| redraven12-05-04, 04:49 AM | I was trying to determine the usefulness of this feat and came to this board in hope of finding a central list of sorts. I cannot find anything else like this via the Search function, so I am starting my own version. Keep in mind that this list is not a "Best of..." but rather a definitive list. If you know of any (3.5) spells that I've missed or wish to discuss which presented here are the best, by all means do so. I will edit this original post as more spells come in. For reference: SRD: PERMANENT EMANATION [EPIC] Prerequisites: Spellcraft 25 ranks, ability to cast the spell to be made permanent. Benefit: Designate any one of the character’s spells whose area is an emanation from the character. This spell’s effect is permanent (though the character can dismiss or restart it as a free action). Effects that would normally dispel this spell instead suppress it for 2d4 rounds. Special: This feat may be taken multiple times. Each time, select a different spell to become permanent. | Jaerom Darkwind12-05-04, 02:58 PM | Arcane sight and greater arcane sight aren't emanations. They have a target of You and a range of Personal. |
| askala312-06-04, 01:17 AM | add these: Libris Mortis Consumptive Field Consumptive Field, Greater Field of Ghouls |
| Molitor12-06-04, 02:10 AM | You missed "gust of wind". |
| redraven12-06-04, 03:48 AM | Arcane sight and greater arcane sight aren't emanations. They have a target of You and a range of Personal. I was about to argue this, since they state that it works like Detect Magic, but then I realized that Permanent Emanation doesn't care if the effect emanates from you, it cares about whether the spell emanates. And thanks Molitor and askala3 for the additions. I shall be getting my hand on Complete Arcane by the end of the week, and shall be adding those spells to the list. |
| Ancient History12-06-04, 07:55 PM | It's a bit of a pity the planar perinarch spell isn't an emanation. |
| Thanael12-07-04, 06:59 PM | Very useful stuff. thanks Now let`s index it by wizard/cleric and level and link it to a html SRD and it will be even better |
| redraven12-10-04, 02:25 PM | Finally got my hands on Complete Arcane. Sorta disappointed though - only three new emanations. |
| GoodTeletubby12-13-04, 12:08 PM | Finally got my hands on Complete Arcane. Sorta disappointed though - only three new emanations. but oh so sweet choices they are permanant greater anticipate teleportation? I'd go for it also: from Eberron: Detect Aberration none in: Sharn: City of Towers Savage Species |
| Dreamknight12-30-04, 06:11 PM | Hmm… I'm kinda worried that Permanent Emanation: End To Strife is rater abusive. |
| NateNate12-31-04, 08:52 AM | Races of Destiny, only one: Animate City; 9th level spell, City domain only; broken! |
| Expanded Psion12-31-04, 09:44 AM | I don't think though that anyone would benefit a lot by Permanent Emanating Antimagic field:)...except if Psionics are Different is used...and even then you'd have to be a Cerebremancer to benefit...(though you would be a kickass character).Or if you're equiped only with artifacts and cast only Epic Spells...:D EDIT:Just noticed Antimagic Field is Dismissable...i think you can dismiss a Permanent Emanation right? And it returns after 2d4 rounds? |

(Though in 3.5 they should have classified it as a Swift or Immediate Action--the fact that they didn't means its as horribly broken as ever). You can turn it off, cast some spellsl, and turn it on again right after--all in your turn, so when your opponent acts, he can't cast anything. |
| Dreamknight12-31-04, 04:19 PM | Not if you limit the number of times per round you can toggle Permanent Emanation, but as written, it actually is broken. Thanks for pointing this out. Now I can fix it before one of my PCs abuses it. Edit: not that they would abuse it, but… I think it should be a swift action, because making it an immediate action would make it almost as broken as it is now, although it would at least limit the number of times per round you could activate/deactivate it. |

| Belial the Leveler02-23-05, 07:15 AM | Now, permanent emanation: antimagic field followed by Permanent Epic spell that makes immune to antimagic field is horribly broken-it gives a protection similar to the magic immunity of the demilich. |
| NineInchNall03-01-05, 08:54 PM | ... and hence not broken, just really, really, really cool. It's good to know that it is possible for PCs to eventually match the abilities of nasty monsters. It restores some of my faith in the system. :pint:  :pint:  |
| Gnarl03-02-05, 03:39 AM | Hello, I don't mean to be a jackass, but the spell list is incorrect or I didn't read the feat description right. Some of the listed spells are spreads and not emanations. Are you sure you can apply Permanent Emanation to those (some kind of official errata or something) ? Permanent Emanation on antimagic field is not a good idea at all, even if you can turn it off. It's hello power attack. You know, oh, I have a whole lot of magic items, lots of protection spells and all and well, I think you're AC drops to something like 10 + dexterity for a wizard or 10 + base armor and shield for clerics. Not to mention that your fellow companions are gona complain that they can't cast spells while you're around (I don't recall reading that you can take free actions outside your turn). Keeping Antimagic field is more crippling than usefull imo. The only situation I would consider putting the field up is against a lone demi liche. I really like Permanent Emanation and End to Strife, especially if you combine it with Mind Blank (yes, End to Strife is a mind-affecting spell). That gets extra cheesy. Another cheesy use of Permanent Emanation is with control temperature. I realy like the idea of always having cold weather around a character that uses Cold Spell Specialization. It makes a devastating fireball mage. All your spells are cold spells get the cold descriptor (you never run out of snow) and you get that +2 to damage on all your spells even in Hawaii |

The character always wants to have one up.Keeping Antimagic field is more crippling than usefull imo. The only situation I would consider putting the field up is against a lone demi liche.Again, see cheater of mystra. If a character is built around the idea of antimagic field, this feat would really help because you can take it down when needed and not have to spend another spell slot to recast it.I really like Permanent Emanation and End to Strife, especially if you combine it with Mind Blank (yes, End to Strife is a mind-affecting spell). That gets extra cheesy. After rereading End to Strife it could be argued that the mind-affecting only applies to the warning that an attacking character will receive retribution. The damage itself could be normal damage having nothing to do with the mind affecting business. However I believe your interpretation is the correct one. |

It's insanely powerful, don't let the downside fool you. I was playing an eldritch knight and I turned on my AMF, charged the enemies cleric and killed her in one round. All of her magic protections, contingencies, didn't go off. No DR worked, no flameshield, blink or other magic mischance. So much for contingency heals, teleports, and planeshifts. If you want to make sure a caster is as dead as a doornail, AMF is the way to do it. I did have an artifact weapon that helped too. Keep in mind, the cleric had almost no AC in that AMF and I powerattacked in full. |

I have successfully employed it against Liches, and they fall pretty quick without all their contingencies and 9th level spells. I would expect similar results for a demilich. Wouldn't a demilich be immobilized since they would not even be able to fly? Doesn't even seem like a fair fight. :smirk: |

Doesn't even seem like a fair fight. :smirk:I did that to a demilich, and you're right he was extremely stuck. He ended up using Time Duplicate to get out of it, but he got slaughtered the round he got back. He used his epic spells while that was going on and once he ran out he was done for. Against melee type monsters, AMF up, attack, AMF down. Don't forget it also suppresses supernatural abilities too. Against casters, AMF up, leave it up. |

| lostone04-21-05, 02:32 PM | Epic spells can overpower AMFs with a CL check. That I did not remember (it has been a good long while since I actually played in or DMed an epic game :)). Where is this rule at? |
| thannider04-21-05, 02:34 PM | According to the ELH FAQ, the demilich's flight ability is not affected by an AMF. It should have been able to just fly on out. |

| redraven04-27-05, 05:10 AM | Hello, I don't mean to be a jackass, but the spell list is incorrect or I didn't read the feat description right. Some of the listed spells are spreads and not emanations. Are you sure you can apply Permanent Emanation to those (some kind of official errata or something) ? Which ones? It could be possible that I've mistakenly added some to the list that don't belong, as I did with Arcane Sight, et tal. |
| rob_douglas11-28-05, 10:21 AM | Bump Can we add this to the Important Epic Threads list? Is everyone happy that this is complete - at least up through some publication? ROB |
| redraven11-28-05, 10:28 AM | Personally, I'd like to wait until the release of the Spell Compendium in December (a book I'm planning on purchasing the first day if possible) before I would call it complete. |
| rob_douglas11-28-05, 10:49 AM | Zone of Truth should not be on the list. It is cast on a point in space, and not on the caster - it does not emanate from him or her or move. You can't even cast it on a rock and take it with you - once you cast it, it is lest in place. ROB |
| rob_douglas11-28-05, 11:08 AM | Blessed Sight should be removed - as Arcane Sight was, for the same reason. Celestial Brilliance also should be removed - as per Antipathy, or Hallow or Consecrate - it doesn't affect the caster specifically and only. Telepathy Block should also be removed - for the same reasons - it affects other targets. Anticipate Teleportation falls off for the same reason - it is not only targeted on you. Also, for Blessed Emanation - what should happen with the Sacrifice component? Usually it cannot be healed in any way while the spell lasts. Since you are making it permament - I would argue that the Strength Drain would also be permanent. If the emanation range is based on caster level - should it grow as you improve in level? E.g. Brilliant Emanation. I say, sure, let the effect grow as you gain levels. You did burn a feat for it, and it is only a couple of spells that are affected. Fianlly, what books are not yet included? Sandstorm? Stormwatch? Forgotten Realms books? Manual of the PLanes, Deities and Demigods, Draconomicon? Draconomicon Aura of Terror - not written with the word emanation, but seems to be one of varying radius depending on what the caster already has. The only one I saw there. ROB |
| Esponer11-30-05, 10:32 AM | Should Touchsight be allowed? Range: Personal; see text I'm not sure how to interpret this. Clearly, Permanent Emanation only counts with emanations, and if you go off this line, and simply read "Range: Personal" then the answer is no. However, I interpret "see text" to indicate that you need to actually read the text to interpret what the range is in terms of... whatever reason you're looking at the range. And it describes itself as a "field [which] emanates from you out to 60 feet", which would meet the requirements for Permanent Emanation. I'd rule that touchsight should be allowed. It's impossible to deny that it's an emanation from you, and furthermore, that it's always an emanation from you, with no exception. Are we disallowing it simply because it reads "Range: Personal"? In fact, hold on. Permanent Emanation says the area must be an emanation about you. "Range: Personal" isn't even relevant to that. Since it describes itself as an emanation about you... thoughts? |
| rob_douglas11-30-05, 02:15 PM | Should Touchsight be allowed? From your description - absolutely. Where is this spell to be found. Even those of us with lots of books don't know them all, and if they are Eberron or FR specific, you are going to lose me quick. ROB |
| Esponer11-30-05, 02:45 PM | From your description - absolutely. Where is this spell to be found. Even those of us with lots of books don't know them all, and if they are Eberron or FR specific, you are going to lose me quick. ROB Sorry, it's straight out of the Expanded Psionics Handbook, it's a psionic power. I'm still a little uneasy about it never actually saying "Area: x emanation around you", but it describes itself as doing that. http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicPowersQtoW.html#touchsight What do you reckon? |
| rob_douglas11-30-05, 04:03 PM | It sounds good to me. I don't know how psionics interact with permanent emanation (I don't use them at all) but the power points for radius improvement has to be an issue for this. I will let the psionic users weigh in on it. ROB |
| thegraveyard12-11-05, 08:55 AM | sandstorm: antifire sphere locate water beast of a thousand legs dire drought global warming thats all that I could really see |
| psly4mne12-16-05, 07:18 PM | It restores some of my faith in the system. :pint:  :pint:  I can fix that. Think of an epic spell that does something really really powerful that is an emanation. Now, a spell this powerful probably has DC 1,000,000 or so - previously something only overdeities and kobold psions could access. Now, apply the Ritual mitigating factor: 1,000,000 additional casters each contributing one first level spell - you will never be able to cast this DC 0 epic spell in practice, but you probably see where this is going. Research this spell. This takes zero million GP and zero hundred thousand XP, and you know have it as a spell known. Take permanent emanation. Select that spell and win the ***** game. |
| NightBreeze12-17-05, 08:35 AM | I think thay should put a limit on the mitigating from additional spellcasters as they did for the sacrifice of hit points.....after all with a lot of time and patience a lich could enslave thousands of wizards, put them into stasis, researcha mega-spell and wake them to help him blow up the world.... |
| Esponer12-18-05, 06:50 AM | I think thay should put a limit on the mitigating from additional spellcasters as they did for the sacrifice of hit points.....after all with a lot of time and patience a lich could enslave thousands of wizards, put them into stasis, researcha mega-spell and wake them to help him blow up the world.... I agree. The mitigation concept doesn't really work. Would it really destroy the game if we said that no amount of mitigation can decrease the DC below ~75% of its standard cost? |
| psly4mne12-18-05, 10:36 AM | Well, a 25% mitigation limit would effectively remove corrutible and/or anchored mythals and put a serious damper on mitigation in general. A better solution would be a hard cap on rituals - perhaps a max of 8 additional casters or so. As for psionics with augmentation, the emanation should augment up to the user's manifester level for free, in a manner which the manifester specifies when leveling up. |
| redraven12-26-05, 01:00 AM | Alright, I updated the list to reflect the new emanations found in the Spell Compendium. I consider the list to be mostly complete now, although I know there are some sourcebooks not listed that may contain emanations. While I will update the list whenever someone gives me the names of spells from sources not yet referenced, I myself will no longer be looking for new spells. With that said, I suppose we could start listing which emanations we feel are the most powerful/useful/interesting for epic characters (PC or NPC). Keep in mind, however, I am not entirely sure that epic spells can be included. Personally, I find End to Strife to be brutal. Same deal with Greater Consumptive Field, assuming the character is some BBEG with a bunch of goons hanging around - indeed, an entire campaign could be centered around such a BBEG who simply walks through villages, automatically killing commoners and gaining incredible spell power in the process. Greater Cloak of Bravery seems to be at home with some kind of legendary commander character, seeing as how it has a 1-mile radius. Hindsight is perfect for an epic oracle-type character. That's all I can think of off-hand. |
| Karsus the Mad10-16-06, 01:55 PM | can you make epic spells and apply the permanent emanation feat to them?? No. The feat manipulates the duration of the spell, therefore can't be used with Epic spells. Metamagic, Items, and Epic Spells: Metamagic feats and other epic feats that manipulate normal spells cannot be used with epic spells. |
| Sirnightwraith10-17-06, 12:04 PM | Myself, I have discarded AMF as a permanent emanation. Sure , it can be very useful; But it risks the chance of horrible abuse, as well as leeching some of the fun out of a good 'ol fashion brawl. To each their own, however. Can Echo of The Whirlwind, from Kingdom's of Kalamar be used as a Permanent Emanation? ________________________________________ ___________________ "What spider?" Famous last words of an Archmage. |
| Draegun Fury11-06-06, 11:31 AM | Sorry, to res this so late, however: No. The feat manipulates the duration of the spell, therefore can't be used with Epic spells. The Feat doesn't actually manipulate the duration of the Spell. Observe: PERMANENT EMANATION [EPIC] Prerequisites: Spellcraft 25 ranks, ability to cast the spell to be made permanent. Note, that the feat does not make the spell permanent, only its effect. Now, we can break the feat down further, "designate any one of the character's spells", Epic Spells are "any one of the character's spells", "whose area is an emanation from the character", Some Epic Spells Emanate from the character. Really, anyway you look at this (unless there has been Errata) PE does work with ES. Cheers. |
| bluemage5511-06-06, 01:21 PM | Really, anyway you look at this (unless there has been Errata) PE does work with ES. I disagree. Feats do not work with epic spells unless it is explictly stated that they do. Otherwise, you could use metamagic feats, the automatic metamagic feats, and ignore material components with epic spells. I believe this was explicitly addressed by game designers somewhere but I forget exactly where (I'll get back to this when I figure it out). Permanent emanations on epic spells is itself savagely broken. So, no, it does not work. |
| Draegun Fury11-06-06, 01:57 PM | I disagree that feats don't work on Epic Spells unless stated they do, indeed I believe it works the other way. For example, it specifically states that all Metamagic Feats do not work on Epic Spell Casting. However, Exceptional Deflection can surely Deflect an Epic Spell. I think where Feats are concearned they do what they do unless noted otherwise. |
| bluemage5511-06-06, 02:13 PM | Ah yes, thank you for pointing that out, because right next to that in the SRD: Metamagic, Items, and Epic Spells: Metamagic feats and other epic feats that manipulate normal spells cannot be used with epic spells. It specifically states that other epic feats that manipulate normal spells cannot be used. I will readily argue that PE manipulates a normal spell by modifying its effect to become permanent. |
| Draegun Fury11-06-06, 02:56 PM | *Hangs head in shame* I was looking right at that too. Just one last point of clarification. The quoted text reads (Emphasis mine) Originally Posted by SRD Metamagic, Items, and Epic Spells: Metamagic feats and other epic feats that manipulate normal spells cannot be used with epic spells. Permanent Emmanation does not state it effects Normal Spells, rather that it effects any spell that's an emmanation. As it stands I concede you're right, however this last part needs clarifaction I think. Cheers. |

| redraven03-16-07, 08:46 PM | Thank goodness for email notification of replies, as otherwise I would have forgotten all about this thread. Glad to see that it has survived and is still useful to at least a few people. :) In honor of this event, I have updated the first post with all the emanations from the following books: Complete Mage (thanks DeathXI) Complete Psion Complete Scoundrel Draconomicon Player's Handbook II Races of Eberron Races of the Dragon Races of the Wild Hard to imagine that this thread was created 2+ years ago, eh? In any event, if there is a 3.5 book not on the list, that means that no one has looked for emanations within it - I am including books with no emanations for completeness sake. |
| Nezkrul03-20-07, 10:27 AM | Greater Consumptive Field omg, it is the most awesome and horribly broken choice for PE. Just walking around, all day, killing everything around you. Oh, a dead fly. Oh, a dead earthworm. Weeeee! |
