If a level 70 Archmage (not with the archmage class, just with the title archmage) had nearly infinite resources (gold), and he made a Cloak of Epic Charisma, how high could it's bonus to charisma be?

Well, the XP cost is equal to price/100 + 10000 XP. And if I remember correctly, a 70th level wizard needs 70000 XP to advance to 71st level, which means at the very most, he could have 69999 xp to spend on an item.

Just rounding it up to 70K for simplicity sake, we find that x=6,000,000 gp. So he could produce an item that costs 6 million gp.

Going back to the formula for creating a cloak of epic charisma, we have x^2= 600. The square root of 600 is 24 (rounded down). Which gives us a cloak of charisma +24.

24 x 24 x 10000 = 5,760,000 gp, which means 67,600 XP for the cost of creation. It will take 5,760 days (almost 16 years) to accomplish this. Better get to work.

This example really proves some of the inherent silliness within epic item creation. Even with Efficient Item Creation (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#efficientItemCreation) it would still take 576 days (still almost 2 years)

I find that ridiculous amount of time to be one of the best in-game reasons to keep epic items to a minimum and the reason you can make it to 20th level without ever seeing one.

Very true. My personal approach was to focus on the cost. With the exceptions of Sigil (and Union) no city has enough wealth to buy (or sell) epic items to your PCs. This by itself means that few epic items will be found in shops, but only as part of, say, a dragon's hoard or the personal regalia of a 70th-level archmage ;)

Only a Master Arcane Artisan http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ei/20030314a could make one in a vaguely sensible amount of time.

Or a Dedicated Wright in a Planar Bubble associated with the Far Realms. Use something like Extraordinary Spell Aim to get your summoned kaorti out of the emanation that surrounds it.

Be warned that this is highly cheesy, considering some of the other implications of this same trick. Such as casting an indefinite quantity of spells at whatever's outside the bubble in literally no time.

Yeah, magic item creation takes inordinately long at higher levels.

you dont have to worry about that when dealing with an NPC though.

Players might try to take the faster route by going with an epic buff, but that just makes things all the more fun when you dispell it like an evil DM should.
