| goawayugh09-06-07, 11:33 AM | I DMed a game where they ended at level 37. It was not as much fun as I thought it might be at first. Anyway, I'm sure people have played much higher level games. So, what is the highest level game you've ever been a part of (PC or DM)? |
| Tequila_Sunrise09-06-07, 12:42 PM | Sorry to disappoint, but my highest was about 27th. I really shouldn't have DMed that game with such new players. |
| Sol_Aedh_Avoth09-06-07, 01:52 PM | If we can consider a guest NPC, mine is above 200 (he had his reasons, before anyone begin to shoot)... :P But it was before reading the Manual Of Epic Levels, I used the few rules presented in Forgotten Realms (so, he was about at 10% of the Strength he would have had with the Manual)... |
| BillTheManiac09-06-07, 02:18 PM | My DM was planning to take a game to 65ish. We had to end the game at level 4. |
| Darimaus09-06-07, 05:06 PM | I'd have to say my highest was level 69, and I was quite pleased with the campaign. The characters were all very interesting, and the combats were awesome. |
| SokenzanMarauder09-06-07, 05:42 PM | Highest I've played in 3.5 is 28. In 2nd edition I played a wizard that was around level 300 (this was of course when I was younger and I found amazingly high numbers more fun than the RP aspect of the game). -Gene |
| Kamin_Majere09-06-07, 05:48 PM | I played a game that went to 24th level once. But it broke down as things get a little silly. Epic play is really interesting, but not something i've ever been able to get into. It seems that the game either becomes really easy or impossibally hard. |
| rob_douglas09-06-07, 06:23 PM | 23rd now and still going. Plan to play to about 30th or so. Pre-3E, well, let's not go there. We were children.... ROB |
| Ardenyl_Syn709-06-07, 09:52 PM | I've played in three campaigns that went into epic, to about 27th level, and I do have to agree that past about 22nd level things really just break down. In one campaign, the DM started handing out the most ridiculous items he could think of; at one point, I was dual-weilding +10 longswords with magic weapon bonuses that were about +30 (with things like doublekeened, fiery burst, holy burst, doublespeed, etc.). It got so bad that we were taking out gods and abominations left and right until the DM put a greater diety at us and had his Divine Celerity incinerate all of us (not exactly the greatest ending, and he hasn't DM'ed since). In another campaign, the DM got tired of trying to DM an epic campaign for similar reasons of silly character stuff, and we ended up fighting the Sphinx from some Dragon magazine that was made around the time Epic Level Handbook was released, and it killed us in about 3-4 rounds. In one of our more recent campaigns, the DM from the above example decided, for some crazy reason, to give epic another shot. It ended up even worse. The campaign became intensly bizarre (we somehow ended up in real world Earth, circa 2014 A.D., and started fighting robotic hordes in Egypt, fought an evil Japanese Corporation, met future versions of our real-life persons, caused the Rapture....I could go on, but suffice to say it got really, really, really silly). The DM decided that the best way to minimize the insanity of epic level play was to make almost everything beyond combat into "cinema" events (like cinema's from a video game), where we could do nothing but watch the "cinema" like we were in a video game. This lasted for about two sessions before we teleported into a U.S. missile base, stole a bunch of nukes, and blew up the BBEG floating citadel of evil (which was Atlantis...yeah....). He has yet to DM again. I ran a game to 37th level, and while it was fun, it definately gets crazy. Often times, super crazy. I don't think I'll ever DM an epic campaign again, but I suppose it's something every DM should do at least once, if only to add a bunch of funny epic-campaign-disaster stories to his repetoire. :D |
| Starmage2109-06-07, 11:19 PM | highest level: 38 Ive started a few campaigns right off at level 30 (a nice clean round number), and a few slightly lower. The highest level game ive played in however is this 26 gestalt munchkin monstrosity. Rolling dice in that game was moot. |
| Psionx09-06-07, 11:24 PM | I haven't actually 'played' a D&D game as much as I played in a forums kind of thing. Made a character called Rathe in something called the town. Of course he was hideously broken, but I had fun anyways. It seems like the higher you go in levels, the more like -WTF mode of DotA the game becomes. Link (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2281549&postcount=394) NOTE: I left the town after it was explained to me that power gamers have no place there. Long Story I was in pursuit of a criminal on a patrol of the city because I was in the police force. I went after some guy who was obviously upset and tried to change his anger and hold him in place but apparently in the town, plot is more important than anything. A character called Aesa who was a goddess of VERY high rank also followed him but put a prismatic wall up so no one would follow. I just flew over it. Eventually me and her got into combat since we had differing interests. Using my brokenness of things like being able to manifest powers when it wasn't my turn as long as I hadn't used the maximum number of quicken spells I countered her strong bestow curse ability with timeless body. I returned fire with an equally broken ability to delay powers out of a temporal acceleration and using overlapping accelerations I manifested delayed ego whips. She broke her own rules by somehow yanking me out of my acceleration loops and trapping me in alot of prismatic spheres. Now that I think back on it, I should have timeless bodied my way out of the spheres and used swarm of crystals instead of ego whip since: no save, no resistance, untyped damage, no touch ac necessary and since I had infinite pp I could probably have killed her plot or no. I instead gave up and found later the guy I was pursuing was a lich. After I got back to the station, another guy on the force had apprehended someone and was filling out a report. Thats when some guy opened a hole in the wall using stone shape and we used faeries to close off the wall, after I brokenly intervened aesa came again to mess it all up. I decided to make my character level 100+ by following the XP rewards for a character of my level and use my brokenness against a monster with the necessary CR but ease to defeat. After that I got a wonderful PM from both Aesa and some other guy who was a leader of the town about how plot is important and such. I stopped playing because I realized that the town is a town of role players, not roll-players. BTW I removed the abilities in my sig b4 I left but I summarized them as best as I can remember. I also had something that said I didn't need psionic focus to use my feats. http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39164&page=20 http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39164&page=21 |
| NinjaPenguin09-07-07, 08:06 AM | Played to about level 27 before things got crazy. Technically, the game for to 40+, but that's because at the end of the last session we ended up killing something FAR beyond our CR, and our DM had this thing about continuing the pattern on the table... yeah, it was crazy. But up until that, one of the most fun characters/games I'd ever played. I have a new respect for the Rod of Wonder. :D |
| goawayugh09-07-07, 08:41 AM | I have a new respect for the Rod of Wonder. :D I played a Kender with one of these once. Not epic, but WOW was that fun! |
| GoldenGoblin09-07-07, 02:05 PM | I had a game that got up to about 30s from level 1 Was like 2 years. Running a epic game was so much work, fun work but still work, Advancing monsters by hand, updating old modules or editing ones that had already been done. Epic games are interesting because battles can be 6 seconds or 6 hours, characters have so much more freedom. As one of my players said, who has played for over 20years like me, epic games are much more philosphical and not combat driven but story driven even more. The adventure ideas always have to be really big in scope but I wouldnt have it anyother way. |
| Xaer09-07-07, 03:07 PM | Just finished a game from level 1, ended at level 35. It was a solo, though, and online, so it had only been running for about 4 months. But as I'm starting the World's Largest Dungeon next week... that highest level amount could go up. |
| BillTheManiac09-07-07, 05:49 PM | Just finished a game from level 1, ended at level 35. It was a solo, though, and online, so it had only been running for about 4 months. But as I'm starting the World's Largest Dungeon next week... that highest level amount could go up. WLD includes epic? |
| SokenzanMarauder09-09-07, 06:35 PM | WLD includes epic? Nope. It takes you from 1 to 20 though. -Gene |
| IrishRover09-14-07, 01:04 AM | I had one character that I started at level 0 (Not even level 1, 1st edition Unearthed Arcana cavalier) He did quite well as a cavalier for a long time, but SHE (note change) added magic user (1st edition term again) with some house rules for adding a class. 15+ years later, she retired as a 30th level cavalier/21st level archmage (1st edition, "archmage" was not a seperate class, but a magic user that could do 9th level spells.) That's the highest level character I've ever played...adn she earned every level the hard way. |
| goawayugh09-14-07, 06:56 AM | That's the highest level character I've ever played...adn she earned every level the hard way. That's the best way to do it! My first character ever was a 3.0 Rogue (plus a few dips in other classes) that I played from 1st through 24th. He is now officially retired (IC and OOC), my wife cried when I told her that I was retiring him (she was a fellow PC the whole way). |
| Karsus the Mad09-14-07, 08:46 AM | 30th level as DM (I don't go higher). |
| Grandmaster_Kane09-14-07, 07:28 PM | Had a level 3,000 game going one time. It was a d&d cross over to Marvel and Dc cosmics.... dont ask |
| Karsus the Mad09-14-07, 07:43 PM | Had a level 3,000 game going one time. It was a d&d cross over to Marvel and Dc cosmics.... dont ask I'd like to know how you managed to keep track of everything! Which rules edition did you use? Serious question btw |
| Galeigh09-14-07, 09:52 PM | Well with my usual GM, nobody ever goes higher than 45 because once a character hits lvl 45 the GM takes the character sheet and, depending on what the character has done, he either because a legendary hero/villian known throughout the world and is the source of quests for later parties, and in some cases, like a Blacksmith named Roland, become known for creating the most powerful weapons ever seen :P |
| Grandmaster_Kane09-14-07, 11:30 PM | I'd like to know how you managed to keep track of everything! Which rules edition did you use? Serious question btw 3rd edition and it was a mess Bunch of fun custom feats thou |
| JarionSilverblades09-14-07, 11:51 PM | Highest level game was a level 24, I played a Cleric 7/Wizard 7/Mystic Theurge 10. |
| E-Arkham09-15-07, 01:18 PM | Two highest level characters are 28th Wizard/Paragon Human and a 29-30ish Eldritch Knight (not my character so I don't know his actual level). Still going as an active campaign. Two major slowdowns are burning xp for crafting magic items and finding enemies that will actually give the group xp. It hasn't become silly yet, though the group is capable of doing quite a lot of damage over two rounds. Plus there's a lot of time and expense spent tending our respective "strongholds": a magic school, a military academy, and an orphanage (don't ask). Kep |
| Mesiolan09-17-07, 07:06 AM | In pre-3ed times we had a campaign, which was DMed by rotating players. Most had more than one PC. The average level was 36 in the end. The rules were a blend of OD&D (XP-tables, basic monster stats, Immortal Rules), homebrew (multiclassing, skills and feats) and AD&D (outsiders, undead, advanced dragons, planes). The final BBEG was a wizard lv. 36, who was at the doorstep to godhood. For this, he had to learn every type of magic known on that world, and to destroy a few nations in the process. He had cloned himself four times to get more actions each round, and each clone had individual powers (one was a true ancient red dragon, another a true elemental fire lord, the third a true demilich, and the last a werecreature). The original was a wizard/ninja, who killed the three strongest fighter types of the players in melee, in one round, dealing 800 HP with daggers. No fighter had more than 130 HP at lv. 36. Yes, it was that silly, but still...good times. In 3.0, I've played a single adventure at 23rd level. The showdown was against Orcus' avatar in a dungeon called Rappan Athuk. We had nine PCs, transferred from 2ed times (see above), and were a bit new to the rules. We had a TPK then. One player is still grieving his onyx (= CN gem dragon, stats of black dragon) sorcerer necromancer PC. If he would create that PC in 3.5 rules, including Draconomicon, the PC would be ELC 40+: young adult black dragon, casts as sorcerer 20, necromancer PrC 5, fighter 4. In 3.5, we have not reached epic levels. |
| Phaele09-18-07, 01:37 PM | Right now we are 39th-44th level. The variance is what happens when someone has had to take a semester off, or has had to work, take a kid to ball games etc. Games can unbalance if the DM doesn't work at keeping them in line. It makes me sad that I could go blow up Graz'zt or Mordenkainen or Elminster. But, because I am *not* a munchkin, and I enjoy the RP aspect... I don't. For those of you familiar with FRCS...my DM was a god send. I have been in love with Netheril since AD&D. He let me do some heavy duty lore research and delve into some extra gaming session play (which he did for the rogue who made his own thieves guild, the Kensai who started his own academy, the dwarfen cleric who started his own temple etc. etc.) and allowed me through use of rules and spells seek out a tutor of a long dead empire, ( and through some snazzy back story work...actually be a full blooded member of the dead empire from a small surviving group of them in a refuge and so on). So, by the point in time we currently are at... I have raised a flying city, set up a government and made allies, restored the desert below it to arable land, and recovered lost treasures of the empire. Awarding me books and histories, or even tapestries to put in my palace is what is done in lieu of + 8 Keen Vorpal Adamantine Bastard Swords. And, as all good things end, my character had an heir...set the rulership of her empire with her brother, and managed to ascend to demi-godhood. For those of you who know Netheril, you get it. But, it ends up being all with your DM. With us, we all made strongholds, or empires or had other desires... one of the Dwarves wanted to have the biggest gem...ever. Be it ruby, or sapphire... so he developed epic spells based on mining to find it. He wanted to carve the biggest statue of his god out of a ruby I think it was... Epic is all about RP. If you want to kill hectonchaeires in a single blow, turn destroy atropals... cool. More power to ya. But to make it fun, people like Mirt the Moneylender should still be able to roll a Nat 20 and see the lvl 39 rogue filching a few coppers. By that level, you can pay your way out of any fine... or make a hideously successful bluff check. Pre 3.5... I got a wizard to lvl 40? I think that is what the expanded cap became in AD&D. Elven High Mage that time around ^_^ |
| goawayugh09-18-07, 01:47 PM | But, because I am *not* a munchkin, and I enjoy the RP aspect... I don't. Please read this (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=11990222). |
| BillTheManiac09-18-07, 05:55 PM | Please read this (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=11990222). His problem is that he doesn't have good stats for cosmic entities and awesome entities, so he can beat them but he wants to roleplay a character that cannot beat them, thus the conflict. I suggest you check out dicefreaks for your campaign's stats. |
| Averroes09-18-07, 06:07 PM | 18th level. Longest campaign I've ever run. Probably won't get above 15 for another few years in our campaigns. We usually finish up about level 12. But What I"m doing in the Epic forum I don't know. |
| rob_douglas09-18-07, 11:43 PM | Averroes: You really, really want to let yourself keep going, and fall into the great abyss that is 30th level and higher. Don't fight it....let the warm embrace of ultimate power sweep over you.... yes, you too could rule the world, the plane, the multiverse...... ;) ROB |
| Ivar the terrible09-20-07, 08:31 AM | I've been playing since 1987 and over the years, the highest level party I've DMed for got to the mid to high 30s. A few of he characters are still alive and playable, but require much planning or that right mix of mood and inspiration (at 32 thats not always easy to find) to make it work. I enjoy playing at all levels anymore, but I always seems to have little more fun DMing and playing higher levels 12+. |
| RealSorceror09-23-07, 12:06 PM | Level 70. Granted, I skipped levels 31-54, but I had to wright a pretty detailed backstory. Our game doesn't run off of exp at those levels, because it is exceptionally tedious to calculate, and even more tedious to give a 60th level character one level. So generally, we will do several epic combats and RP sessions, and then we will gain 5 levels. Even though this might only happen once every 4 or 5 sessions, it probably still causes us to level faster than we would if we calculated exp. Everything we fight at this level must be hand made, because no existing critter provides any real challenge. Also, any character above level 50 is usually a diety, and uses the rules in Deities and Demigods. |
| Planeswalker45909-25-07, 04:42 PM | Granted, The campaign I ran that went to about 27th level was riddiculous, simply because the party cleric, who decided to be a beat stick, was superpowerful by 17th level. He was doing more damage output in 1 round of actual melee combat than our party beatstick! And it was all legal stuff, from spells that could stack to feats and buying powerful items. The only way the party could even compete with him was by giving them +10 weapons! And even then, by about 24th level...and none of use in the group can understand how he did this....but he was adding strength and charisma bonuses to all attacks and damage rolls, and using Power attack (among other feats), and spells and what not, he was doing 500+ damage in a round. I had to stop it. Epic play is fun, but past the 22nd-24th level mark, it can become far to unwieldly, especially if you have players like the ones in our group, as other members on this forum can attest to. |
| PrinceOfTheVoid09-25-07, 07:34 PM | That sounds like a very standard Divine Power, Righteous Might, Divine Might, Power Attack combo. There's a reason that there's a C in CoDzilla, you know. For me, I think the highest we ran was around 100, although I've played in a lot of 50th level games too. They're fun to design, if you have the time, since you can pretty much make the most ridiculous encounters and still expect the PCs to prevail. I fondly remember a teleportation circle leading into an Antimagic fielded veritcal shaft, which emptied into a 20ft deep, completely enclosed in adamantine and walls of force tank of acid that extended in a tunnel for another 100ft. At the end, there were no less than 10 Paragon SHadows of the Void led by an Undying Scion Black Slaad who had Mordenkeinan's Disjunction at will. All that I'll say is that that fight left a mark on the party. |
| goawayugh09-25-07, 11:32 PM | That sounds like a very standard Divine Power, Righteous Might, Divine Might, Power Attack combo. There's a reason that there's a C in CoDzilla, you know. Hehehe, sig'd. |
| rob_douglas09-26-07, 02:31 PM | For DMs dealing with all these clerics running around buffed like that and complaining they outstrip the fighters: Modenkainen's Disjunction. Again, and again, and again! And antimagic field. And Epic Dispelling/Reaving Dispel (at only 27th level, you should steal a few of these). Anyone with decent Use Magic Device can use a scroll of MDJ. And Balor's and dragons have descent UMDs. Granted it is a lot easier to have 4 Pit Fiends casting Greater Dispel each round at 24th level and actually taking some buffs off. Clerics are great - until the spells run out. ROB |

Aww, I remember back in the day when I used to do only 500 damage a round. :D Now dealing anything under 1,000 means you just want to wrestle and horse around. What you really gotta look out for is those 60+ beasts that can deal out 5-6,000 damage as standard actions; and they're holding back. |
| PrinceOfTheVoid09-26-07, 08:33 PM | And that isn't even an exaggeration above. I ran a 50th level dungeon crawl a while back. The one character was some ungodly dual wielding monstrosity using 2 Greathammers (18-20/x4 weapons from MM4). Not to mention we were using Orichalum from the Immortals Handbook and he was criticalling on like 8-20 as well as getting like 10 attacks a round at something along the lines of 120d10 +185. It worked out to something like an average of 20000 damage a round. The only thing that slowed him down was the Paragon Minotaur Frenzied Berserker that I threw at him, and only then because he had to outlast his rage for 20+ rounds to actually killed him. By that point, his negative damage was so insane that he just dematerialized into nothingness in an "oh, wait. I'm dead" moment. And the higher you go, the worse it gets. We played a ridiculous game once with double-gestalted DvR 20 gods at level 100. Average damage there, including multispell, was something like 50000 a round. Aboslutely ridiculous. |

| PrinceOfTheVoid09-26-07, 09:26 PM | Probably. BUt it was fun. I figure that as long as the enemies are as powerful as the players balance is maintained. It is kind of difficult to roleplay at that level though, just by the virtue of your obscene mental stats |

Damn that'd be pimp, but having to spend the 20 hours needed to hand craft all the baddies would be a living hell. |
| Planeswalker45909-27-07, 01:41 AM | Well, I was able to solve the problem when they fought the finally boss-A Divine rank 17 Elder titan with 24 Fighter levels who dropped an epic spell called "Nuclear Fusion Blast". Super Buffed Cleric can't handle that too well. In the end, they still beat the boss.....at the cost of a TPK!:P |
| PrinceOfTheVoid09-27-07, 11:49 AM | Keep in mind, RealSorcerer, that the Immortals Handbook tends to increase the power curve a bit. (Like, there's no way that both a Devastation Beetle and an Elder Unelemental are even close to the same CR). Also, Ascension isn't out yet, so if you didn't preorder the PdF then you'll have wait along with the rest of us. The Epic Bestiary I is out in print, and is incredibly useful for campaigns spanning 50-100, and even beyond that easily. |

| Naze10-02-07, 10:34 PM | Level 20. The DM finished the campaign with one member of the party being trapped in an plane of existance used by gods solely to trap demons and other gods in; an eternal prison, essentially. The DM left the ending with the possibility of continuing the campaign much further, which I'm hoping for, since I now have an elven Ranger-9/Wizard-5/Eldritch Knight-6 and am really wanting to continue. From what I see, there's actually a lot more potential for a larger and far more intriguiging storyline now, then before we hit epic. It actually did get QUITE a bit silly at times around level 12-15, but from level 16 on, it was incredibly involving and fun. |
| deadkoo10-03-07, 05:43 PM | 17th was the highest i ever actually played to(1-17.. took almost a year of playin 2-3 times a week..) but We played 20 and 30 lvl campaigns here and there... it all depends on the group... if you wanna goof around thats fine, but I prefer a stable group/campaign that you can play for a long time... and unless your group loves to RP and can do it properly, epic gets kinda lame.. the moment I could fire 39 +10 arrows per round with my arcane archer I started to get bored... I actually utter the phrase: "So.. are you actually gonna send us up against anything that I CAN'T kill in one round?". not surprizingly I died 3 rouns later... Devastation beetles suck ass. |
| Gemstone10-04-07, 10:04 AM | as of now, the highest level (or rather, ECL), is 25. A lich wizard and a vampire paladin, vs. an insane archmage and the mother of all spiders... still going strong :) |
| Rikandur_Azebol10-04-07, 12:20 PM | Power of the Amidah. And duel style game at ECL 150 using Upper_Krust's rules. Crap that our folks are doing, and mark that spells were forbidden, is crazy. So far I managed to lose 3 duels. :) |
| BillTheManiac10-04-07, 12:32 PM | I want to run an ECL 1000 duel and see how it goes. |
| gullas10-04-07, 02:26 PM | I want to run an ECL 1000 duel and see how it goes. it would go like this a-boom b-booom a-boooom b-boooom bard-inspire gourage a and b - wtf?:uh-huh: |
| PrinceOfTheVoid10-04-07, 02:39 PM | Really? To me it seems like it would go more like this: A: Hah, I win. I have this ability! B: Nuh-uh, because I have this ability that cancels your most powerful ability! A: Well, I have an ability that cancels your most powerful ability, so hah! B: Oh well, because I have aleph-aleph-0 Divine Ranks. A: Too bad that I have infinity divine ranks! Ha ha ha ha ha ha! B: But oh, you see, I have an ability that takes away your divinity when you're in the same universe as me. etc, etc, etc (And if no one knows what I'm referring to, check around the top of the Epic Level Discussion boards) |

Or blatant cheese. |
| SokenzanMarauder10-04-07, 06:14 PM | without IH rules, though. Or blatant cheese. The IH rules actually aren't bad for epic (levels 20-40 or so) play, after that though; that's when they get stupid. Personally, I think they add a good deal to epic play, just not too much beyond it. Unless you like taking a month to play through a combat. -Gene |
| PrinceOfTheVoid10-04-07, 06:30 PM | Even then, its not so much as one side winning as one person havign a more convincing argument than the other. And from what I've seen, the system doesn't truly break down until after 100th level or so, which seems to be a very good endpoint anyways for a sane campaign |

Why can't you just not make rules for play beyond 100 if it will be broken? |

Gods? *shrugs* Some people get their jollies from playing/designing characters that break the foundation of the game. Look at the CharOP boards (the Campaign Smashers thread, in particular). |

| Yaeri10-07-07, 04:29 PM | We started playing the game about five years ago. The players now have levels 12, 13, 13, 14 and 14. We're one session into the last campaign we're going to play with this set of characters, and may reach level 20 in the very end. But at the pace we're playing, that'll probably be in a year or two. We actually level pretty fast, but we get to play very little. :( |
