From #297, right? I think it was sort of like a super-Dwarven Defender.

TL is right on both counts. It's for LG or LN Dwarves only.

It's not a bad class, but neither is it particularly special, IMHO. While it gives different abilities to the Dwarven Defender or Guardian Paramount, it fills basically the same niche, so I don't see that it adds that much to your options. I think other classes from Dragon #297 (like the Arcane Lord, Perfected One or World Guardian) are more useful, since they fill niches otherwise empty (ie, they're EPrCls suitable for Wiz/ Sorc, Monk, and Druid respectively).

So I'd say Dragon #297 is worth getting if you can, but that if you're only interested in the Starwart Warden it's not worth worrying too much.

Stalwart Wardent is a decent class to progress in if you're a DD, but it doesn't increase the abilities of the Defender class. If does, however, give you several other benefits that could be useful. My recommendation is Legenday Dreadnought from the ELH; that calls fits DDs quite well.

I cry for the lack of published arcane epic classes that don't suck.
