Ring of Power Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-23-07, 03:41 PM What would you stat the 'one ring' - the 'ring of power' from LoTR?

My epic game has a character that I'm going to give an artifact type ring to - so I was wondering what you all thought the ring would be stat'd at?

08-23-07, 04:40 PM Not entirely sure, but from what I remember...

It allows direct contact with the ethereal plane(in LotR, that only mattered due to the ringwraiths being semi-ethereal).
It grants invisibility against those who cannot see ethereal beings.
Grants some measure of farsight(Frodo was described as being able to see Mordor from over a hundred miles away when wearing the ring.)
Some measure of alignment corruption: evil
It's intelligent, though can only speak the language of Mordor(not sure what the name of it is)
Can make use of a suggestion power(not sure what CL to make that)
Some unknown power(never fully described in LotR) over the wielders of the other rings of power.

08-23-07, 06:48 PM Would you assume that the Ring of Power gives any bonuses?
Perhaps to saving throws, abilities, levels?
Any other special abilities that go along with it?

08-23-07, 06:52 PM It seems like that in the hands of a Maiar such as Sauron, it has further powers, i.e. him killing 20 men with a single swing-- then again that might be simply because he is indeed a maiar. Also, there is a LoTR conversion kicking around on Dicefreaks somewhere, I'm sure they have the 1Ring statted up.

08-23-07, 07:57 PM Although its ability to grant invisibility to its wearer was the only one important to the trilogy, Gandalf at one point tells Frodo that if he, or someone of similar knowledge and intellect, had time to study the ring they would be able to activate even more incredible powers. I don't believe any of those further powers were ever detailed, so I don't think anyone can ever stat out the One Ring without excersizing a good bit of creativity themselves.

08-23-07, 09:10 PM I drew up a little stat sheet for the ring once. I'd say it ups caster level (by how much you decide) and would have to do something for fighters to like an extra attack or something. It is also intelligent and the way it tes those that wear it could be its ego ting them or mind-affecting magic. It might have the special purpose to get back to Sauron and it can change its size at will.

You are referring to Fëanáro, who has put a lot of work into a Middle Earth campaign. His conversion of the one ring is on page 5 of this PDF (http://www.danbrijbag.com/lounge/FoME%20Appendix%201%20-%20Fellowship.pdf). He uses a lot of UA variants, and a little homebrew, which are detailed here (http://www.danbrijbag.com/lounge/Faces%20of%20Middle-earth%20vol.%201.pdf).

So, Ethereal jaunt, no farsight though (That was the seat of seeing -Amon hen- that did that, not the ring itself), obviously intelligent, Speaks only black speech.

Ability to dominate the other rings (and subsequently there wearers and domains) although it had no power over the elven rings.

Errr.
Unhealthy habit of calling to nine scary fellows on fell beasts.

Pretty much it really, he never really mentioned what else it could do.
