM has been nerfed a little too much (and made too powerful in other ways), I think its max spell level should be the max spell level of the caster, not 9th (which is allowing low levels to power up to 9 which they cant cast) and holding back epic characters who have ability to cast 10th and higher spells. We've rule 0ed it to that effect in my campaign.

Master Staff lets you use spell slots in place of charges on your staff, Greater Staff Mastery lets you use charges on your staff instead of using up a Spell slot. I added the memorization part for wizards to equal it out, because without it, its a much better Sorceror feat then a Wizard feat. I'd also let it work with Metamagic Spell Trigger, with either the CM rules or the modified rules from above.
