starting wealth for characters over level 40 [Archive] - Wizards Community

Does anybody know if there is a pattern to figure out the starting cash a level 40+ character has? My friend has a group where they are starting as level 55 characters and, well, the amount of money is absent from the guide. We tried to guess what the pattern was, the only thing we THINK we have is that every 5 levels the amount of money increase by 200000 I believe.

Can anyone help?

Aluroon - I'd remove anything that is already covered by the ELH or the DMG. This is not open content, and threads have been locked for it before, even for mere mentioning of wealth for 1 specific level.

Note that the book states the intention is to increase wealth by 10% per level. So the expected wealth at levels above 40 is

1.1^(L-40)*(wealth at 40th level)

For NPCs, it is

1.1^(L-30)*(wealth at 30th level)

You can round in there where you want, but that is really close enough....

I have tried doing this personally for a level 110 character and have gotten numbers WAY below what the starting wealth is for a level 100 character. Are you sure that is the correct formula? Is it possible that you typed it wrong?

Not tryin to be critical, but I am HORRIBLE at math.

P.S. Sorry it took me so long to ask this, I have had AP homework up the ****!

I don't think I understand - you put in 110 and 100 and came up with a smaller number for 100?

Or you compared the number from the formula using 110 with the number from this forum's FAQ table of starting wealth for a level 100 and got a smaller number?

If the latter is the case, then I suspect it is due to intermediate rounding. The table follows this formula, but at each level rounds up to the nearest significant digit, which could account for a large differential as the numbers get higher.

But yes, the formula is correct for the given rule of thumb: PC/NPC wealth increases by 10% every level in epic. If you want to make it 11% or 12%, just make the number 1.11 or 1.12 instead of 1.1.

I tried doing it for 110 and the number was lower than 100. But thank you for the clarification.

Let's see:

1.1^(110-40) = 1.1^70 = 789.75
1.1^(100-40) = 1.1^60 = 304.5

Wealth at 40th = 13.6 million. So, multiplying by 789.75 and 304.5 respectively, we get
110th = 10.74 billion
100th = 4.14 billion

That's what I get with my scientific calculator.

After a certain point, you might as well just give the PC's whatever items they want. This point is level 40

Or not, because some people actually have a semblance of game balance.

Epic levels do not mean "throw away all the rules".

Or not, because some people actually have a semblance of game balance.

Epic levels do not mean "throw away all the rules".

No, but it is really easy to get whatever you want with spell abuse. So the players probably can get them. And balance pretty much breaks down at epic(well, considering what it was at lv 20, who's surprised?)

He did say a "semblance" of balance. As long as you have balanced encounters and the PCs don't actively engage in wealth cheeese, it's will end up pretty even. By "stop tracking wealth" do you mean "let the players come to the table with characters with 1 bil gp at 40th level?
