I need a little help. I'm DM'ing a group of Epic Level characters that really don't like dispel or disjunction type spells. They want to go and make a bunch of their items 'intelligent' and thus be immune to dispel or disjunction type effects. Thoughts on this?

Personally I'm not a big fan of having more then one intelligent item per character. I also thought they were kind of rare. So my high level crafters think they can just go make everything intelligent to become immune to dispel or disjunction effects. All comments on this subject welcome. Thanks.

You could rule that intelligent items are do not receive special protection from dispels and disjunctions.

If you don't want to read the text that way, just have them get in personality conflicts with the characters all the time, and be annoying in other ways. Eventually, even high level characters will roll a 1 on their Ego Will save. Also, even without winning an Ego check, if they have speech or telepathy they can still use them, ruining attempts at stealth and potentially attracting dangerous foes.

I agree that having more then one intelligent item on a creature probably causes all sorts of problems. I just don't like the rules that allow the creation of intelligent items so easily. As the epic group has a lot of wealth their readings of the rules seemed to suggest that they would just spend the wealth to imbue their most potent items with intelligence and thus by-pass the Disjunction threat. Other thoughts?

Sounds to me like the kids don't want their toys broken, boo-hoo. This is epic and enemies have stepped up with greater dispel magic and worse as at will spell like abilities it's up to the players to find a way around these problems rather than yours.
My method to deal with disjuction before it starts is a contengency anti-magic field triggered to go off when I am in the area of disjuction. It ends the anti-magic field but keeps all my items safe. Let your players come up with their own methods too.

OK, for dispel and disjunction immunbity, are you using the text where it says "treat them as constructs"? It also says before that "can be treated as creatures" not are in all ways. Dispel and Disjunction should still affect them normally. Only artifacts are affected specially.

No character should have more than one intelligent item. They are all very jealous items. Also, you can make their personalities so annoying that the players wouldn't want so many anyways.

It also says they are rare - I do not think that someone should be able to choose to make one. I don't see off-hand any rule saying you can. Add DM fiat to that stating they are rare and only occur under extreme circumstances. Many times they get created because part of one owner's personality is implanted in them when he dies.... :) Do they really want an intelligent item that bad?
