Appearing as an unassuming tome, the Book of Death (not to be confused with the Book of the Dead) is encased between protective covers of hardened, sullen black flesh and fastened along the left side with the bones of celestials and fiends.

For those of a certain mental fortitude, the Book of Death opens readily, almost eagerly. Scrawled within its pages are thousands, millions of notes and scribbles, a literal black morass of names and circumstances of their deaths. For it is said that the Book of Death confers the power to kill a being almost instantly.

Even illiterates are able to scrawl a name into the book for this name is burned supernaturally into their minds so that they may fastidiously copy.

There is only one constant however. The one whose name is written shall die.

The Book of Death is able to snuff out the existence of any being whose name is inscribed onto its pages. Within 6 minutes and 33 seconds, as they feel excruciating pain beginning in their extremities and ultimately culminating near their midsection, that being's existence will be ended; the Book of Death is considered a DvR 20 deity with a Cha of 52 for purposes of a Fort saving throw: Fort DC 70.

The name however has to be one that the author is familiar with, the degree of familiarity is not relevant; made up names are instantly rejected.

If however, the owner of the Book of Death does not author a name after 13 hours, he or she will die and the tome will be automatically sent to the next willing or unwilling recipient; such victims are chosen at random by the tome.

Those seeking to bring harm or damage to the Book or its many pages are targeted by a focused Hand of Death and must succeed on a Fort DC 70 or die.

Hey there E'tii'stil Shadowsil! :)

I suppose you just have to be careful not to end your writing in the book with a "Yours sincerely, E'tii'stil Shadowsil". :P

I quite like the idea of the book, I just wonder if the time taken to affect a creature could be based upon the length of its name?

Also the book might be reliant on the scribe writing all the creatures names for it to be affected. Perhaps if you wonly write one name, then the target is energy drained instead...?

I dont think you need to add the diety mechanics in there. Just say the Fort save vs the killing effect(which is not sibject to resistances or immunities to death effects of any kind) is DC 70 and that it will even affect dieties if you can manage to figure out their true name and write it in the book.

Sounds interesting. I like it, and might feature a campaign around it if I ever got around to DMing. (I have very little experience in DMing, though.) Presumably it's a major artifact...as the text doesn't say. What manga is this referencing?

Reminds me of Death Note; heh; that last rule is exactly the same as the fake one Light made up; only you replaced days with hours IRRC. Hm.

Ever get the feeling that he reads some mangas or watchs some animes ;)

On a side note I find it amusing that just before I saw this I was thinking of adding something very similar to a Death Note to my Campaign Setting (though there would be only one, and it would have been passed down by the God of Death shortly before his death (and the death of all deities on the world for that matter).

Stop stealing my thoughts!

Hahahaha! I'm not the only one who had this idea!

For the past week or so, I've been doing D&D stats for not just the Death Note itself, but also the Shinigami as familiars/companions and the Shinigami Eyes. I'm still not done yet, but I'm nearly there.

Yay for Death Note. It's my favorite anime series of all time, and it only took about 2 episodes for me to be totally enthralled with it (and now I'm obsessed. ^^)
