OK, so I'm planning on making a Ring of true resurrection. The ring would automatically resurrect the wearer once per day. I used the ring creation rules and came up with it costing 1,314,800, multiplied by 10 as this is pretty clearly epic to get 13,148,000, does this sound reasonable?

It does. But maybe you want to lower it to once a week or 3/week, since I doubt you'll need it every day, and 13 million gp is pretty expensive.

LOL! I was originally trying to do it for 3/week but couldn't figure out the rules to make that work. Any help on that part will be really helpful! that way I can cut the price drastically by putting the, can only function 1/day caveat on it.

No. There's no reason for the x10, it doesn't cross any of the thresholds that trip it.

My impression is that you pay more for the diamonds needed than you are charging for the ring, though. It looks to me like 9 x 17 x 2000 / 5 + 25,000 x 100. I'm getting 2,561,200 gp.

I get the same as Loren. How did you get to 1,314,800GP?

I'm pretty sure Base Price has to exceed 200k. The material components will add a fair bit, but the ring strictly isn't epic.

Actually, there are two different kinds of Epic items:

1) Items that give an Epic bonus. Such as +6 weapons, items with Epic spells embedded, ability boosting items past +6, and so forth. These have their price multiplied by 10.

2) Items that cost more than 200,000 gp. These are considered Epic as in "you need Epic feats to craft them", and "not generally available to non-Epic characters", but they don't have their price multiplied.

The ring falls into the second category. So while a price of 2,561,200 means the item is only available to Epic characters, it doesn't mean the price goes up to 25,612,000.

well it was late at night... and the character creating it didnt have acces to the spell till 18th level, then since i gave it a maximum of 1/day it is only multiplied by 50 not 100 for cost of the diamonds. it should be 1,314,800 if i calculated it right. maybe less because of the 1/day as opposed to an item that has 3/day not sure how to calculate that though.

Ah yes, 50 for use limited. To get cost of charged per day items, divide by 5 and multiply by charges, in this case 1. Also, the 200K limit on being an epic item for crafting purposes does not include material components. And as IceFractal said, this ring does not trigger the x10, because it doesn't exceed the enhancement, resistance, or deflection bonus of normal items.

From SRD:
"not including material costs for armor or weapons, material component- or experience point-based costs, or additional value for intelligent items."

So I get:
9x18x2000/5 = 64,800 base plus 25000*50 = 1,250,000 for a total of
1,314,800.

And you don't even need Forge Epic Ring to do it.

Wow, that's pleasantly inexpensive (For an epic game).

Yeah, you're right, it's 1,314,800GP. Don't know why I thought it was x100 for the material component (it was pretty late at night for me too).

Why wouldn't you want it more than once a day?

As far as I'm concerned an epic character needs to come back to life at least 5 times a day.... but then again when planning epic character items I start by thinking about how to get massive amounts of healing quickly... like gloves that can do heal infinite times a day...or the not quites as epic "masseuse gloves" Cure minor infinite times(very cheap but so much time to get everyone back up to full.)

It's not a charged item, I thought that always made it 100 components.

It states that if an item is continuous or unlimited, not charged, determine cost as if it had 100 charges. If it has some daily limit (i.e. 1/day), determine as if it had 50 charges.

An item is epic if its base cost goes above 200,000gp. From the SRD:

Has a market price above 200,000 gp, not including material costs for armor or weapons, material component- or experience point-based costs, or additional value for intelligent items.

Nevertheless, I recommend making it a limited use, 1/day or something. Or 3/day if you insist. Then rez your healer.

It...IS... only 1/day.

Epic as in needing the epic feat, not as in needing the x10 multiplier.

If you can consider making it an intelligent item so the ring can cast true resurrection on you if you die.
ikki

Yeah.. it needs to be active at all times, so whenever you die, you spring back to full health. Combine this with some ageing-stopping effect and you should have a ring called the "Ring of Forever and Ever"..
Eliminating need to eat, breath and sleep comes as nice bonuses.. and kinda neccesary in a "Forever and Ever"..

Oh yeah, restoration to eliminate fatique too!

...yes, the wearer is till killable, you just need to target the finger of the ring, or the ring itself first ;)
If not just plain and crudely mage disjunct it into scrap in a rather rude fashion.
Or, oh yeah.. A-M. Activate A-M, melee to death, remove ring and walk away.

Monologic Discussion:

hmm.. restoration handles ability loss too..
A death ward would be needed. Aswell as a antimagic field at will.. sometimes you get plain trapped. (but you age during that time!) pps: can an item even generate a-m, wouldnt it blanket itself too? Or if it doesnt, ageing wouldnt restart.

And while not strictly neccesary a gr teleport would be nice too... or you could just box in this ring wearer in a zillion walls of stone and iron, and leave him there to be bored... and probly eventually kill himself just to escape.

Does these holes mean its seriously flawed. Yes. Still useful? You bet.

Note that True Res takes 10 minutes to cast. This is still true for a Ring that does the work. Just as a Wand of Lesser Restoration takes 3 round to use. Making it a magic item doesn't make the casting time instantaneous, even an intelligent item.

that i do have problems buying.. items have always worked instantly, or well, as instantly as a fighter swings his sword anyway.

The thought occurs, it would surely be a lot cheaper to make one that casts Revivify (SC) on you. Since it'll work immediately anyway, it'll fall inside Revifify's time limit, and you don't need the expensive material components or higher level spell to worry about.

From the SRD:

"Activating a magic item is a standard action unless the item description indicates otherwise. However, the casting time of a spell is the time required to activate the same power in an item, regardless of the type of magic item, unless the item description specifically states otherwise."

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#usingItems

And in the DMG under using magic items.

The Revivify solution is better. You do need to couple it with Heal. I am not keen on that spell, as it really does eliminate Death at Epic levels and could be abused when put in a magic item, especially one that can quicken it....I will have to think more on it.

lol.. contradicting itself.
Id just ignoire the later part and have it activate as a standard action, unless otherwise told by the description. Just like the first part says.
The second part is written partially in garble, and should be considered therefore as stuff they forgot to edit out..
