slaying a demonlord [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-15-07, 12:23 PM What kind of effects, immediate visual, planor, effects do you think you would happen if you slew a demon lord on its home plane? Such as Malcanthet?
Looking for ideas to flesh out the after effects.

09-15-07, 01:00 PM They would have awesome death throes. Maybe malcanthet gives off blinding pink light (Fort save DC 10+Half HD+Con or be blinded for 2d4 round), then melts feet-to-head. Then someone nearby gains some of her power, as the contest in the recent issue of Dungeon.

I imagine that the after-effects would be closely tied with the nature of the plane, and the demon lord in question. Additionally, if youre dealing with the Abyss, the plane will be looking for another Chaotic Evil being to be it's master.

09-17-07, 06:20 PM Wizards hasn't really created any definite rules about this kind of stuff because it is more fun to let the DM decide what happens. So, basically, after the mechanical requirements are fulfilled (like the death throes damage, blindness or whatever) you can do what ever you want. Maybe the demon dies but another must take his place (perhaps the one that killed him like in pirates of the carribean). Or whatever you want (maybe even something funny like blue flying monkies suddenly become intelligent and a dominant species).

I always liked Kagato's death in Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, just dissolving into dust but remaining perfectly calm and cool during the whole thing, to the point where he was still talking up until his head when bye bye.

09-19-07, 07:45 PM I agree that it should be spectacular, decided upon by the DM, something affecting nearly the entire plane, but now I must disagree with everyone else. While the Abyss will indeed be looking for a new boss for that lair, it is just as likely to be a Paladin of Pelor as a Demon. It's the strongest person on the plane, or the luckiest in rolling, that becomes the new boss.

09-20-07, 07:48 AM If you’ve read the last chapter in Dungeon’s “Savage Tide” adventure arc, then killing a demon lord (or perhaps just killing Demogorgon) causes a halo-like object to appear and float above the deceased demon’s head. Whoever grabs the halo inherits all the powers of its forbearer and becomes ruler over the corresponding layer of the Abyss (or in Demogorgon’s case, prince of all demons).

If none of your PC’s grab the halo, then I’m sure a few million lesser demons will jump at the chance.

09-21-07, 09:51 PM That halo was the sign of being prince of the demons. Other demon lords won't produce the same thing, but you could describe it as the scepter of rulership over that level, rather than the crown of rulership of the demons.

09-22-07, 09:41 AM Well it might not represent the same way, but I figure the “spirit” of the halo is still there. Somehow the essence of the slain demon lord would manifest and others (maybe just native outsiders) would make a grab for it. That book also mentioned that Demogorgon can never truly die and will always reemerge from the Abyss ninety-nine years later, but if his crown is gone he would not be as powerful. The other demon lords probably reincarnate a similar way.

Like another guy said, it’s mainly the DM’s choice. There is a info column in one of the Fiendish Codex’s that lists a few notable things that occur when a demon dies, so perhaps killing a demon lord doesn’t have any more of an impact than causing their corpse to burst into flames, flash-freeze then spontaneously shatter, or transform into a hundred tiny versions of itself that in-fight until they kill each other.
